AMMA // SKY:

Exiting the courthouse, Sky’s usual sunny disposition was absent entirely, his expression sullen as his hand that was resting against his abdomen as he descended down the stone steps unbutton his suit jacket. He loosened his tie, inhaling through his nose as he tried to remember the soothing anecdotes his mom would dole out in times rife with disappointment. 

(More often than not a cliche of sorts, about silver linings and how everything happens for a reason.)

It doesn’t help, his well placed professionalism faltering as his leather dress shoe connected with a trashcan tucked against the side of the steps he had just used, his kick leaving a dent to remember him by. 

“Don’t know what you’re so upset about,” Amma materialized at Sky’s side, her white floral dress skating over her form and steps as silent as they always were. Her tone was pleasent, demure even until the people within earshot move out of the circle she’d created by standing close to him. 

Once it was safe, Amma’s voice took on a different tone. What was it her brother had called her? Cheeky. “I had plenty of fun watching you get me off.”

After the first full month of no communication, Emery did what every theatre obsessed girl did when they were going through a break up. Especially a bad one. Watch The Last Five Years. 

She had run through and memorized every note of Cathy’s agonizing story. Until there wasn’t a single moment where she thought Jamie was the worst. Which he is. And so is Cora. Absolute pees in a pod those two would be. Liars and womanizers always found their way to each other she supposed.

By month two, she has sung See I’m Smiling until her lungs out. And starts every morning with Climbing Uphill. 

Belting the finishing lines into not only her own mirror but the bathroom mirror at the lounge no less than five times in the span of three weeks. Until it becomes a mantra for her to keep carrying on and not attempt to contact her. I will not be the girl who gets asked how it feels to be trotting along at the genius' heels. I will not be the girl who requires a man to get by.

By month three, shit had gotten real. She’d burned through every angry, abandoned song in recent theatre productions crafting Cora into the spot of whoever she needed her to be at the moment. At the end of the shifts when the lounge closed and Tom let her have free reign of the equipment to just let it out to a crowd of whatever staff wanted to listen. 

She was the Hamilton to her Eliza, the Sam to her Donna, the Jeremy to her Michael, the Evan to her literally everyone. It’s then that she realizes that the leading men in all of the musicals of recent memory are absolute garbage. Even Waitress isn’t free from them.  

By month four, she was starting to be okay again. Only to relapse when her social media reminded her of Cora’s existence in the form of a suggested friend. She swore that feature was just to torment the broken hearted. 

Month five came hard and fast, circling back to Eliza. First Burn coming out just in time for Cora to resurface. She couldn’t have known what she was walking into that night. But the second Emery saw her there, after hours and waiting for her. It was the most heated, hate filled performance she’d had in months. You could her the fire behind every word, the accusation and poison behind each note. Until the final warning in the last word. 

“Don’t.” Directed right at her with a scorching stare before she exited the stage, grabbing her bag and making her way out the door without looking back.

He alway did things like this, paid attention to the little details just so he could bring them up later to show he was paying attention. They’d seen the movie together only two weeks ago one night when they were both free and she needed to get her head off things. 

She remembers the night, more specifically? She remembers this part, leaning over and placing an affection kiss on his neck so he wouldn’t have to turn his head away from the screen as this song played in the background. 

Now here he was, guitar in his lap playing that very song like it was second nature to him. She let him strum through the first verse, her hand resting comfortable beside his leg on her bed. Parting her lips and letting the words fall from them with an ease that only came in his presence.

It takes her back to New York and shit left unsaid between people she considered her friends. She considered her family. Bringing the glass of whatever cocktail she threw together with what was left in the fridge, Nik used drinking as a way to delay her response. 

Stepping through the kitchen with the drink still in her mouth like some sort of living kermit meme. She waited until she was in the hallway until she tossed back an absent minded, whatever. And smiled back at Buffy. “Watch the couch though, we’ve got a fourth roommate for a while.”

“I’m washing me and my clothes!!” Ashley quotes, barely managing to hold back a slew of drunken giggles that followed due to the statement alone. Deliberately, he sinks down a little further under the spray of the overhead shower attached to the wall, his hands cupped to catch some of the falling flow so he could splash his roommate. 

(Most of it ended up on his already drenched shirt and not on her, aim.) 

“I’m washing me and my clooooothes,” More singsong this time, he tried to imitate the actions of one of his favourite vines, to instead end up whacking his elbow against the edge of the tub. He didn’t feel the hurt of it instantly but he would the following morning. 

“Get in! Oh fuck, I hope my phone’s waterproven.. Waterproved.. A water pro.”

As her back hit the wall a thought ran through her head, as well as a feeling of deja vu. She wished she could have picked the limited emotions she felt. Cherry picking them in her mind as she stared across from the brother she’d been egging on for the past fifteen minutes. 

She would have kept anger, just for moments like this. Family bonding as dysfunctional as the people inside of it. Anger was the single thing that tied them so closely together, threaded through them like the singular red cord of the blood they shared.

But she would have gotten rid of it’s accelerant. The emotion that radiated through her bones and caused her bite down into people a little harder. Claw at them ‘til they were nothing but bone for her to suck the attention from like marrow. Flesh fell through the fingers thicker than sand but it was a weighter drop. Rejection could make Amma go from lethal to something gods have nightmares about. It infected her like a cancer, spreading over her body and consuming otherwise sensible thoughts. Until she was walking around like a bomb, waiting for the slightest breeze to set her off. 

“What are you gonna do?” She asked of him not yet moving from the spot he’d pushed her into. “Hit me?” The smile on her face was inhuman, something of a dare to enter her space. To speak her language. But that would require staying. “You’re too much of a cunt.”

“No you’ll fuck off, just like you’re daddy before you. So go on, Ben. Let’s see how much you look like him walking out the door.”
