Congratulations to Danielle Colaprico, Julie Ertz, and Sofia Huerta on making the NWSL’s Second XI!
Chicago Red Stars have acquired Kristie Mewis in a trade with the Washington Spirit.
Visible impact: Sofia Huerta could be more than just another player for USA
“My favorite thing about being Mexican-American is just having the culture in me.” It’s one of the first things Chicago Red Stars forward Sofia Huerta tells me when I ask what her favorite thing about being Mexican-American is.
When U.S. women’s national team head coach Jill Ellis announced the roster for the 2017 Tournament of Nations, it held all the familiar names of the senior national team. The press release listed several allocated players and a few NWSL standouts. It revealed facts about the team, and where and how to watch the upcoming Tournament of Nations.
In between all that was an interesting bit of news: Chicago Red Stars forward Sofia Huerta, 24, has been invited to train with the team for the duration of the tournament. U.S. Soccer is also filing a change of association with FIFA on Huerta’s behalf. Huerta played with Mexico in the 2012 U-20 World Cup, and some international friendlies as well, but is not cap-tied to Mexico. If approved, Huerta could have the opportunity to play for the United States.
FOUR RED STARS MAKE ROSTER FOR 2017 TOURNAMENT OF NATIONS
USA Will Face Australia on July 27 in Seattle, Brazil on July 30 in San Diego and Japan on Aug. 3 in Carson, Calif.
CHICAGO – U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Jill Ellis has named Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, Christen Press and Casey Short among the 23-player roster for the 2017 Tournament of Nations that will feature the USA, Japan, Australia and Brazil playing in three doubleheader events at three different venues over an eight-day period. Forward Sofia Huertawill be brought into camp to train with the WNT during the tournament.
For the second time this year, after the staging of the SheBelieves Cup in March, U.S. Soccer will host four of the best women’s soccer teams in the world over six games among opponents who are familiar with each other and have exciting soccer histories. The USA is currently ranked first in the world, Japan is sixth, Australia is seventh and Brazil is eighth. All six tournament matches will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks and fans can follow along and stay up-to-date on the latest news via the U.S. Soccer social channels on Twitter (@ussoccer_wnt), Instagram (ussoccer_wnt) and Facebook.
The U.S. team will come together in Seattle on July 23 for three days of training before opening the tournament against Australia on July 27 at CenturyLink Field (7 p.m. PT on ESPN) in the first meeting between the two sides since the opening match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Brazil and Japan will play the first game of the doubleheader at 4:15 p.m. PT (ESPN3)
All the teams will then travel to down to San Diego, where Japan will face Australia on Sunday, July 30 (2:15 p.m. PT on ESPN3) followed by the USA taking on Brazil (5 p.m. PT on ESPN2) at Qualcomm Stadium. The tournament will finish on Thursday, August 3, at StubHub Center in Carson, California, as Australia takes on Brazil (4:15 p.m. PT on ESPN3) and the USA faces Japan (7 p.m. PT on ESPN2).
The winner of the tournament will be based on total points (three for a win, one for a tie), with the first tie-breaker being overall goal difference, followed by most total tournament goals scored, then head-to-head result and lastly, FIFA Ranking if necessary.

She began her professional career playing for NTV Beleza of the Nadeshiko League, Japan’s Division I women’s soccer league. In 2013, Nagasato transferred to English-side Chelsea FC of the FA Women’s Super League. She finished her career for the club after 2 seasons, appearing in 18 matches and scoring five goals.
