Winona Ryder (for Esquire Magazine, 1992; the third one from photoshoot by Firooz Zahedi, 1992). The photos were made during Bram Stoker’s Dracula era.
Notably, the famous film by Francis Ford Coppola would have never seen the light of day if it wasn’t for Winona Ryder. Ryder came across the script by James V. Hart which she liked immensely and brought it to the attention of Coppola. According to Winona she and Francis liked the same things about the script and Coppola agreed to do the film. Ryder played the role of Mina Murray (Harker)/Elisabeta. “She opened a lot of doors inside me that I didn’t know existed” - said Winona about her role as Mina. The rest is history. Bram Stoker’s Dracula was a box office success and won 3 Oscars (including one for iconic Eiko Ishioka's costumes) - the only film with Dracula in its title to win Oscars. The film had also a considerable impact on popular culture with its various influences on different types of media - from musicals and ballets to books and comics, TV and movies, from Japanese manga Hellsing to series of action-adventure video games Castlevania. While, of course, this effect was caused by the combination of different factors like haunting music and cinematography, lush and sumptuous design, eerie gothic atmosphere, memorable performances of the cast in the film, it’s fair to give the special shout-out to Winona. For she was an initiator of this cinema production and made this cultural impact possible.
I was obsessed with this cover when it came out!
