There are many songs I love that I can rant about for various reasons, so I decided to make a place where I can get all these emotions out. I decided to go in alphabetical order. Unfortunately, I'm usually limited to one post a day because of Tumblr's audio uploading rules, but oh well!

"All You Want" - Dido

Dido's music is very nostalgic for me because she's one of those artists that I really remember my parents buying and playing the albums of a lot when I was a young kid in elementary school (that and the Beatles, haha). My dad was especially into Dido. I think my family first got into Dido because she's the artist of the theme song to the old TV show Roswell we used to watch? (The theme song was "Here With Me" by Dido.)

Anyways, I remember being a little kid and just lying on my dad's bed while listening to this Dido album.. not doing anything, just lying there and listening to the whole thing.

...Which may or may not have been good for my little kid self, seeing as the album this song comes from is rather depressing. ._.

Hhnngg, those low strings, though. I LOVE strings in modern music so, so very much.. and you'll probably hear me say that a lot in this blog! ^^;; Strings are great, but the fact that a lot of Dido songs use LOW strings (such as this song) sounds especially great to me.

I also think the main chorus of this song is unique because I don't hear songs sung in that second person perspective very often. There's plenty of music out there with "All I want" and "I want you to __", but not "All YOU want".

...That, combined with the low strings, is a very interesting effect.

"All the Right Moves" - OneRepublic

There are a lot of OneRepublic songs that I love, but for some reason, the songs they release on the radio are always the ones on their albums that I'm very "meh" about. (I don't dislike them, I just personally think the other songs on their albums are much, much better)

...With the exception of THIS song

THIS is OneRepublic's only song they've released on the radio that I really genuinely love. (But it didn't last on the radio for very long ;__;)

THIS SONG MAKES ME IMAGINE A WHOLE STORY IN MY HEAD

AND I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE, THIS MAY SOUND SILLY WHEN TYPED OUT

This song makes me imagine a high school couple that are the most popular guy and girl in their school. In the beginning of the song, life is really awesome for them, really no troubles at all.. tons of friends, everything's great.

All the right friends in all the right places So yeah, we're going down They've got all the right moves and in the right faces So yeah, we're going down Let's paint the picture Of the perfect place They've got it better than what anyone's told ya They'll be the king of hearts, and you're the queen of spades Then we'll fight for you like we were your soldiers

...But then all of their crowd starts getting into the meth scene

Being as popular as they are, this couple has plenty of connections, and therefore plenty of pressure to join in on this meth scene that everyone else they're connected to are getting into. It's getting to be a really huge deal.

However, this couple feels very unsure about it.

I know we got it good, but they got it made, And their grass is getting greener each day I know things are looking up, but soon they'll take us down Before anybody's knowing our name They've got all the right friends in all the right places So yeah, we're going down They've got all the right moves in all the right faces So yeah, we're going down

Also, word is spreading around the school that all of this popular crowd is getting into the meth scene, even to the teachers. Since this is done outside of school and there's no proof that it's actually happening, they can't do anything about it, all the teachers are really doing it looking upon these students with disapproving looks and judgment on their faces. As our two main characters walk the halls in the schools, the teachers assume they're in the meth scene too (what with them being to the two most popular students), and just look at them with disappointment and disapproval.

So, since people are doing meth at basically all of the popular hangouts now, the couple goes to one of these hangouts, but they walk around without trying it at all. Neither of them want to do it, really. They don't like where any of this is going and they don't want to get involved with hardcore drugs.

...Some of the other people in this crowd don't like that, though. They take our male main character, separate him from the girl, take him outside, and rough him up..

Our male main character somehow manages to break out of the fight, and hurries back inside, more panicked about the fact that he's been separated from his girlfriend more than anything else. He runs around, looking all over for her, but can't find her. But then he DOES find her..

..Just in time to see her trying meth for the first time, having finally succumbed to the huge amount of peer pressure.

The story doesn't have a happy ending. It ends with it being implied that the girl is now addicted, and the boy was too late to have stopped her.

All the right moves...

This all sounds incredibly lame when I type it out like this, I'm sorry. ;__; Hopefully if you listen to the song, you'll hear some of it in the song. The song definitely has tones of melancholy in it. At first when I told this story to Casper and showed him this song, he couldn't see it, but then when he listened to it again, he said he could see it. I dunno.

"42" - Coldplay

THE LONG INSTRUMENTAL BREAK

THAT FREAKING INSTRUMENTAL BREAK IS SO FREAKING INTENSE

HHHHHNNNNGGG

By far one of my most favorite instrumental breaks in a modern song. I LOVE the growing intensity. It starts off fairly simply, and then grows in intensity up to the point where he starts singing lyrics again. It almost makes me sad when the instrumental break is over since that’s my favorite part. D:

I would love to see a freaking movie trailer with that instrumental break as their background music.

"1979" - The Smashing Pumpkins

I would LOVE to listen to this song during a nighttime car ride with a bunch of friends.

This song always makes me imagine having a blast with a large group of people, all the while knowing perfectly well it’s not going to last forever.. but just accepting that and being okay with it. As if I know I’m in the process of creating memories, and how even though I’m going to look back on it one day and miss it dearly, I’m chill with that. The song has so much acceptance in it, I dunno.

And we don’t know Just where our bones will rest To dust, I guess

…It’s like I just want to give a big shrug during that “To dust, I guess” line.

My absolute favorite part of the song is this part near the end, though:

Lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we’d go Beneath the sound of hope

The music changes a little during this part, and I LOVE it. Definitely the climax of the song, for me. It makes me imagine that that my friends in I (during our nighttime car ride) have been out in the country side, but are approaching the city in the distance, which is below some large hill we’re on.. and you can see all of the city lights below us (“To the lights and towns below”).

There’s definitely slight tones of melancholy in this song, which I love as well.

"1234" - Feist I've always heard a tone of "Keep on truckin', there are a lot of others your same age that are truckin' along too" when I listen to this song. It's a difficult feeling to explain. Sleepless long nights That is what my youth was for ...I probably mentally sing these lyrics to myself more than any other lyrics from any other song. Starting when I was in high school, there have been many reasons why I've been up into ridiculous hours of the night.. some of them not super fun. Regardless of the reason, whenever I'm up really late at night and wish I could go to bed, but CAN'T because of whatever particular reason (most commonly because of homework), I think about these lyrics. It makes me wonder if in the future when I'm older, I'll no longer have nights where I stay up ridiculously late. And I'll think about these lyrics and about all the different reasons why I used to stay up late. ...I understand that it's only two short little lines, but they're still something I keep in mind! ^^;;
