Jonah fell in love with the new girl the second she walked into the coffee shop he worked in. She had long hair dyed in a pastel pink color and the prettiest smiles he had ever seen. Of course, Jonah was professional and ignored the pounding of his heart to give her full customer service.
âHi, what can I get for you today?âJonah gave her his usual polite-please-donât-be-mean-to-me-customer smile, good at hiding the complete mess that happened inside his chest.
âOh, Iâm not here for coffee, Iâm the new barista, the boss said I could start today and a⊠Jonah would help me.âShe leaned closer to see the name on Jonahâs tag before smiling. âYouâre Jonah, guess Iâm lucky, you seem like a good guy, Iâm Melissa.â
So much information in less than two minutes of chatting, that meant they would work together? The greek goddess beauty working there with him? Jonah smiled nervously, it was too good to be true, if she ever found herself liking him back, it would be a dream.
âOf course, Iâll help you with anything you need, though itâs much easier than you would think it is. The hardest thing is memorizing the menu, I guess.â Jonah was joking, being friendly so she wouldnât worry, it wasnât the easiest job ever but it was also pretty easy when you got the hang of it.
âDonât worry, Iâll do my best to not give you any trouble, promise you.âMelissa smiled, and that smile was so pretty he wanted to die⊠Not being extremely dramatic, he had a huge crush on her.
Though at first Jonah had thought it would be extremely easy to start a friendship with her and maybe more⊠He didnât count on the fact that he was a shy person, at work, he and Melissa had great chemistry, but ask her on a date or just a night out? Impossible, he just felt like he could never do it.
It didnât help how Melissa would act around him, it wasnât her fault, of course, she would never know he was a cardiophile but it didnât help, it just made her so much more attractive and made him nervous about making the first move.
It all started one day when they were busy, the coffee shop was so full of customers they barely had any time to chat and were just accidentally bumping on each other from time to time. This one time, Jonah was carrying coffee to the machines when Melissa walked backward and didnât see him, her back bumping on his shoulder for a few seconds.
âSorry-â Melissa said, she walked away but turned once while giggling. âWow, your heart is pounding⊠I could feel it against my back, you should chill, not fun to have a heart attack in your 20âsâ
After that happened Jonah decided, even if there was no chance they would be together, he should at least ask for her phone number, so he did, after almost a month of being too nervous to get her contact information, he did it.
Even after getting her phone number, Jonah wasnât sure of how he should approach her, so he just spent a good 30 minutes sitting on the couch and looking at his phone, should he send a âHi :)â? Was the smiling face too much? No smiling face just made it seem so serious though, he truly had no idea.
Jonah didnât need to, though. The second he decided to finally say hi, a phone call from her number came, after seeing Melissaâs name, he stopped for a few seconds, his heart racing inside his chest as he took the call.
âHey⊠I mean hi.â Jonah felt like the most awkward person ever, already cursing himself mentally for possibly ruining it.
âHey, Jonah.â Melissaâs voice sounded quite tired, way different from her usual self. âI know weâre not so close but, I donât have anyone else to call. Iâm feeling sick and I need help, can you please come to check on me?â
It was obvious he would, Jonah thought. Melissa wasnât aware of how much he cared for her, though. So he just nodded, not even thinking about how she wouldnât see it.
âIâll go right away, just text me your address.âJonah tried to not sound so happy, he was going to see her and that was amazing but⊠She was sick, which wasnât so amazing.
âI will, the door is unlocked so just come in âMelissa said before hanging up, her voice sounded so weak, a few hours earlier they were working normally so Jonah couldnât understand how she had gotten sick so fast.
After Mel texted him her address, Jonah rode his bike to her house as fast as he had ever ridden it. Knocking on the door just for politeness sake before going in.
âHey, Melissa⊠Where are you?âHe tried looking for her, she didnât respond, which made him worry even more. After looking for a few minutes, Jonah found her in bed, she looked pale as if⊠No, she couldnât be dead. He panicked for a second before walking up closer, one hand on her neck pulse, but it felt so, so weak. âGosh, your pulse is so weakâŠâ
Melissa woke up startled, her pulse weak under his hand got even faster, it was fast but not strong, clearly a problem, she took a few seconds to realize who he was.
âDonât worry, I was just checking your pulse.âJonah sat on her bed before looking at her, Melissa sat down, her breathing was shallow, her cheeks red from the scare. âSorry, what happened?â
âIâm just not feeling good, it happens from time to timeâŠâMelissa said, before going silent for a couple of minutes, Jonah was not sure what he should ask, the girl placed one of her hands over her heart. âI canât get my heart to calm down, you startled meâŠâ
Jonah felt guilty, the girl was already feeling weak and he just made it worse? He had no idea what exactly was wrong but, still, it just wasnât a nice thing to do.
âIâm sorry, this just wasnât- Wow, waitâ Jonah was startled by Melâs sudden next movement, she was taking her shirt off, but doing anything when she was so sick just wasnât a great idea. âI donât know if we should do thisâŠâ
âYou donât think Iâm hitting on you while so sick, do you?âMelissa laughed before removing her shirt, showing him her chest, Jonah could see a scar that was clearly from open-heart surgery, well it was clear to a cardiophile, at least. âThis⊠This is why sometimes I feel this sick.â
âSomething wrong with your heart?âJonah had no idea how to talk about that like a normal person who didnât have a special love for hearts.
âYes, my heart is weaker than normal, I donât know exactly the technical terms, try not to think about it but sometimes it just beats so, so fast, itâs hard to breathe, and⊠Thereâs something wrong with the size, too. I went into cardiac arrest after a dance competition and needed surgery it didnât fix everythingâEven saying that entire sentence left her breathless for a few seconds, she finally recovered after some time. âThereâs a stethoscope on my second drawer, you can listen if you want.â
Jonah blushed, his own heart was racing inside his chest, a girl was asking for him to listen to her heart? It was⊠A dream, though he was trying to remind himself this wasnât a good thing, she was sick.
He wanted to hear her heart so badlyâŠ
âOnly if you want to, of course.â Melissa reminded him, giving Jonah her usual, adorable smile.
âOf course, yes⊠I would love to listen to your heartbeat, well, itâs part of you, and I think everything about you is awesome, soâŠâ Jonahâs face was only getting more red with every word, Melissa giggled as he looked for the stethoscope on the second drawer, finding it and holding it for a couple of seconds, it was great quality, Melissa couldnât help but notice he seemed to understand about that.
âYou know about stethoscopes?âThat question caught him by surprise, Jonah tried as hard as he could to explain himself, internally panicking.
âKind of- I mean, I collect old medical equipment, yes, thatâs itâŠâ Jonah knew that was the worst explanation ever, Melissa seemed too weak to care, though, just leaning closer so he could listen, her breasts looked so perfect in that bra he couldnât help but blush even more, his heart a thundering mess.
The boy was nervous, he had never done that to a real person before, watching videos online was different than actually doing it. He placed the earpieces on before placing the end on her chest, didnât take long until her heartbeat filled his ears, it was beating extremely fast but, weak, definitely not a healthy heart, a loud murmur was also easy to spot even for him, a non-medical worker, it sounded so sick yet fascinating, both from a cardiophile point of view and because he cared for her so, so much. The beats were weak yet gently pushing the end of the stethoscope.
âWhat does my heart sound like?â Melissa smiled, her soft voice vibrating inside her body as she spoke, Jonah just smiled back at her.
âIt sounds⊠I donât want to say beautiful because I know itâs causing you pain, but itâs part of you. I think I like everything about you.âHe noticed Melissaâs heart rate speeding up a little, her face blushing now from being flustered.
âWell, you can listen to it whenever you likeâŠâThe beats were only getting faster, even a little stronger. âI want you to be one of the reasons why it beats.â
Jonah knew what she meant by that, his smile even wider, so he wanted her and she wanted him? A beautiful and amazing girl like that into him?
The only response Jonah could give to that was lean even closer, placing his lips against her in a gentle kiss, Melissaâs hand reached for his chest, feeling the beats so strong and fast they were gently punching her hand.
They stayed just like that for a few minutes, both hearts racing, together. Jonah finally pulled away before smiling at her, though the stethoscope was still in place, listening to the beats that didnât seem like they could calm down soon, this time it wasnât for any bad reason.
âOnly condition I have though is that sometimes you gotta let me listen to your heartbeat as wellâŠâ Melissa laughed, the prettiest sound he had ever heard, combining with her heart⊠Jonah was in heaven.
And he didnât want to leave.
