i think (= in my opinion, from my perspective, subjectively) hermitrcaft has hit its most boring spot since early seasons and i think (subjectively) it stems from the all-time low stakes in narration. what will change in the overall narrative if half of the hermits decides to leave on a several months long vacation while their friends and competitiors take over? nothing. nothing at all. stakes mean "if i don't act right now the thing i don't want to happen will happen". if i don't build this giant robot for our mayoral campaign right now we will lose the race, if we don't replant the soil right now the entire island will be covered with mycelium and the autority of our mayor will be shattered, if we don't ally and take action and leave right now the moon will fall on our heads, if we don't fight back right now we will never come back home, if we don't protest the poepoe right now we will be exiled or silenced forever, etc. etc.. and now whenever i watch the hermits i can't escape the feeling that i'm watching the same episode over and over again. intro - an overdragged one-person bit - the latest stream, condenced - inspiring but static build - outro. yeah sure i can just stop watching but maybe i care and maybe it's sad to see that it becomes a repetitive monthly ritual rather than a story
oh also i hope you know you can't tell a good story without being vulnerable. to have high stakes you must have a good conflict, to have a good conflict you must have a weakness or an unfulfilled desire or something to change inside yourself, to show those sides of yourself you must be vulnerable. you basically can't tell a good story if there's not a single bit of discomfort and not a single path you haven't already walked. the grumbo arcs of season 7 and season 9 are so great because grian allows himself to spill his uncomfortable and awkward feelings out even when it leads to rejection and silence. admitting you need somebody is a vulnerability and a weakness (narratively speaking) and I EAT THAT SHIT UUUUPPP. but now the only storytelling we get is in like, buildstone and npcs. the waterfall you've just built is undoubtedly awesome yeah but what about that darkness within you?
