Appropriation episode 3
Digressions aside, this episode of Appropriation tackles a university video where a black female student confronts a white male student in regards to the dreads he is styling and cultural appropriation. Despite the many grey areas of cultural appropriation, this video displays how far we’ve come and how far we have to go in finding spaces that are free a these cultural differences and exchanges. On a lighter note or much more tense note, depending on what politics you prioritize…Batman Vs. Superman. SPOILER ALERT. Do not listen if you have not seen the film and plan on. Much of the movie content, politics and our general critiques are discussed. Where do you sit with the movie, the future of the franchise, and are you Team Batman or all for the Man of Steel? On this episode, we tackle a BuzzFeed article on a Toronto man who was escorted off the bus with his son out of suspicion that his son was being kidnapped; the foundation of this suspicion? Albinism. After what may possibly be the longest digressions on this discussion we move forward to talking about an Always campaign on “female representation in Emojis.” After all, who doesn’t need another form of oppression to add onto their list? Welcome to our first episode of Appropriation, a podcast on social/political issues and our opinions on them. Expect potential debates. This episode is on Cultural Appropriation and J.K Rowling. Our episode divulges in how cultural appropriation interacts with many art forms such as Young Adult Fiction. We make the argument for Cultural Appreciation in the case of J.K Rowling’s case and how it differs from other contexts, and scenarios. Following that segment, we discuss a piece on a cringe-worthy Instagram account, @HotMigrants, which is dedicated to posting images of attractive middle eastern refugees.
