It’s been a glorious trip for everyone watching Chance rise from performing at Reggie’s Rock Club to HOB to then hearing him go on tour with Childish Gambino to then seeing him perform the meca of all Chicago venues Lollapalooza.
I smile still just knowing how far we’ve all come in Chicago. I laugh when Chance mentioned to me he used to come to the loft parties in Chicago that I did with my brothers the Midnight Rockers, he was mad young when we had those going. We were all freshmen in college so he must have been mad young in high school kicking it with us in the over crowded lofts we found. Long story short… AND NOW he’s selling out venues!
The performance was an experiment from start to finish. Having seen Chance perform since 10 Day to now it’s always a great surprise to see what he will do next to revamp his songs. The way he sung without a care in the world, to his new gospel inspired track (one he said his grandma had an influence on) that he closed out his set with. Aside from vocals catching Chano footwork is also the best thing to photo ever, I felt like I was witnessing the James Brown of Hip-Hop when it came to his moves, Chano just feels the music and crowd and goes off.
The whole show is so well thought out, the big homie Joe Esquivel did an amazingly entertaining video set for each song. To watching the silhouette of Chance dancing to the wild video he found of girls making out for Chance’s love song to the best tribute video for friendship when Chance sung Everybody’s Something.
Long live Chano, long live Chicago!
S/O to Nico, Peter Cottontale, Mace God, and Greg!
This is a part of two photo sets from Chance’s show from Friday November 29, 2013.
It’s been a great year for Chance the Rapper. The 20-year-old Chicago MC (born Chancellor Bennett) dropped one of the year’s most consistently pleasing hip-hop mixtapes with April’s Acid Rap, a psychedelic, jazzy set that’s sent him on tours with Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

The whole point of Acid Rap was just to ask people a question: does the music business side of this dictate what type of project this is? If it's all original music and it's got this much emotion around it and it connects this way with this many people, is it a mixtape? What's an album these days, anyways? 'Cause I didn't sell it, does that mean it's not an official release? So I might not ever drop a for-sale project. Maybe I'll just make my money touring.
There's no reason to sign to a label. It's a dead industry.
