Hubby told me tonight about leexten being made cannon from Naruto and I’ll admit, had a bit of a crash out. Reminded me when I got to Mockingjay and it ended with Katniss and Peeta getting married and having kids. You’re presented with this character who is against having kids and has their own hopes and dreams that want/need to be fleshed out and suddenly they’re submissive housewife??? No, I’m glad that Lee and tenten got a divorce. They’re way too much like brother and sister.
My personal headcanon isn’t much different from canon had Neji survived and they’d be married. She’d still be an inventor and shop owner and neji would be the cute housewife making sure the kid had the best education and food. My version of their only kid would also be himawari’s age because there was so much they wanted to do before they decided to go ahead and have one (or there was a surprise baby, which is what metal lee most likely is).
But we never get to see Tenten grow, despite her being named Kishimoto’s fave kunoichi. What is it with manga authors and being terrible at writing women? Lol. And I get that the story is about Naruto and they are background characters. But dang if they weren’t more interesting than the main three by far.
TLDR; not everyone wants to get married and have babies and if your character has never spent any time developing towards that, don’t shove them into that position last second as a sort of “happy ending”.
