As soon as he heard his name, the boy spun around. Without missing a heartbeat, he ran towards the voice (even stumbling at first in his haste). He felt a huge weight lifting off his shoulders once he realized he found her. However, he couldn’t be relieved. Not at the sight of her because that was just it. The sight of Chelsea in such a torn-up state started a sinking feeling in the pit of Emmett’s stomach. He slowed his steps as he approached her, practically dropping to the ground once he was beside her.
“God, Chels, what’d they do to you?” he muttered. A part of him wanted to reach out, another was scared she’d flinch away. His eyes suddenly became heavy and his gaze dropped to the ground because of it. He found it hard to speak as if his voice became sandpaper against his windpipe. However, he still managed to croak something out. “—What happened?”
This was her best friend in the world, but she couldn’t help but remember that he was alive and after what she had done, she didn’t even trust herself to hug him. Not able to even meet his eyes she turned her head, staring into what was beyond the river - maybe it was time that moved on, into the after. “It wasn’t them,” she answered, voice barely louder than a whisper.
“It was me,” she confessed, voice breaking off into a sob as soon as she had said it. “Emmy, I hurt people - I killed people and it wasn’t me. And I don’t understand what happened, but I would never do that. You know that, right?” She turned back to look at him, hope and tears swimming in her eyes in equal parts.
