“Such is the life of a university professor, something I know quite well, so I won’t hold that against you.” It’d be extremely hypocritical if he did considering there had been plenty of times where Zach had been the negligent one due to obligations to the university, but being able to actually understand and relate to each other’s jobs is probably one of the reasons they worked so well as a couple. As Laurence pulled him closer Zach reached out to wrap an arm around the other’s waist just to pull him closer as well, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to the man’s cheek before pulling back with a soft, content sigh. “Nah, you’ve clearly had this on your mind for a while so I’m all ears. You have my full attention, I promise.” Sudden as the idea of them having children was, the theory professor found himself breathing easier just by being closer to his boyfriend. Zachariah might not be able to handle a child on his own, but if anyone would be a good father he was sure it would be Laurence and he loved the man dearly - there was just no way he’d pass on being parents if it meant doing it with the other professor.
“Oy, don’t ruin the moment with that cheeky attitude,” Zach rolled his eyes at the implication, but was unashamedly incapable of keeping a chuckle out of his tone. “We’d make quite the hot pair of vatis though, wouldn’t we? I bet you anything they’d end up liking you more, though. Somehow I get the feeling they’d end up seeing me as the strict one, so they’d always go running to you when they wanted something fun.”
Laurence had learned over their time together that he was not one to take a serious topic as seriously as he should. When it came to topics he could shift to a lighter air, he always did. A hum echoed from the back of his throat when Zach continued the lightheartedness of the concept of sharing a kid together. He rested his hands on the professor’s hips, fingers looped into the belt loops of his jeans. “Oh, you would definitely be the strict one.” Laurence’s comment came with a chuckle. “English professors always have more fun... you know it.” As if to prove his point, he tugged Zach’s hips against his and nipped a kiss along the other’s jawline. A mischevious grin spread on his lips as he returned his gaze to the professor’s eyes, only for it to soften a little.
“Any kid would love to have you as a parent, love,” he whispered. Laurence moved a hand to rest against Zachariah’s cheek, thumb rubbing gently. “We can talk about this later after you’ve had time to think about it. It was just a thought I wanted to bring up.” Laurence pressed his lips gingerly to the other’s forehead and gave a smile.

It took the composer a few seconds before realization eventually dawned on him - he’d met this young woman a handful of times prior as a result of run-ins down in the mail room, but shame and embarrassment quickly washed over him as he also realized that he’d never properly introduced himself before. Being the hermit that he was that was always a possibility; meeting people and never reacting in a normal way, much preferring to brush them off as quickly as possible so as to get back to the musical world in his head, but now it was even worse with someone confronting him - albeit rather politely - about his racket and he didn’t even know her name. God, Roland’s mother would be so disappointed in him if she could see her awkward mess of a son now.
“Well, I do hope you’re not just saying that for my benefit, miss,” the man replied, only for his awkward smile to turn into a grimace as his puppy continued to bark. “My apologies for the music and now this little munchkin,” the composer went on as he bent down to pick the Corgi up in the hopes that might calm it down some. “The name’s Roland, by the way, and this hyper little pup is Chopin, who seems hellbent on saying hello now. Seems I still need to work on teaching him some manners, so I’m sorry if he ever starts bothering you too.” And finally a proper, warm smile graced Roland’s lips as he ruffled Chopin’s head with his free hand, his typical stoic demeanor melting away in mere moments just from looking at the puppy.
“Hm? Oh, right, the ruckus you came to confront me about.” For a handful of seconds his pet had distracted him so completely that he’d actually forgotten what he’d been doing before his neighbor had come over, but a quick glance over his shoulder to see where she indicated brought his work right back to the front of his mind. “I was trying to work on some music for a project that was commissioned to me - I’m a composer, you see, and I do a lot of the music for the smaller indie projects that can’t afford the price tag that comes with someone like, say, John Williams for instance. The problem is I’ve just had the worst time coming up with anything the last few days, as you well know now.” Roland returned his attention to the young woman before him again, an apologetic smile lining his lips once more as he just couldn’t stop feeling a little awful as he was sure he’d disrupted her night. “Are you sure I didn’t mess up your evening? Is there anything I can do to make it up to you at least regardless?”
Perhaps instinct drove her in a wrong direction, but Eliot’s lips curled into a smile when the corgi was pulled into the arms of her neighbor. Roland, he had said. “Well, Roland. It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name’s Eliot,” she managed to say before the topic shifted. Her hand extended gingerly to Chopin while Roland explained the ruckus from earlier, resisting a laugh when he had begun to lick her hand. Eliot could not withhold the amusement at his seriousness and attempt at an apology for what she had heard - though it had not disturbed her in the slightest - while his puppy seemed far more focused on making a new friend amidst the conversation. Just as she had seen Roland’s demeanor shift dramatically with the puppy in hand, she knew hers had certainly shifted away from one of concern.
She drew her hand away when his attention returned to her with a sheepish grin. “I can tell you with certainty that you did not mess up anything,” she said. Eliot gave a reassuring smile with a shrug. The next thing out of her mouth had been unexpected even to her and maybe it was the puppy’s energy rubbing off on her, but she couldn’t hold it back once it began. “Well... if you really want to make it up, how about allowing me to hear some of this music?” A blush crept on her cheeks at the suddenness of the request, though her shouldered rolled back and she cocked her head to the side. Eliot had just planned to stay in for the night to relax; this seemed far more worthy of her time.

It all happened in a flash. The knife that found its place in the neck of the man that had fallen to their feet was still in her shaking hand. She was balled in the car’s passenger seat, eyes fixated on the object she held close to her. The talking the other person did was just muted noise as she tried to shake herself from her own mind. Leigh was convinced that this would be the end of it all. What was supposed to be just an innocent escape from her life had turned into a murder trailing behind her, albeit one she had done in self-defense. The beginning bruise on her wrist from the harsh hold the man had on her caught her attention. She fucking killed someone.
“What are we going to do?” she asked, interrupting the other’s train of thought. Brown eyes darted to them and the true worry she had saturated her expression. “I just... We need to escape.”

Composing was a terribly elusive talent to have - some days he could write enough pieces to fill an entire book, while others he’d be lucky if he could come up with even just a single measure. Roland’s true desire was to write pieces of the classical nature, but as those weren’t exactly in high demand at the moment he’d settled for any small, independent video games or films that came his way. He’d had a moderate amount of success with such endeavors, but more often than not he tended to struggle at the start if a director of such a project hadn’t given him…. well, much direction to go off of. And so here he was, a couple of weeks in to his newest job and growing increasingly frustrated with himself at his lack of progress - enough so that he’d played nonsensical tunes on his piano (that honestly took up the majority of his living room), trumpet and guitar in an effort to get rid of the writer’s block, but evidently the man had been going about it too loudly when his dog’s barking alerted him to a stranger at the door.
“Hush now, Chopin, you’ll piss ‘em off even more,” Roland gently scolded the Corgi as he reached the door, gently taking hold of his collar with one hand while the other reached out to unlock and open the door. “Ah, hello there, miss,” he began, calmly hushing the canine once more before giving the young woman an awkward, apologetic smile. “Yes, yes, everything’s fine - for the most part anyway. Just having a bit of trouble coming up with ideas for my work, but clearly I was going about it too loudly. Apologies for any disturbance my obnoxious behavior might have caused, miss. I didn’t ruin your evening plans with my nonsense, did I?”
The moment the door opened, a glance at the pup behind drew a broader smile on her face before she caught the face of the person. One of the other tenants whom she had met grabbing mail one day was the one behind the ruckus of the apartment. Eliot chuckled a bit as he gave an explanation while the canine behind him appeared to be particularly excited. “No, no. No plans were ruined,” she reassured him. It was rare for her to have anybody over as she had been partial to going out far more than staying in. “I was just getting back for the day and heard the ruckus and I just wanted to check to make sure that everything was okay.”
A glance behind the man whose name was lost to her at the moment exposed the few instruments that caused the noise. A piano, guitar... Her eyes fell back to the neighbor with a quirked brow. “What were you working on? If you don’t mind me asking, of course.” Curiosity filled her at the exposure of the few instruments. What was he working on that required the few instruments she spotted just from where she stood.

It had been a long day with the animals at work but Eliot had loved every day at the work. It was a struggle day in and day out to not adopt one of the furry ones that came into the Humane Society -- except she had actually caved today and brought a kitten home. Unfortunately, was not long after she returned to her apartment that she had to abandon the little one in her apartment to confront the noise of her neighbor. The short brunette placed the kitten gingerly inside her apartment with a gentle promise she wouldn’t take too much time away before she sighed. The jumble of noise from one of her neighbors was simultaneously concerning and a tad annoying. After her knuckles rapped on the door, Eliot hummed to herself while waiting for the door to open. A smile found her face when it creaked open and she looked up at the man that answered. “Hey! I just heard a lot of noise coming from your apartment.. is everything okay in there?

“I wouldn’t say we’re bland,” Zach replied, absentmindedly drying the last of the dishes as Laurence moved closer, “more like… we’re free spirits who can do as little or as much as we want since we only have each other to keep in mind.” It wasn’t that the man was against having children of his own, it just wasn’t something he’d ever thought about before and as a result he’d been thrown completely off guard by his boyfriend bringing it up out of the blue. Hell, Zachariah wasn’t sure he would even be able to handle a child at all, but if it was actually something Laurence wanted then he knew he at least owed it to the other man to hear him out. “Is that something you’ve always want? Having a kid of your own running around, I mean?” A soft sigh left him as he finished the last of his little chore and quickly dried his hands before turning to face his boyfriend again, a small smile lining his lips as he did his best to hide how he was slowly starting to worry on the inside. “Because if this is something you actually want, and not a result of me not, say, paying you enough attention, then I… I’m willing to have a discussion about it, but only because it’s you.”
“You’re paying me plenty of attention,” Laurence reassured him, “and if anything I’m the one that has been paying you less attention with the increase of essays to grade.” The idea of having a child running around crossed his mind as Zachariah spoke and he let his body’s tension go. How could he have just sprung this on the other man? It was not something they had ever talked about before, so why now? “We don’t have to talk about it. Pas de problème.” In the back of Laurence’s mind, he knew it was not the appropriate response to just dismiss it entirely. It was an impulsive moment for him to share the idea. His arms reached out to tug Zach close with a small smile. “I just... wanted to share the idea. Obviously now is not good for us.” A hand raised to brush a thumb against the male’s cheek and he shrugged. “But I do want one eventually. I think it’d be great for us. Besides...” His smile turned mischievous as he cocked his head to the side. “You’d be one hot babbo.”
