"Galaxy,"selected for Fiber Fusion
My off-the-canvas painting, "Galaxy," has been selected for the WA Surface Design Association's "Fiber Fusion" traveling art exhibition.
About Galaxy: A Galaxy is a system of millions or billions of stars, with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction. "Galaxy," the painting, is an expanding, contracting representation of the contentedness of the sky.
The work, is part “Off the Canvas,” a mixed-media, texture painting series. It is created free form with gesso, yarn, and acrylic paint. This style of work challenges the concept/definition of “painting.” Due to its nature, a different painting is formed based on the surroundings, the method of display, (hung on the wall, or suspended) and the observer’s point of view.
About Fiber Fusion: Fiber Fusion: A Juried Exhibition of Washington State Surface Design Artists. The traveling exhibition starts in Richland June 2016 then travel to Redmond, Port Townsend and Everett where is ends, April of 2017. Each venue will offer activities and workshops.

2016 KAC Artists’ Exhibition
The Kirkland Arts Center, and judge, Frederick Holmes, have selected my work, "Throughway," to be a part of their 2016 KAC Artists’ Exhibition!
About Throughway: “Throughway” represents the divided passages, which thought quickly travels on, and through.
The work, is part “Off the Canvas,” a mixed-media, texture painting series. The paintings are created free from a canvas, with gesso, yarn, acrylic paint and other material. These paintings challenge the concept/definition of “painting.” Due to its nature, a different painting is formed based on the surroundings, the method of display, (hung on the wall, or suspended) and the observer’s point of view.
About KAC Artists’ Exhibition: The KAC Artists’ Exhibition is an annual show in the Kirkland Arts Center Gallery featuring work from our talented community of artists in a variety of media. The competition was especially fierce this year, with 79 KAC affiliates – students, instructors, staff, volunteers, and donors – submitting 218 works for consideration. The 34 pieces of artwork from 22 local artists selected for this year’s show feature everything from contemporary photography to figurative prints to mixed media constructions, plus much more.
Event Details: Date: April 2 – June 11, 2016 Venue: KAC Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 11 AM-6 PM and Saturday, 11 AM-5 PM
The gallery is free and open to the public.
Positive Space
Off-the-Canvas paintings. These paintings push the boundaries of what's considered a painting. They are created pieces of positive space made to create balance and interest with negative space. Which, makes the negative not so negative anymore.

In the Studio - Work in Progress - Off The Canvas
Canvas-less (off-the-canvas) paintings is a mixed-media, texture series that is a breakaway, an evolution from Path Entanglement. The paintings are created free from a canvas, with gesso, yarn, acrylic paint and other material. These paintings challenge the concept of “painting.” Due to its nature, a Canvas-less painting can evoke a different look or emotion depending on its surroundings, method of display, (hung on the wall, or suspended) and the observer’s point of view.

Drawing - Observation and Interpretation
In order to draw something, a good place to start is by observing something or someone carefully in order to gain understanding. Things to look for are contours, shapes, shadows, and light. Then use pencils to note and record your observations. It is good to be matter of fact as possible when trying to recreate something or someone via your marks. However, it is also important to put something of yourself and your mind into the work through a bit of style in the marks you use in your representation. Use your style to give your interpretation of the subject you have observed.
Good tools to use for practice and development of your observations and interpretations [drawings] are Graphite Pencils (2H, HB, 2B, and 4B), sketchbooks, erasers, and pencil sharpeners. Though, anything that you can mark with and mark on can work: paper, notebook, dirt, stick… The more you practice, the better you will become. While not necessary, better tools can help with producing better work.
The upcoming posts will cover the following exercises:
Learn your Tools 1. Make marks with your pencils, fingers, and erasers 2. Mark types 3. Smudges 4. Drawing with erasers
Find something or someone and observe 1. Find the contours 2. Find the shapes 2. Find the shadows 3. Find the light
If you're in the Redmond area, join me for Thursday Night Draw, an informal group meeting about drawing that meets the 3RD Thursday night of the month.
