Console - 2 minute film
For my 2 minute film, I wanted to show that technology does not alienate or make families distant as it is sometimes perceived. Originally I planned to have more family members visit the grandmother character but decided I would not have enough time to animate them all. Though in some crit sessions I was advised to take the granddaughter character out of my film, I thought it would be better if I just reworked some scenes in order to increase her time on screen as well as including more subtle interactions with the rest of the family. I believe having only the grandchildren visit emphasises the technological gap between the older and younger generation. During pre-production, I decided to use a new program called Aseprite to do the pixel art as Photoshop and other software did not specialise with this type of animation. Eventually, I got the hang of drawing at a smaller scale with more simple designs to fit the 8-bit aesthetic and I am glad I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to using a different subtle. Timing was sometimes an issue as scenes I put in the animatic needed more time to play out in the final animation. As a result, some shots were cut out for others to be extended and have better pace. Overall, I am happy with the end result of my film, however if I had more time I would fix some inconsistencies with the backgrounds and props.
