PSA: jnsnowv on IG is selling Stranger Things art to enamel pin makers that's made using AI.
I really hate to do this because I love collecting enamel pins, and I feel badly feel for the pinmakers who bought jnsnowv’s designs, but if you're a pin collector paying $$$ for a pin, the artwork should be designed with care. If there was even a little bit of doubt in me that all of these were honest human mistakes I wouldn't be saying anything! I’ve shown this art to a few people, including someone who designs enamel pins, as a sanity check to make sure I’m not baselessly throwing accusations around, and they’ve all agreed it looks like AI.
So, there's someone who goes by the name of jnsnowv/"Dia" on Instagram. They've sold several pieces of art of Stranger Things characters to a few pin makers. I can’t say if all jnsnowv's art is AI (I really, really hope it isn’t!), but there's one Stranger Things piece in particular that is just..off.
At first glance, this looks like a nice piece of Eddie art, right?
Except, the Hellfire Club demon isn't quite right, because it has no nose, and is missing some of its teeth. And it's got what looks like hair behind the ear fins. The weapons on the sides of the demon are replaced with lightning bolts. If you wanted to simplify the design of the shirt, ADDING hair to the demon, removing the nose but leaving the forehead creases is an odd choice.
Next, the Motorhead patch on the vest:
The end of Eddie's hair is intersecting the top of the patch, and there's a whole lot of strangeness going on with the hair and the off-white highlight of the patch. The outline of the patch also bumps up to meet the edge of Eddie's hair. Also, the wings on the patch look really strange. Much more fussy than simplifying the patch's design should be?
First, what's going on with the 'B' in "Club"?
Second, I cannot for the life of me figure out what the pendant on his necklace is supposed to be. It's not the guitar pick. It's not a cross. Some people I’ve shown this to think it looks kind of like the Evenstar pendant from LotR but I think it functions kind of like an inkblot test. And again, if your goal was to simplify Eddie's design for a pin that's a couple inches tall, the guitar pick is literally a red triangle with rounded corners. For me, the pendant is what definitively tipped the scales from “maybe AI, but could be a human artist half-assing it” to “AI was used for at least part of this”. It is complete nonsense.
Even the best case scenario, where I'm completely wrong and this art was 100% human made, all these errors show an extreme lack of attention to detail in the artwork jnsnowv was creating to sell to other people to make into pins. And many of her other ST pieces have similar issues. From just the sheer volume of them, I do not think these are genuine mistakes made by a human artist.
Steve’s shorts aren’t white here because the AI that generated it mixed the white apron he wears at Scoops with his uniform’s shorts, what are you talking about.
