did any of your synesthesia colour associations for the songs on idle worship change when you remastered the album with teto?

Hm, I wouldn't say any of the songs changed colors. If I added anything to the songs, it was in alignment with the colors I already heard for the it.

Although, I will say that it drives me crazy that the new branding for the album leans more pink because it is a deep blue album to me. It kinda had to be pink since Teto is such a pink character. I worked with PinkA to try out alternate covers where everything was blue-toned (you can see some of those versions in the video canvas on Spotify), but I ended up scraping those since it would no longer look like Teto. Alas, it is what it is.

I think the closest you'll get to that is the acapella version I put on SoundCloud. I'm glad you're excited about the new music! The current plan is to released the album next. I've got 1 song done and 8 songs almost done, so hopefully I'll be sharing more info about that soon

Did you tune Solaria screaming in LIVE FOOTAGE? When she's singing "I fucking loved her, then she stopped talking to me"? If so, how?

Ah, no the screaming bit is not Solaria. That is my vocals. I actually sneak my vocals into Solaria songs a lot because we sound similar enough. I heard there used to be a setting for Solaria to do screamo, but I think they removed it.

Whats the audio in the background of victim, complex?

It’s from an old Russian novel called The Brothers Karamazov. The passage is at the beginning of the novel, and it’s meant to be kind of ironic. Like the author is making fun of this woman who “invented a bunch of problems for herself” and then killed herself just for the aesthetic. But that’s the exact tragedy that “victim, complex” is about. Carrie, the girl singing the song, acknowledges that she’s created these problems herself because of how deeply mentally ill she is. She feels like a victim of her own damaged mind. And yes, she romanticizes the idea of suicide, but the woman in the book that the author is describing really did kill herself. It shouldn’t matter what circumstances lead her to taking her life. Anyone who takes their own life is a victim. So the audios are played mockingly

Technically yes, but it’s not a huge plot point. You can fully enjoy the storyline of the EP without it.

can we get the instrumental version of color theories please?

Unfortunately, this is one of the files that got messed up. I didn’t save the original version with Eleanor and went straight in to redo it with Teto. Once I exported the version I posted, I went into the file again to mess with the tempo and I guess that glitched out the program and the messed up version saved over the original file. Yeah, I’m not really good with technology and I have a really old MacBook. I learned my lesson with the other idle worship tracks but the instrumental may be lost forever. My bad

ever considered releasing official stems for your stuff?

I could if anyone was interested. It would depend on the song though because some of the files are all messed up. Like the OG Glitter file got corrupted but I had an older version of the track without vocals that I had to put into a new file. But then that file got lost so I had to create a new file and worked on that until I found the other one. So yeah, it’s all a mess. Not to mention all the tracks that are sped up or slowed. But I could do it for some of the songs.

i was meaning to ask this during the stream but -- how do you do the sound design in your songs? i am a big fan of all the electronic and synth instruments so how do you get sound choice? do you sound design them yourself? is it default garageband stuff if you still use garageband? is it a vst? also, i dm'd you something i wanted to show you thank you for the stream btw, had fun!

I do still use GarageBand. Most of the instruments I use are just the instruments in the program that I’ve played around with until they sound right. I like using GarageBand because it’s easy to pick up and it has a lot of hidden tools most beginners are unaware of. But you can use those tools to get really cool synths to mess around with.

I don’t have a lot of formal musical training, so I wouldn’t be able to explain much of my process using technical terms. I mostly play it by ear (dont mind the pun). I go into the production process with a vibe in mind and try to find synths and other instruments that match the vibe. And then I listen to the base track over and over again in my car or in my earbuds or headphones and keep messing with elements over the course of weeks or months until I’m happy with it.

does idle worship have a storyline like a well manicured lawn does?

Yes, it does!

Idle Worship tells the story of the Crook and the Songbird, from the perspective of their caretaker. I call the caretaker "Carrie."

The backstory is explained in the first song. The was once a Crook who turned away from his life of crime after saving a magical Songbird who could heal the sick with her voice. They lived happily together for years. Carrie's mom is a close friend of theirs, which is how Carrie know them. But she's mostly heard about how great they were from other people.

Carrie is an aimless girl in her early twenties, searching for a sense of purpose through her relationship to other people. She's been struggling since the end of her toxic friendship when her friend cut off contact and moved to Paris. Now, she lives with her mom and younger sister, not really sure what to do with her life. She's a smoker, struggles with an eating disorder, and keeps a lot of aspects of a life a secret from her overbearing mother.

Then, the Crook is diagnosed with lung cancer and given two months to live. The Songbird should be able to easily heal him. But the trauma of once again being put in a position where she is forced to sing makes her fall silent. She can only bring herself to sing occasionally, extending the Crook's life bit by bit.

As the Crook's health worsens, he needs to hire a caretaker. Carrie steps up to the challenge. She thinks that perhaps this is the role that will fulfill her. The album follows her mental decline as the Crook's health declines. In the end, Carrie attempts to take her own life by drowning herself at the lake that she visits to smoke in peace. Fortunately, the attempt is unsuccessful. But that same night, the Crook finally dies.

Months later, Carrie still feels rather hollow. She worries that her only defining characteristic is her desire to be miserable. The Songbird never sings again. It's a rather depressing ending. But that's the story!
