What if There’s No Forever?|| One Shot
Brianne was still in a coma. Chase wasn’t sure what to do anymore. After a few nights in the hospital, Amelia was being discharged into Chase’s care. With a heavy heart, he took the little girl home. He’d left the hospital only long enough to pick up the baby stuff Brianne had gotten at her baby shower just two months ago. Luckily, they’d been on top of getting the nursery ready for the little girl’s arrival. He took Amelia in to visit her mother, though he couldn’t bear to stay long just now-- the steady beeping of the monitors, the tube down Brianne’s throat, breathing for her-- it was too much for him to handle. Still, he talked to the unconscious woman for a little bit.
“I named her Amelia Rose, just like we talked about. Seven pounds even, and she’s perfectly healthy. I’m taking her home today-- I wish you were coming with us.” He picked up Brianne’s hand and placed it gently on top of Amelia’s, so that she could feel her daughter’s touch. Maybe it would wake her up. With no luck, Chase stood and kissed his wife’s forehead. “I’ll come visit tomorrow.” He promised, as if Brianne could hear him.
Taking care of a baby alone was hard. It’d been about three weeks, and Brianne was still in her coma. Still, Chase visited everyday to talk to her and update her on Amy’s achievements. She’d slept through the night once. She was already using bottles, due to Brianne’s lack of being able to provide breast milk.
“Amy’s been grabbing my finger and holding on. She doesn’t like letting go, isn’t that right my little angel?” He sat beside Brianne’s bed, cradling Amy gently, the little girl just waving her arms around, her eyes wide.
A nurse entered the room to check Brianne’s vital signs, and then cleared her throat. Chase looked at the woman, preparing for whatever news he was about to get.
“You may want to start preparing for the worst. It’s been three weeks and Brianne’s vitals haven’t changed a bit. You’ll have to start thinking about what to do. Currently, she’s only breathing due to the tube we have down her throat. There’s not much more we can do for your wife, Mr. Watson.”
Chase wasn’t sure how to process the news. How was he to let his wife go? She never even got a chance to meet Amelia. “Thank you.” He nodded solemnly. There was no way he could pull the plug on her.
With a heavy heart, Chase leaned forward, the baby still in his arms and pressed his forehead to Brianne’s. “Come on baby. Wake up. You need to wake up and meet Amy. She looks just like you. She’s got your everything and my eyes. She’s just beautiful babe. So I’m begging you. Wake up. I can’t raise our baby all by myself. I need you.” He started to tear up. It just couldn’t end this way. Not after everything they’d been through together.
