RWBY- i.e. A Group of Badass Chicks

A story, by Rooster Teeth, about hunters and huntresses in training out to kill monsters known as Grimm, to protect their people. Learn more about the main team of the show known as RWBY: Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Blake Belladonna, and Yang Xiao Long. 

*Disclaimer: This is technically not an anime, but Mounty Oum (Rest in Peace) did call in anime when he came up with the idea. So for our purposes, it is anime*

Plot: It starts off with Ruby Rose trying to help a dust store from being robbed, she fails to catch the culprit but the event leads her to being introduced to headmaster of the school meant to train hunters and huntresses. Okay so background on the world that it is set in is really best described in the beginning of the first episode, but I'll try my best.  

In the world they live in, there is a thing that they call dust, which allows them to use the elements while fighting. The reason they have to fight is because of the creatures of Grimm. They are basically monsters that threaten the existence of humanity, and its the hunter’s job to protect that existence. But as the story gets told, you learn that there are other problems that the hunters have to fight against. 

This could also be considered a coming of age story, as the main characters learn and grow together from their many new experiences and ambitions.

My reaction: The animation in the beginning bothered me a bit simply cause I wasn't really used to it, but as the show progressed it got better and I did get used to it. Volumes 1 and 2, while they do in fact have their serious moments, are kind of on the lighter fun side of things, which I really like, and then Volume 3 is just like.. Damn. Things really went down. All three volumes connect, the villain doesn't change while the information about them increases. And I also know that the people of Rooster Teeth said that the first 3 volumes was really just to set up the actual story and conflict. So get pumped for more exciting volumes in the near future!

Does the banished princess have the capabilities to protect her country?

Will she be able to change herself to protect those dear to her?

Akatsuki no Yona by Kusanagi Mizuho is a story about a girl who's life drastically changed after one event, and whose view of a loved one altered into a negative one.

Plot: Our protagonist, Yona, starts off as a spoiled princess who is doted on by her father and is head over heels in love wih her cousin Soo Won. That is until Soo Won kills his uncle and drives Yona out of the castle. Now with her protector (and possible love interest) Hak, wondering accross her country, she learns the true state of her people and sets out to find the mythical Four Dragans in order to help her country from the shadows.

In reality, this show can be seen as a coming of age show, as everything starts when she is at the young age of 16. Throughout the show and manga, you see the change in Yona as she travels, and a change in the people she encounters. It really is a good story with its intense drama and action scenes, and the lighter comedic aspects thrown in as well.

My Reaction: OMG I NEED TO SHOW THIS TO EVERYONE I KNOW! Honestly, it didn't matter whether the person I showed likes anime or not, I still tried to show them. This is legit one of my favorite things ever. Look at the GIF and tell me that Yona isn't a badass chick. Who doesn't like their badass female characters. 

I also formed a love-hate relationship with Soo Won, cause while his side of the story is explained in a way, he still did in fact kill Yona's dad. But then there is also the fact that if he hadn't done that, Yona wouldn't have become who she becomes as the story progresses, and the dragons wouldn't have been reunited again. 

Oh, the feels.

The Generation of Miracles is something else entirely

What if a single team is filled with extraordinarily and unfathomably skilled members? It’s almost not fair.

To understand Kuroko No Basket by Fujimaki Tadatoshi without watching or reading it, imagine a middle school basketball team whose member’s skills are incomparable to anyone else. What happens when said members each decided to go to a different high school? Who is greater than the rest? Now imagine a newcomer that breaks open the door that separates the Generation of Miracles and the rest of the high school basketball playing population.

Plot: So to start of, there is the Generation of Miracles, pictured above, who a group of 6 regulars on a middle school basketball team, though one of them is known as the phantom 6th member of the team. They all split up and go to different high schools, and story follows the phantom member, Kuroko, and a new player who moved to Japan from America, Kagami, as they fight other members of the Generation of Miracles and their respective schools. 

My reaction: I tend to personally like sports anime like this, but omitting that matter, the animation and story really made this one of the better anime

 I’ve watched. The whole idea of this handful of people with an uncanny ability and this newcomer who tries to beat them all is cliche but so appreciated by me. I wish I could say more about the manga but I didn’t actually read a lot of it. I read maybe a chapter or two and I didn’t want to really give you any false reactions to it. I would have continued reading it though if I had read it before watching it because I got used to the anime art style before the manga one. 

And extra note, I showed the first episode of this to my cousin, and she had finished all 3 seasons by the next weekend…

What if you got a letter from the future you?

If you could stop something bad from happening, would you?

Orange by Takano Ichigo explores these concepts perfectly. It is a heart-clenching must read shoujo manga about a boy who wants to commit suicide, and his new found friends who try to stop him.

Plot: It starts off with the main female protagonist,Takamiya Naho, receiving a letter from who claimed to be her future self. Obviously, she doesn't believe it at first, but as events in the letter come into play, like the new transfer student, Naruse Kakeru, that shows up that very day, it becomes apparent that the letter really does know the future. She tries her best to make sure she doesn't have the same regrets as the one who wrote the letters does. One of the biggest regrets written in the letter is the death of the transfer student, who she has personally gotten close to before the occurrence. 

My reaction: Without giving away too much, I will say that I loved the story. The ending got me a little, and while I expected it to happen that way, it still hurt how it ended for one of the characters as he basically gave up his happiness for them. But all in all, this is a 22 chapter manga that is fairly quick to read that has comedic aspects as well as the darker more serious themes, like suicide. 

All in all, if you like romance and drama and some heart clenching moments, read this.
