Sometimes the universe puts a person in the wrong place so they can find the right one - at least that’s what you tell yourself as you catch sight of the worn old bear resting against the typewriter your uncle had given you for your eighteenth birthday. Sometimes the universe leaves behind just a little too much stardust when it creates a new life, leaving you with a heart and a temper that burn just a little too bright. Sometimes the universe forgets that people aren’t meant to know what’s to come before it happens, and gives you a gift that leaves behind so many dreams they can’t just come when you’re asleep - but the black cat sleeping in the sun flitting through the open window of your tiny flat doesn’t seem to mind when you fade for a moment or two, and neither do your friends as far as you can tell. Sometimes the universe gives you a bit more of a fighting spirit than you need, sends you into the world with the willingness to do whatever it takes - as if it knows something is coming, even when you don’t.

His mind had been elsewhere. Through many moments of his life, when too many things were happening or his thoughts were buzzing, he would switch off and stare blankly at a space in front of him without blinking. Even in a room of crowded people, he would force himself to zone out and rather be called unfocused than allow himself to explode without warning. It didn’t always work; (actually it rarely worked) but he congratulated himself on the fact that he at least made an attempt.

“You said something? I wasn’t listening” he admitted, glancing back at her with an oddly sheepish look on his face. Charlie had bee a good friend to him, someone he had found by his side at school, friendly and unjudgmental. It had been exactly what he needed at times, especially given… events. “If you repeat it, I swear to listen this time”.

Charlie knew well enough to spot when Niko was attempting to drift into his head, but it had never been enough to stop them from just rambling on – largely because it kept others from wandering over to attempt to strike up conversation. So as they wandered back over to him with their fourth cup of coffee, they continued to explain the entire plot of some book they had read the week before, but couldn’t recall the name of. It was mindless chatter, noise to fill the space.

“Oh, I don’t think I’ve said anything of substance for... at least ten minutes. Maybe longer. Probably longer, honestly.” She settled into a seat next to him, humming softly and offering a slight shrug. “Was there something bothering you, or has it just been one of those sorts of days?”

“Are you upset with me?” “No,” the thought hadn’t even crossed Charlie’s mind, but they had been uncharacteristically quiet for the last... several minutes, and it wasn’t much of a stretch to see why Monty had asked. “Should I be? I don’t recall you doing anything I should be upset over.”

Most people had more sense, or more tact, maybe even more consistent manners – but most people were not Llewellyn. Most people, after knocking, would not try a door, and were that door unlocked, enter, but again, most people were not Llewellyn, and to Llewellyn, it stood to reason that if Charlie hadn’t wanted visitors, they’d have locked their door. At least Llewellyn didn’t wander too far – only to the kitchen. “Charlie? Are you here? I’ve brought breakfast waffles, are you hungry?”

Charlie had known full well that the charm they’d placed on their doorknob was all but an invitation – a door that unlocked itself for a friendly hand was wonderful for a person that hated carrying keys or getting up when their landlord dropped by with the new gelatin recipe his wife had heard about from her sister in the states, but it also came with the chance of company. Luckily the only one of their friends who both knew where they lived and would just waltz in without a second thought was Llewellyn. So they weren’t surprised when the closing of the door was followed by the familiar voice, even before they’d walked into the kitchen to find him. “For breakfast waffles? Of course I’m hungry. Do you want coffee or juice? I think I have tea too, somewhere.”

“It looks nice, at least, yeah, I guess I’d agree. Keeping up appearances,” he repeated, shrugging before reaching for a grape – for quality testing purposes, of course – then speaking around it, “It makes people feel like they still have a say, if nothing else.” But the grape was not as tasty as it could have been, and Abe (despite himself) eyed the blackberries when Charlie mentioned them. They did look better. “Got it, so you get me when I’m too distracted to answer you carefully,” he teased, grinning as he reached for the blackberries as suggested. “Honestly, as long as it isn’t Albus, I don’t really care who or how they pick. But what would you prefer? Since it’s your question, after all.”

”And with everything else going on, letting people think they’ve got some control over the matter keeps them a bit more calm.” Not that the illusion of control could change the course things seemed to be set on, but at least it brought people comfort. They couldn’t help but grin a little at his face as they could only assume the grape failed to meet expectations, shrugging slightly at the observation. “It’s the best way to get answers. I honestly don’t know that I care enough about it all to have an opinion – though if Albus ever did end up in office I think I’d have to head back to the states. I’m sure there’s some office I could transfer into.”

“It is, and most likely wouldn’t argue too much on that. But many seem to be of the belief that the dead deserve more respect than the living – my questions about what comes next in terms of her position could easily bother those that are more sensitive.” They’d run into that problem more often than they cared to admit – asking questions that offended the living when they doubted the dead would be terribly concerned. A gentle hum left them as they listened to him, nodding along. “Without someone to sign the right forms as we go along until a proper election can happen, we’d wind up at a standstill that would only further complicate things for whoever comes next. I did know the muggles tend to prepare ahead for such things, though I can’t say I know much about the specifics. They’re nothing if not over-prepared – or perhaps we’re simply so dreadfully under-prepared that it seems that way.”

Evander knew that the Minister’s passing would be the talk of the town. Knew that people would be left with more and more questions the more things got drawn out. Yet he couldn’t find it in him to necessarily care about any of it. Had he been partially to blame? Sure. But as long as it served to better the purpose, Evander couldn’t give less of a rat’s ass. “Chain of command, I assume,” he answered, not really knowing the answer himself, “I can appoint you to the right person if you would like.”

”Oh. That’s a kind offer, but... definitely not. It was more an idle curiosity than an actual need for information.” Charlie could think of countless things right off that they’d rather do than sit through an explanation of anything terribly political even given current events – there were few people that could explain it in a way they’d process it, and they didn’t feel much like gambling. “It just seems to me most people were more interested in gossiping over ‘who did it’ than understanding what comes next.”

“A pity, everyone deserves a break over the holidays.” Ziya remarked, eyes sweeping over Charlie, immediately assessing them more out of instinct and muscle memory than any sense of concern or suspicion. He had no reason to be wary of the unspeakable, except perhaps for the sheer amount of intelligence Charlie no doubt possessed. It was admirable, not something to cower at. “That’s alright anyway, I’m glad to talk about anything else.” He mused, sick to death already of people speaking on Minister Tuft. He didn’t feel bad about it.

His eyes creased at the edges as he laughed, pleased to know he wasn’t the only one aware of Miss Cherry, Merlin bless her. “See, I warned you it’s unlikely I know anything you don’t,” he quipped, turning toward the door as the woman in question came scurrying in. He sipped his drink, amused. Some people were so habitual it was downright unbelievable. “I can’t say I have anything that would interest you, Cahill.” He shrugged, “Unless you’d like to hear of my most recent arrest story, but I warn you, it’s rather crass.” He smirked.

“Yes well, the extra pay they give me when I do work holidays is definitely worth the lack of time off for parties I likely wouldn’t attend anyways.” Not to mention it seemed to give them a bit more ground to stand on when asking for other days, which they found preferable. Not that they’d feel the same in Ziya’s line of work, or even if they’d stayed on course as an Obliviator – some fields were more the sort they imagined it was nicer to have holidays away.

His seeming amusement was something nearly contagious, and even if it hadn’t been the sheer timing of the woman’s entrance and her husband’s quick escape would’ve been enough to pull the laugh from their lips. They shook their head as they lifted the glass to their lips, raising an eyebrow. “Do I come across as the sort of person that would terribly bothered by crassness? If so I suppose I need to work on that. I’m most interested, Padgett, in whatever story you could possible have – provided it’s entertaining.”

“Peace is always a bit precarious at best, but an election would be a good move if they want to keep up appearances.” Charlie hummed slightly as they nodded, it did make the most sense given the current state of things. “Oh, that’s easy – you’re more likely to answer me without thinking too much over what I’m asking. It’s also easiest to be sure I won’t need to compete with your customers or animals for your attention. You should get the blackberries.”

He hadn’t really thought of elected officials as the sort of people that could just die like that. “But I’ve not even the foggiest idea of what it might be. Does she– did she– have some sort of Junior Minister? Minister in the Wings or something? If actors get understudies surely someone like the Minister would have a back-up.”

“You’ve... nevermind.” They’d nearly gestured to their chin, but they didn’t trust Monty not to just smear the ink even further – or simply do it again at some point over the course of their conversation. Easier to simply let him be and suggest he clean up later. “I’d like to hope so – it’s always helpful to have a backup in positions where so much relies on one person. I hardly trust any governing body to be terribly wise, though Tuft seemed rational enough to have some contingency plans set up.”

Politics was safe, politics was enough to keep Reuben straight and answering questions regarding it was something he was vastly trained in. He cracked his neck, running a hand across his eyes as he ‘hmmed’. “Insensitive wouldn’t be the word I’d use- proactive, maybe? And certainly not foolish.” he replied, tone rather warmer than usual. “There are always plans in place for situations like this, the first step would be placing an interim into the position however temporary and then when the storm has passed, it goes to the pool of candidates within the Ministry. If anyone suggests Dumbledore again though, I’ll resign straight then and there.” they didn’t need a self glorified hedonist leading the fold. No matter what his supporters spewed.

”I can think of a few who’d disagree. People tend to be a bit... delicate when it comes to the matter of death, even when in regards to a politician most of them likely hadn’t met.” Charlie had never been particularly keen on politics, hence why they had no real idea on what happened in cases like this, but they did have to admit the man seemed to make it easier to understand than her professors ever had. “So they’ll have a stand-in for a bit? Not sure who from that pool I’d trust to fill her shoes. I am half convinced that whoever keeps putting Albus Dumbledore forward for anything is doing so out of some sort of joke, though. Surely.”

He had, of course, but not beyond repair, though he carried them with such reckless abandon – still in fistfuls, directly in front of his face so he couldn’t see where he was going – and moved back through the office on blind faith he wouldn’t injure himself. “You’re absolutely right. No one will take anything seriously, from me, or from the Prophet, if I bin this. It’s a week’s worth of news, and everything coming up. And .. Well, truthfully, I was running out of ways to stop myself starting several different investigative articles, anyways, and I’m fours hours to print, so …. Honestly, where were you two hours ago? A special edition I can take some extra time with, you’re .. a genius, Merlin, I hope they pay you like it. At this point, I probably should.”

“Charming my way out of working today.” It’s an idle statement, one they don’t imagine Llew picked up on as they watched the metaphorical gears spinning away in his head. They don’t bother making any move to follow, instead finding themself a place to perch out of the way enough to not be too much of a nuisance. “Four hours is plenty of time to do a quick check and get that all sent off. And with an extra set of hands and eyes, you may even have time to spare to jot a quick hint that you’ll be releasing a special edition soon. And like I said, I had to talk my way out of working today – for as wonderfully as they do pay me, I’d’ve lost my mind if I’d gone in after staying late last night. Please though, a decent cup of coffee now and again is plenty payment – you know I only write for my own enjoyment.”
