A couple of times, I’ve worked as a wardrobe assistant for movies, and I have to say that Trent’s wardrobe & props confuse me a little.
I’ve worked in indie films mostly, which means, you have a low budget and you get what you can, and a lot of things are cheap, re-used, or borrowed, and you can’t have a big secret meaning behind every decision because you can’t simply afford it.
So it’s not weird per se seeing an actor—James Lance, in this case—lending his own things to the production, but I think it is weird for this kind of production because
b) it’s a production known for giving meaning to things in the background, and when you establish this, it’s inevitable for people trying to find the hidden connection (That’s us. Hi!)
Now. Let’s go back to “The Curious Case of the Yellow Shirt”
As you said @celsfandomrave, out of the series universe, it’s a weird choice, or even a mistake, making this decision as it stands out so much is hard to ignore it.
On the other hand, it’s also true productions have a general wardrobe, that tends to be used with secondary characters, extras, guests, etc, etc.
For secondary characters and beyond, wardrobe decisions most of the time are made in function of photography. Meaning, you need to make a character pop up or blend in, and the different units decide based on the general vibe of the scene they are seeing on camera.
Evidently, the Yellow Shirt™ makes its appearance here to:
2) being consistent with the line of Trent’s graphics tees
3) still making it part of the color palette of the characters that have their own adventures + the colors of Van Gogh’s sunflowers
In conclusion, probably, this was a practical decision and doesn’t have a major meaning behind it, but still baffles me that S3 Trent Crimm doesn’t have a unique wardrobe in hand with its promotion to a more relevant character.
