To my dearest Harold,
Well, that sounded sappy. Not my style, no. I prefer to keep things.. light. But I suppose you know that by now since we’re in the same band and all that jazz. Let me put things in your own words, “You’re a light-hearted individual, not wanting things to take a serious turn since you’d suddenly feel uncomfortable when things get too serious.” Well, maybe you are right. Maybe I do hate it when things get serious. I definitely hate it when things get too serious. Well, except for one instance when things got serious and I kinda liked it. In fact, I loved it.
It was the time we fell in love with each other.
There’s just something about you which makes me feel bloody happy and so complete, Harry. I for one have never felt that towards anyone else. Not even for Hannah and that’s saying something. You made me feel like I was the biggest star around and you made me feel like I could actually do things. You brought out the best in me and made me realize that I was actually, for once, worth something. You were a gift in my life, Harry. And I feel absolutely pained that I lost you.. that I could no longer call you mine.
It killed me every time I read something on the fucking internet saying that you were dating this and you were dating that. Jealousy spikes up in me every time I see your name beside this girl’s name. But who am I to be jealous right? I lost you. You didn’t come back to me. I hurt you too much. That’s the biggest mistake I’ve ever committed in my entire life.
I feel so stupid now. Looking back on every mistake I have made, I therefore conclude that I may be the stupidest, dumbest wanker alive on Earth. Your eyes no longer hold that little twinkle I love whenever we see each other. Your mouth no longer moves to say how much you love me whenever I tell you that I do. Your hands no longer find their way into mine so that our fingers may be laced. Your arms no longer position themselves around my waist whenever you come up behind me. And your heart? Well…
Your heart no longer holds me inside and keeps me safe there.
It hurts.. But that’s the bitter truth, I guess. I won’t make this longer or anything. My hand already feels tired from writing so many drafts of this single letter that I have to cut it short here. In all honest, I don’t know why I really wrote this but to make things clearer, I’m here to say one thing.

For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.
Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.
Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.
This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.
When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.
Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.
I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.
