after some consideration i have decided to retire this blog; im not deleting in hopes that one day i may have enough muse to write all of these wonderful muses again, but as it stands now, i simply dont have the muse

​          ❛  Yes, they say you’re an urban legend. The ‘Forever Student,’ to be exact. They’re excitable little heathens.  ❜

He can see how their imaginations would run wild. She is an awfully strange girl, perhaps even strange enough to give them a run for their money, which is rare. The Oriharas have gotten awfully comfortable in their monopoly of absurdity, so anyone — or anything — that challenges their own bizarre supremacy is awfully stimulating. 

     “ Oh, of course, that. ”

For the first time in their conversation, Naoki’s face falls into something that isn’t a smile -- not exactly a frown, but pretty close. 

     “ Now, I would find this whole thing funny -- and well, I suppose I did at first -- but the swarms of amateur paranormal investigators from the class 1-A following me home from school and the class bullies stealing my lunch money while claiming it to be spirit money has certainly ruined the fun of it. ”

This time around, she really has been met with way more harassment than she has before -- maybe it’s because photography has gotten so good at this point. She fears this may be one of the last years she can truly get away with this.

     “ I didn’t know your sisters got swept up into all that. To think they would fall for that too... ”

How peculiar. 

Everything about her is rather peculiar, though, so it’s fitting that the origins of her name would be, too. 

He laughs.

        ❛  My father picked it. He’s a bit of an eccentric.  ❜

It’s fitting, he supposes. Grand and dramatic. Referencing a biblical, old testament prophet and patching it together with the meaning of “the one who watches over the crowd” — he has to wonder if his father had looked into his newborn face and immediately knew the kind of man he’d grow to be.   ( Had he been so unlovable then, too? ) 

        ❛  It suits me. I wouldn’t say it inspires, though!  ❜

      “ I think it suits you too, ”

A small lull in conversation, and Naoki is making direct eye contact the whole time, like a predator watching her prey -- but a grinning, happy predator. The family resemblance is strong between him and his sisters, the gentle beauty is lucky enough to run in the family. 

Oh, he’s beautiful. Just delightful on the eye! I won’t let him out of my sight!

     “ Now, Iza-kun, was it your sisters that told you about me? Your little apology when you tousled my hair was not exactly… genuine. ”

It would be better if he just took the shackle off. It’s so pointless. There’s no reason for it. If she wanted to leave, she would have to try to walk past them anyway, and — what? Do they think she’s capable of taking on grown men all by herself? The shackle seems to serve no purpose other than proving a point, and she hates the point that it’s proving.

She looks down at the coffee cup for a moment, dejected, then takes a sip.

         ❛  I hate this. I don’t want this thing on at all.  ❜

But that isn’t his call, and it isn’t his fault, and she knows the answer she’ll get. 

He seems to like her, though. At the very least, he’s a fan. He seems to see this for what it is: horrible, dehumanizing. If it were up to him, she probably wouldn’t be in this situation. 

An exhale. Raito probably wants her like this. He wouldn’t stand for it if he didn’t. If this is how he wants her, then…

       ❛  I’m complaining too much, huh? I just don’t like it. But if Raito thinks this is best, it must be. We can see if that cloth thing helps, I guess. Where did you get it?  ❜

     “ I don’t think you are complaining too much. In fact, if I were in your situation, I think I would be far more vocal about how awful it is. ” 

He’s in awe that she has taken this so well, all things considered. She had been through so much under Ryuzaki’s order, and the fact she has been all around patient aside from occasional complaining is impressive… and rather sad.

     “ It was my mothers, she left it at my house one day while visiting and told me just to keep it -- I didn’t have any use for it but it might save your ankle some trouble, ” he extends it to her to feel, “ it’s not a big deal if it gets ruined, what’s more important is your comfort! ”

What little comfort she has left. He sits down beside her, albeit a respectable distance away, watching her facial expression as she studies the fabric, his face uncharacteristically sullen. 

     “ I… I will try to talk to Ryuzaki and Raito about this. There has to be another way, right? Like, perhaps a bracelet that will trip an alarm or something,” he turns his gaze away, a murmur coming from under his breath.

Not that it’s necessary, anyways.

She had been so invested in the movie. The plot and the characters kept her so engaged. Eyes watching the screen with complete fascination pretty much the whole time. It was definitely worth it. Something she had been looking forward to all week. And it was much better than her previous plans to go alone. Glad that Matsuda invited her to go with him.

There’s a small content hum. “Mm, we should do this more often. I had fun.” But really, any time spent with the young detective is enjoyable.

A soft touch to her hand has her glancing down, then over at him. His seemingly embarrassed expression is amusing, a tiny smile gracing her lips. He’s cute… It’s a thought that crosses her mind on more than one occasion. Turning to look ahead, she welcomes his touch, holding onto his hand with no intent of letting go.

     “ We should! I’d like that… ”

Being a detective means being busy and having a hard time making time for anything or anyone else, but being a detective working on a case with L makes his job even more demanding. Where he loves his line of work and can’t imagine doing anything else, sometimes he just wishes to spend an afternoon with someone he cares about…

     “ We should make it a weekly thing! Watching movies or maybe… we can go to that comic store you like so much? Some time in the future, I’d like you to pick one out for me so I can read it! That way we can have a small book club, even if it’s just the two of us. ”

A boyish giggle, followed by a gentle squeeze of her hand; Touta leads her away from the theatre and to a nearby café.

He knew just how much she wanted to see this movie, so when he happened upon free movie tickets, she was ( naturally ) the first person he asked. The movie was great, but he found himself paying less attention to the screen and more attention to her facial expressions while she watched.

     “ Yes, it was! I’m so glad you enjoyed it, I know how much you were looking forward to it! ”

As they walk from the theatre, he reaches a tentative hand out to hold hers, eyes cast downward in a boyish embarrassment.
