The Paperwork
We all hear about the amount of paperwork SLPs have to do. We hear it all the time. I guess I did not grasp exactly how much paperwork. For instance, I can hear about pregnancy and childbirth, but until my back hurts, my feet are swollen up and I pop a baby out, I won't know the pain that people speak of. Buuuuuuuut just like pregnancy, everyone is different I guess. There's probably a few super humans that feel as though the amount of paperwork is reasonable. (Where dey at doe?!) In grad school, I did SOAPs, progress notes, eval reports... all while being a full time student! Now that I'm on my own, it feels like five times as much paperwork for some reason. I think that feeling is partially due to the fact that I'm no longer a student, and I have a new level of responsibility. If I eff up, it's on me.
Sleep.......
After my first few weeks, I have experienced levels of tiredness I never knew existed. Never felt it in undergrad or grad school! My head hits the pillow every night by about 9 or 10pm. Before I started working as an SLP, I hadn't gone to bed by 9pm since I was in like 6th grade. I feel physically and mentally drained. My eyes hurt and beg for me to close them. Maybe it's just me. Idk.
Contract Company vs District
I had no clue whether or not it was better to work directly for a school district or for a contract company. We all know the major companies. I corresponded with reps from practically all of them. I decided that because I didn’t know which district I wanted to work for that I would work for a contract company. Well, which contract company to choose? They all sound amazing. All of the reps sound like used car salesmen. Maybe draw a name of a company out of a hat? After talking to many of the reps multiple times, I decided one of the major companies wasn’t for me. I didn’t want to get lost in her sauce. I spoke with a rep that didn’t even remember that she had spoken with me before and gave me the same little speech she gave me before. I chose to work for a local company that was not too small and not too large but just right. They reimburse for licensing fees, ASHA and state dues, provide up to $1,000 for CEUs each year, and the list goes on and on.
However, if I don’t work, I don’t get paid.
Caseload Caps
Some states have them. Some states don't. While some SLP somewhere can't have more than 50 kids on her/his caseload or they get paid extra for any kids over the "cap", some of us are over here with 100 kids. Move over Duggars... I have 100 kids and counting. I'm at two schools and have about 100 kids in total. I live in a state that has SLPAs. However, you can't have an SLPA for about three years after having your CCCs. How in the world do I have 100 kids, do all their paperwork, and provide services effectively might you ask? *cricket cricket* I'll get back to you on that one. The contract company I work for is trying to get another SLP. We shall see...
The CF
Who am I? Well, I’m a cf that just graduated in May. I started working in the schools three weeks ago. Annnnd… I’m the person that’s here to tell the good, bad, and ugly about my cf experience without violating HIPAA and whatnot and ending up with my name in the back of the ASHA Leader.
What is a Clinical Fellowship?
The speech-language pathology clinical fellowship (CF) is the transition period between being a student enrolled in a communication sciences and disorders (CSD) program and being an independent provider of speech-language pathology clinical services. FORMER known as the Clinical Fellowship Year but the year has been dropped
