In the design of heat exchangers, where maximum research is focused on optimization, most of the efforts are much inclined to improve the heat transfer and effectiveness. In this regard, surface augmentation has been actively researched in recent decades. Usually, this sort of enhancement is dominant on the tube side. It has been seen that the study is greatly conducted in the past experimentally, but numerical studies are limited to determine friction factor or Nusselt number. Only a few discussed an important factor called entropy generation minimization. In this work, the analysis of groove tubes has been performed. The study anchors on the application of optimization techniques on the grooved tube design. After validation with experimental data, different pitch lengths other than the experimental study were examined. Later, the work is based on optimization using the Design of Experiment (DoE). Using this technique, the maximum thermal enhancement factor was determined as a function of the number of starts, the groove-depth, and the helical pitch length. It was found that the tube with a maximum number of starts and the least pitch length and maximum groove-depth gives the best thermal enhancement factor. Finally, the entropy minimization study as a function of Reynolds number was conducted on the optimized tube. The optimum Reynolds number is at the point where the tube has observed minimum generated entropy with respect to the smooth tube. Fig. 1 summarizes the whole concept in one picture.

The recent energy demand and its rapid growth related to the increasing impact of developing countries, clearly indicate the need to consider renewable energy as a source to cater to the energy crises. Among various devices, the horizontal axis and vertical axis are the main tools used to harness tidal energy. VATT has several advantages, but the design and the hydrodynamics simulation and prediction are a bit complex as compared to the horizontal axis. These devices convert the kinetic energy of moving water directly to mechanical shaft power without interrupting the natural process and natural flow as oppose to the barrage system. The main aim during the design process is to evaluate the effectiveness of turbine design. The two options are (I) numerical simulation and (ii) experimental testing. Due to the high cost and time required for experimental testing, enormous efforts are put into developing sophisticated numerical simulation methods. OpenFOAM is a free and Open-source CFD toolbox. OpenFOAM stands for Open source Field Operation and Manipulation. It is used in academia and industry to solve a variety of computational problems. In contrast to any proprietary software, the source code here is accessible and modifiable. This course introduces OpenFOAM. The course is divided into two sections, the first section includes the installation of OpenFoam on Ubuntu and Windows 10. On the other hand, the second section includes an overview of different solvers that are present in OpenFOAM. The first part contains the basis of the OpenFoam, how you can start simulations in Windows 10 without the installation of VirtualBox in Windows 10, you can install Ubuntu in Windows 10 which Windows 10 allows to add another operating system in it. The second section includes Mesh study, Case study, and Postprocessing techniques so that the student will learn more about related domains.

CFD VALIDATION STUDY

Numerical modeling of condensation had been a challenging task for the researchers for many years due to its time scale and rapidity. Present work deals with the characterization of condensation in presence of non-condensable gases on isothermal surfaces which is a common situation in many condensing devices. The investigation includes the effect of different flow parameters on the condensation of the saturated steam-air mixture using a numerical approach. The study uses a wall condensation model through an ANSYS CFX solver. The effect of mass fraction of steam, operating pressure, and mass flow rate of mixture is studied. The investigation provides some key characteristics about film condensation which normally remain absent in condensation without non-condensable gas. The findings of this study will provide valuable insight into the thermal design process of components incorporating this phenomenon.

The course is divided into two parts, the first half covers basic theoretical and physical descriptions of turbulence.
