Edward Hall, who started writing his chronicle in 1535, broke the mould when he stated that Elizabeth “was a woman more of formal countenance, than of excellent beauty, but yet of such fresh beauty and favour, that with her sober demeanour, lovely looking, and feminine smiling (neither too wanton nor too humble) . . . she allured and made subject to her the heart of so great a King”.

I have read books and it is said that during the Tudor period, many chronicles that appeared to write 'ew' actually hinted at 'ab.' If Hall's words describe Anne, it seems very appropriate

the more I think about it, I can't really see what Starkey means by suggesting that Jane wasn't ‘stubborn and wilful’ — this narrative of Jane as the perfect submissive, silent broodmare just... doesn't seem to be backed up by actual fact. in actuality, he seems to have been rather disenchanted with her early on, and disappointed that Jane wasn't totally submissive, in fact, bound to obey and serve. Especially in conversations regarding Mary.
