The Alarming Implications of Kwami Limitations
From what is explained, Tikki and Plagg are fairly powerful and ancient beings. Even with the divine abilities to grant creation and destruction respectively, they do have some straightforward and basic restrictions. It is already well known that as living creatures, it’s necessary for them to eat in order to recharge their energies which is vital for the use of their Miraculous. The show has been very adamant about this fact, stressing the need for Plagg to eat camembert constantly, and Tikki her cookies. There is also, of course, the matter of transformation time restraints once Cataclysm and Lucky Charm are preformed.
But what about other environmental factors that seem to be physical dangers for them?
During the episode Lady Wifi, Plagg had a very problematic situation when he and Adrien were trapped in the walk-in freezer. Obviously as a human and de-transformed, Adrien is sensitive to such temperatures, but for Plagg to be more vulnerable to freezing cold implies that Kwami are much weaker than assumed.
In the episode of Princess Fragrance, Tikki had a similar circumstance. After Ladybug finished fighting an Akuma earlier that day, it clearly shows that she had been exposed to the rain for an extended amount of time. Once de-transformed Marinette is shocked to see that Tikki is quite clearly ill. Although it is not said directly, there is an obvious connection that somehow rain, dampness, or maybe water could be another vulnerability. So far, there doesn’t seem to be another episode where Ladybug or Tikki are openly covered by water for any length of time.
Thankfully for both, despite the very dangerous conditions, recovery for the Kwami was as simple as warming up and healing.
There is however, another physical factor that is less discussed, but may be a much scarier dilemma for both Kwami and wielders. During the episode Rogercop, Plagg becomes unwittingly lodged in Chloe’s bracelet. This is rather strange though, because it is repeatedly shown that they can phase through solid objects. Tikki does this when she opens Adrien’s locker in Copycat and leaves the glass cup in Origins, and Plagg does it when he opens Gabriel’s safe in Volpina.
So then why is a gold bracelet a problem? Was it just a plot device used in that episode for the sake of story convenience? Or perhaps there is something with the gold element that is different which does not allow them to pass through? But what is more worrisome is what Plagg tells Adrien while he is stuck:
“If you transform, the bracelet will be absorbed with me! And it might damage you Miraculous!” This information is highly critical. It infers a major flaw with the Miraculous that could be potentially hazardous, or irreversible.
With all these factors regarding Kwami’s limitations, what could be the worse case scenario that would disadvantage Marinette and Adrien from using their Miraculous?
Imagine if Tikki and Plagg were captured in a pure-gold cage, after a power-drain without cheese or cookies, and exposed to water and freezing temperatures…
These frightening implications, while darker than where the show would likely go, still suggests that these limitations leave the possibility for severe consequences in the battle against Akumas and Hawkmoth.
