Old Farmdal / Old Roeselare
First thing to note - this cheese has been to space! Now, while I have opinions about pop stars bothering space and would prefer not to give them any more oxygen (ha!), I concede that an astronaut requesting a specific cheese (and getting it) is pretty comment-worthy. Shannon Walker ordered the cheese twice during her stay on the ISS, and NASA first went to the Houston cheese shop from where she'd previously purchased it. Eventually they made contact with Farm 't Groendal in Rumbeke, West Flanders, who sent a piece for testing, and then follow up cheese for delivery 260 miles up.
Oh, and the second thing to note is that the farm's most well-known cheeses are Brokkeloud Roeselare and Oud Roeselare, with the names 'OG Kristal' and 'Old Farmdale' being the rebrands for the US market. Selling it as Old Farmdal in the UK is therefore a bit odd, but there we are.
My piece came, inevitably, from nearer to home than space - the Eggs to Apples farm shop in Hurst Green, East Sussex - although to be fair it had already travelled from the continent. Despite being a gouda style, it's not Dutch but Belgian. The cheesemakers are father and son Johan and Louis Phillipe; Johan started his cheesemaking in 1987 and they now make more than 25 individual styles. The cheeses are later matured by the van Tricht family in Antwerp, Old Farmdal undergoing around 10 months of maturation. It's a pasteurised cows milk cheese made with veggie rennet, and comes in hefty 13kg rounds with a black wax coating which makes them look like polished curling stones. It has a suitably thick, gummy or fudgy bite and is rich and creamy, filled with savoury, caramel and malty notes. It's also stuffed with crunchy, mouthwatering tyrosine crystals that make it addictive to eat.
Unsurprisingly, Old Farmdal has received a silver at the World Cheese awards, although in 2025 their Ancienne Belgique cheese received a perfect 100/100 score at the prestigious Concours International de Lyon, beating over 2,000 entries. That's a Belgian cheese made in a Dutch style winning the award for Best Cheese in the World in France! One to look out for.
