Uncommon POVs to try!
On my Masterlist of Point of View, I mentioned that POV is endless! And on that post, there were some super uncommon POVs that I didn’t mention to the sake of the post-size/accessibility. But, if you want to experiment in a weird POV: you’ve come to the right place to find a good one. Let’s get started!
FIRST PERSON COLLECTIVE - Uses the we pronoun so it’s a group of people telling their shared story - Conflict/experience applies to a whole group of people - Might be good for telling of a traumatic story/social issues ie. sexual assault, natural disaster survivor, etc. since a lot of people
FIRST PERSON WITNESS - Uses the I pronoun so it’s from someone’s perspective - However, the narrator is not the main character but they do tell that person’s story. Sometimes it may read like third-person - Might be good for a story where the main character dies, good for subtly, way to focus on important on side characters
FIRST PERSON OMNISCIENT - Uses the I pronoun of an all-seeing/all knowing narrator - Popular example is Death as a narrator in “The Book Thief” - Might be good for a story where the main character is a deity, ghost, supernatural force, mythical creature, personification of a force of life.
THIRD PERSON PLURAL - Uses the they pronoun to talk about a group of characters who function as one. - Includes shared thoughts, traits, etc. - Might be good for a frame story where the frame is something like a newspaper article or interview sharing the story of a group
FUTURE TENSE - Can be about anyone in first, second, or third, but the narrative has not taken place - Can feel like a dream sequence, be speculative, or a unique reflection/projection - Might be good to show how a character thinks of their future or a good way to show their interest in moving on because of the disgust of their current life.
