I think “the will to change” is a very interesting book to read as a trans man/transmasc person

because from the start of the book, bell hooks proposes that we have to stop deciding men are inherently evil if we ever want to make an equal world, and that feminists who decide young boys are dangerous catalysts of future men are part of the problem, and that mothers and women are just as programmed to aid in the programming of boys to become those detached men.

She talks about how cis men are raised to believe that if they detach from their emotional selves, sacrifice their feeling sense and joy and excitement and kindness and replace it with an unfeeling, unquestioning of the system one, that they will be rewarded with fulfillment in life (sex, money, security). And how when this is not true, as it is now becoming more and more so, (good) they have no emotional outlet so they decide to turn to harming their loved ones, because growing up they were shown that rage is one of the only acceptable states a man can be in.

She talks about her younger brother, how she watched the boyish joy of life in him fade to a quiet kind of violence from years of moments from their mom and dad telling him not to cry, not to be kind and soft to his sisters.

She wrote all of that (and so much more I highly recommend) and we’re still in a place where people genuinely think that masculinity itself and being a man inherently is bad. Where trans men are told that when they say they are men, they must mean the one who capitalist patriarchy creates, and there is no alternative. This is part of the programming. If you cannot imagine an alternative kindness from men, you have been programmed to have no hope for them, too, the same one that tells them they can never change, why bother.

You can masculine and not be that man, masculinity is what you make of it. We get to create the future, become the men we hope to be, not the ones we’ve been told are the only option.
