On Measurement -- Activity
Why is measurement important in scientific endeavor?
Experiments are verified using numerically calculated data that are from measurements. These experiments are the core of any scientific theory being proposed.
What does it mean when we say that measurement is âuncertainâ?
There is no absolute or exact reading. Measurement involves devices, and devices have limitations. No such device exists that has infinite calibrations that could give an exact reading.
Why is the zeroth order of approximation convenient?
There are simple approximation problems such as those that involve calculation of large quantities, where little precision is required. This order of approximation is convenient for such cases.
When is it useful to report measurement readings in the first order of approximation?
This order works for experiments that need higher level of precision. In these cases, rough estimation is not advisable. Actual values are now reported, instead of just the exponents of the scientific notation.
Discuss the advantage of using the second order of approximation in reporting data.
In cases where quantities being measured are fluctuating, a range of possible values is needed to give a better description of the quantity. This order of approximation involves reporting the mean value and the range of possible values. By squaring in the values in a graph, one can even assess the validity of his/her experiment.
On Measurement
Diagnostic Exam, thank you for reminding me that I should get my notes back from high school, and that I must familiarize myself with the basic concepts that would surely assist me in this laboratory course. I know how to determine significant digits, how to compute for the mean, median, and mode (the plank, the wave, and the hat â Is that right?!), but sadly, I just canât remember the book definition for those. Accuracy, precisionâI got to read them again. I remembered putting in my math grades, since they weâre asked there. Yes, the Hades-powered grades that I got from the most unforgettable professors of Math building: Canlubo and Agapito. From the deities of math to a never-grade-conscious student, what grade would we expect? Anyway, so much for the semester blues.
With Jesica and Cathee, we form the only all-girl group in this class. Yeah! \m/ *insert danceable music here*. Hopefully, weâll have an equal share of involvement with the group activities. Just no cat fights please. Well, I really doubt if there would be even one.
The activity focused on measurements. The discussion started with the introduction of how and why measurements are done -- popping in the basic ideas needed such as the concern of significant digits, scientific notation, and rounding off. Basic ideas, right? But smart eyes are really in for the job. And this skill of being the âmaster of sig-figsâ has to be polished. How important is it? Well, I guess, a physicistâs language is mathematics. Mathematics provides the excellent and elegant way of presenting ideas, in a sophisticated approach that anyone could grasp. And the numerical information achieved out of mathematical and scientific methods are subject to computation, and further computation; where the basic skill just mentioned is a necessity. And Iâm convincing myself that I should take sig-figs so seriously. Please bear with me. :)
Just what any other normal high school student does in any class where measurement is done (not necessarily a Physics class since measurement isnât limited to it, such as a P. E. class where height, weight, BMI, et cetera are required for anyone to know), I used to âmanipulateâ the measured values. I know itâs a different world out there, and now Iâm making an oath that Iâll never do such a thing in this lab class (and any class), now and forever. I just realized, and itâs been mentioned, that every measuring device has its own limitation; that at some point, the reading has to stop, and thus there is no such thing as an âabsolute readingâ. May limitation na nga yung device, and may natural limitation na din ang human, tapos magmamanipulate pa âko intentionally.. Bad yun.
âNot 2. Not 4.â âNot 3.2. Not 3.4â âNot 3.29. Not 3.31â Being able to know what the values that those statements are referring to, is one proof that the concept behind scientific notation and significant figures to be well-understood. The exercises were a big help; plus the well-presented and well-communicated form of discussion.
Orders of approximation weâre also discussed â something not mentioned back in junior school: the zeroth order which focuses on the âorder of magnitudeâ or simply the exponent of the base 10; the first order which uses significant figures, and mentioned to be known by chemists and biologists; and the second order which has the expected value plus the range of values reported, thus giving the best estimate of the quantity, and mentioned to be applied by physicists.

Blog Fail
I would really want to use blogspot, livejournal, or wordpress for this lab-blog; but I ended up with tumblr. The three cool quotes starred the first page, which were posted few minutes before 9 oâclock. Just to mention, this is a super rush blog. Iâm not proud, though. Pag-aayos na nga lang ng link, cram pa din. Darn. Blame the busy weekendâRun for the Ilog Pasig, and meetings; and resource failureâsudden internet connection loss at dorm. And thanks to CS lib. Yey!
Let's get started.
From being an aspiring physicist of NASA, up to being one-of-the-unusual professionals and staying out of the traditional job opportunities, our class really got reasons for taking up the physics course coming from the extremes. Well, it isnât so much surprising. There really are students who got exceptional IQ destined for the physics work and an equally elevated passion for the subject, just as there are the not-so motivated ones, but still got a slight push on continuing the course.
If considering the interest that I got towards physics, I probably have the right to join the group. Skill-wise, still in question though. Haha. Honestly, this interest is the core reason why I canât shift course, even though my abilities somehow pleaded me ever since to give a shot on the social world. Oh well, matira-matibay âto. Quitters never win.
From LOA, I readmitted at UP just the previous sem. I had dreaded dropping all my enlisted subjects, 2nd semester last year, because I knew one-year punishment delay waits. Reason to shift? Not enough. J
I got demanding GEâs this semester, Eng12 and Theater12. Add them with Physics lecture, Physics lab, Math54 and Geol lab, I canât blame anyone who would question âAnoâng sabaw-sabog-lutang-bangag trip yan?!â But from the bottom of my heart, if ever I got one, I swear to prioritize the major subjects. Wag lang akoâng mabadtrip at maiba ang takbo ng mundo, kung tumatakbo man âyun. Cross-fingers.
