i don't mind the "grian crash-lands on hermitcraft while fleeing from the watchers" trope, but its dominance in fanon completely dismisses the fact that grian was chosen by the hermits and chose to be there in return. if my memory serves me correctly, he was invited several times, which means he was voted for by all hermits at least twice, if not more; which means he was a long-awaited guest. and grian was only ready for a radical change like this when one day his old life became less promising than a sealed envelope in mumbo's hands.
the hermits would help a stich-like alien in any possible scenario. it's the part of their culture, their social expectations, their morals, their characters. but it wouldn't be their will. and if the watchers eventually came for him, both grian and the hermits would have no agency in the disaster that just happened to fall on their heads.
now, compare it to the world where grian chose to be a watcher. where grian chose to never tell anyone about what happened. where the hermits chose grian, and where grian chose them. and where several years later, grian chose to create the death games -- but didn't know what he'd done. the world where the watchers fooled grian and took their souls.
imagine the big reveal. the hermits discover what happened. will they blame grian? will they blame themselves for letting it happen? or will they blame themselves for letting grian in?
what hurts more -- an accident or a deception? a god's will or thirty pieces of silver?
