Drawing - Observation and Interpretation
In order to draw something, a good place to start is by observing something or someone carefully in order to gain understanding. Things to look for are contours, shapes, shadows, and light. Then use pencils to note and record your observations. It is good to be matter of fact as possible when trying to recreate something or someone via your marks. However, it is also important to put something of yourself and your mind into the work through a bit of style in the marks you use in your representation. Use your style to give your interpretation of the subject you have observed.
Good tools to use for practice and development of your observations and interpretations [drawings] are Graphite Pencils (2H, HB, 2B, and 4B), sketchbooks, erasers, and pencil sharpeners. Though, anything that you can mark with and mark on can work: paper, notebook, dirt, stick… The more you practice, the better you will become. While not necessary, better tools can help with producing better work.

If you're in the Redmond area, join me for Thursday Night Draw, an informal group meeting about drawing that meets the 3RD Thursday night of the month. The group meeting is for every level; beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The meeting’s purpose is to help like minded individuals to learn about drawing, to practice drawing, and to maintain their drawing skills.
The first meeting is on July 16th 2015 at 6:30pm at VALA Eastside at the Redmond Town Center. The topic of the first meeting is “Observation and Interpretation,” and it will be sketchbook focused.
