Punctuating Dialogue

Daily Writing Challenge for February

Just wanted to make sure that my stuff doesn't get lost in the ether, so I'm posting them here.

I had a lot of fun doing this challenge. I'm very lucky to have stumbled upon this (Daily Writing Challenge) by this user. Some of their prompts and drabble ideas were good and helped me with coming up with more ideas for fics or helped me shaped my dialogue and stuff like that.

But I have to say, doing this for the entire month of Februrary was nice, and I did it with my best friend and I can say that it has motivated me a bit more to write again. I can't wait to share entries for our March Writing Challenge.

Day 28 - From the Daily Writing Challenge

Which was honestly unexpected, even for her. However, the mother that had come in was eager to find out more about the day care, saying that she had kids of her own and wasn’t keen on hiring a sitter.

It wasn't the first time Sana dealt with this. There would always be unexpected moments where people passing by find the daycare, come in and inquire. Their marketing could only do so much, but natural instances like these were a pleasant surprise.

Sana was always prepared for it. The girls even said that she was the only one capable of talking to adults with such a pleasing aura, since their energy was only reserved for the children and babies. It made sense; Sana didn't mind doing it for the team.

She quickly opened the door to the office and bowed at the mother who was waiting in front of the desk. “Sorry to keep you waiting,” she said, quickly going back to her seat. She let out a breath and smiled at the woman, going back to their discussion. “So, how old are your kids?"

Day 27 - From the Daily Writing Challenge

The knife that twisted inside your chest. Sometimes you wish it was the actual thing. 

You had to face the truth, because you’re no coward. 

A paw touches your arm gently, you look up, and deep, blue eyes look at you. They were filled with tears and yet they were still comforting. It wasn’t enough to heal, however. Despite how much love it gives. 

You stare down at her. 

Lifeless. 

The sound of her boisterous laughter still rings in your ears, the way she calls your name, or even speaks to her faction. She was feisty and compassionate. Everything you weren’t. But the love you have for her couldn’t be compared. She was like your sister, a friend, a leader. 

Now she’s dead. 

And it’s because she tried to save you. 

Your emotions fail you once more, unable to let go of what you really feel. 

The war was over. Thibault is dead. 

But it wouldn’t have happened if she didn’t sacrifice herself for everyone. 

It was like your nightmares coming to life once more. But the only difference was that you weren’t on a boat, watching from a distance. You weren’t careful enough and she saved you. 

The knife that stuck within Thibault's chest and the one that twisted into her stomach. 

You weren’t even able to say thank you.

Day 26 - From the Daily Writing Challenge

You always wondered why your mother peeled tangerines for you. 

Sometimes you ask her if you could do it yourself, because you want to prove to her that you're capable of yourself and that you want to. 

But each time she refuses. Almost every time. And the silliest thing is that you never get upset whenever she rejects your request. Perhaps it's because of the smile she makes whenever she does peel the orange for you, or the fact that the kitchen starts to smell like tangerines mixed with your mother's fruity perfume. 

Or because she makes silly little figures with the tangerine peels. 

And you don't get how she does it. Because they're very creative and incredibly difficult to shape. But she does it, expertly and it becomes the reason why you don't mind that she peels the tangerines for you. 

She makes hearts, circles, squares, punches holes to make a smiley face. When there are moments she takes too long, you find out it's because had been making something even more elaborate. Like a paw print, or a duck, sometimes she would make a bread slice made of tangerines. 

All of the creations she's made, you've kept them in a jar because you don't want her to throw them away. What she made was too precious to be forgotten forever. You needed to keep them. 

“Eomma,” you call out to her as you eat a slice of tangerine, picking on the heart she just made for you. It was probably the sixth or seventh one she made. She hummed as she was carving another shape, and you watched carefully as she skillfully did so. “Why do you make these?”

She looks at you. “The shapes?”

You nod. 

She smiles at you again. “Because I love you.”

That made you blink, feeling something warm inside your chest. “I love you too,” you mumble. “But… is that the only reason why?”

“Sometimes you don’t really need a reason,” she says, still carving the intricate shape on the dried up peel. “Sometimes I just need to look at you and then I have a reason. I like doing this for you.”

Day 25 - From the Daily Writing Challenge

Detergent. Check. 

Fabric softener. But the way it was written as ‘sofner’ made you smile. You knew this was just out of fun. Check. 

More paper towels. Check. 

Dishwashing soap. Check. 

Olive oil. Check. 

And…

Snacks :3 

You giggle, it was a cute drawing. Which is funny because your cart was already half filled with said snacks. You didn’t even have to get it yourself.  

Alright. 

Unsure, you decided to take another good look around. Because there will always be cases where you forget something and the only time you do remember is when you’re already home. 

You’re not going to make the same mistake again. 

“Jisoo?”

You look up, surprised to see a familiar face. Your first instinct was to pretend you don’t remember her, but that’s impossible. You can’t run away either because she wasn’t stupid. There was no turning back. You couldn’t hold in your smile, no matter what happened, you still missed this person dearly. 

“Nayeon!” you call out, trying to mask the delay of your response with the enthusiasm in your voice. 

Your friend holds in a squeal and rushes towards you, wrapping you up in her usual tight embraces. If anything, you missed it. Quite a lot. 

“Oh my god, how are you?” She then pulls away and then looks at you, eyes darting everywhere. “I’m so happy that you’re back in town!” 

A smile escapes you. It’s no surprise she said that. You wouldn’t be back if it wasn’t for that one reason you had. 

You hold her hand tight. “Yeah, I decided it was time to settle down.” Then you proudly show her the gold band on your finger. 

She squeals. It was the same sound you were used to, like she hasn’t changed since high school. You used to be annoyed by it, but now it just made you feel right at home.

Like you made a good choice. 

Your mind goes to different places as she asks you questions at lightning speed. Where did you get married, when did you get married. Who you got married to. 

The answers were at the tip of your tongue. But then she pauses because something caught her attention. “Soo-yah, you’re not a snacky person. Are these for your kids?”

And that caught you off guard. You look down at your shopping cart and the amount of chips, chocolates, gummies and popcorn that were in there. 

Kids? 

That made you smile warmly. 

You shook your head at her. “No, it’s not for my kids. I actually don’t have kids.” 

Nayeon raised her brow. “No kids?” Then her expression changes, a little mischievous now. “Or not yet?”

Before you answer her, just to clear the air, you hear heavy footsteps and huffing. 

“Ah! Jagiya! There you are!” Lisa runs to you and then gently touches your shoulder. “Can we add more chips? I saw the ones you like!” 

“Of course, Jagiya.” You grab her hand, caress it by habit. “Lisa, this is my friend, Nayeon,” you say, making sure you weren’t in the way. 

As always, Lisa’s face lights up and then extends her hand. “Hi! Nice to meet you!” 

Nayeon copied her expression, taking her hand immediately, matching the energy. “Hi! Oh my gosh! Same here!” 

This wasn’t something you expected. 

If anything, you thought coming back home was the worst possible idea ever. Because the only thing that you remembered about this place was the trauma it caused you. How your dad abandoned you at the bus stop, how your mother treated you like you never existed. It was just your older siblings that ever gave a shit about what happened to you. 

But it was all in the past. 

You know now that you’re healed from it. Perhaps it was because you were always the gutsy one, or that you were braver than your fears. Maybe it was because of her. Because no matter where you guys were, she was always with you, holding your hand, smiling brightly at you.

For once, you don’t feel regret. You’re actually happy you came back home.

And all it took was a trip to the grocery store.
