“This reads like fanfiction (it feels like it was written by a preteen, and most of such things posted publicly are fanfic)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (it has a focus on character and relationships, like the style of a lot of modern fanfic)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (it keeps referencing people and events with the assumption that the audience is already familiar with them, like how fanfic doesn’t need to rehash the source material)”
Some further suggestions from the notes:
“This reads like fanfiction (it’s a love story for the ages as long as you can overlook that the author keeps misspelling ‘you're’)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (you can tell the author was having a blast writing this and now so do you reading it)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (the author is clearly info-dumping about a very niche hobby of theirs that they’re passionate about)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (the characters keep getting put in increasingly weirder situations which you’d normally only find in fanfic)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (the author felt the need to rehash the characters from when they were first introduced instead of after several years’ worth of character growth)” vs “This reads like fanfiction (it feels like it had no editor)”
i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
alas...

Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Monaco, and Portugal are the latest United Nation member countries to recognize Palestine statehood, joining over 140 other nations worldwide in this recognition.
Britain's recognition in particular carries weight, because it was their own Balfour Declaration in 1917 in which they declared support for, and promised to facilitate, the zionist settler-colonial project in Palestine.
These declarations of formal recognition come two years into a brutal genocide on the Palestinian people, surrounding the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. (A session in which Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas had to attend virtually because it was taking place in the United States, a country directly facilitating Palestine's genocide, and US authorities denied him a visa).
An editorial in The Daily Star titled "Palestine recognition must be backed by action" captures my own sense of frustrated urgency:
Even as the recognition was announced, Israel continued its bombardment and daily raids across the occupied West Bank, advancing annexation plans that undermine the very notion of a viable Palestinian state... Why have these Western powers still not suspended their military cooperation with Israel, including the sale of arms and technology that are being used to commit atrocities? The continued provision of weapons undermines the very principles of human rights that Western leaders like to talk about. True justice for Palestinians cannot be achieved while the machinery of war is still being supplied... After decades of dispossession, the international community owes them more than symbolic gestures; they must help create the path to a genuine statehood.
We mustn't be placated with declarations. Every nation who claims to oppose the genocide of Palestinians must actually oppose it. Opposition is not an abstract opinion about something. Opposition is committed action that prevents the US and Israeli governments from continuing this genocide.
My friend Ahmed was displaced from Gaza City to Deir al-Balah. I mentioned last week that they had not raised enough to access fuel so they needed to make it the entire distance on foot. Ahmed's brother is injured and this made it even more challenging.
I was relieved today to learn that his family survived the grueling, two-day walk of around 20km, carrying all of their belongings. They couldn't physically carry everything, and so they had to travel this distance without food or water, and had to abandon part of their tent.
Because they are missing part of the tent, they are exposed to animals like insects and rats entering their shelter. Ahmed tells me the prices for food and water are very high in Deir al-Balah and there is no electricity.
Please do what you can to support Ahmed and his family. His family's campaign is #198 on the @gazavetters list. They have only raised €16,008 so far, and desperately need to raise more funds to survive this extremely devastating and physically exhausting displacement.
They need funds for water, food, rent, and healthcare. If at all possible, they also would be much safer if they could afford a new tent that could keep out animals.
My name is Ahmad Aldany. I am reaching out to you from the heart of the daily suff… Ahmed Aldany needs your support for Help Ahmed and his f

Is this how you roll?
So do you think anybody is going acknowledge that Hind Rajab should have been celebrating her 7th birthday today with her family? Do you think anybody is going to acknowledge that?
"The Foundation’s complaint is supported by a year-long investigation drawing on satellite imagery, forensic analysis, and eyewitness accounts. Investigators determined that Israeli tanks fired upon both the civilian vehicle and the ambulance. The tank was within 13 to 23 meters of the family’s car when it opened fire."
On what would have been Hind Rajab’s seventh birthday, the foundation named after her identified her killer as Lieutenant Colonel Beni Aharo
yesterday, the Hind Rajab Foundation identified Hind’s killers for the first time. Support them here:

Oh hey! Haven’t seen this in forever! Didn’t reblog it when it came across me before, not gonna skip it this time, I need some good vibes.
Please support this campaign for Gaza's children and elderly! It's spearheaded by a father in Gaza who works hard on distributing aid within his camp. Getting a supply of diapers is especially critical because they're costing $65-$75 per pack and so parents are resorting to makeshift cloth diapers that are giving their babies rashes.
(Ignore the end of the video where I tell people to comment, that's for algorithmic platforms, here you can just reblog)
The ceasefire agreement was reached and joy is floating among the Palestinian people
The joy is indescribable here all over the Gaza Strip. This thing seems like a literal miracle.
Rafah crossing will be opened tomorrow, God willing. We need help, friends. Please donate.

this morning the United Nations Human Rights Council voted on a resolution calling for a ban on arms sales to Israel and the resolution passed. two Israeli border points opened for aid routes (they were supposedly open? lmao), Biden is calling for an immediate ceasefire, last night was the first without air attacks on Gaza.. the killing of seven foreign aid workers shook the world apparently, but oh god how late. the journey to recognising genocide for some seems to avoid acknowledging the humanity of thousands of Palestinians who have been murdered
