Even the smallest, most ordinary things can become a spell if you handle them with a little extra thought and consideration.
Energy Update: Eclipse Season September 2025
The Basics
There was a (dramatic music): Total Eclipse of the Sun!
(Moon this time, but who's counting when we could sing musical numbers)
Of the many celestial events we experience, our solar and lunar eclipses garner the most attention, and for good reason! A solar eclipse can block out the light of the brightest day, and a lunar eclipse often glows low and red in the sky. The eclipses felt magical and unpredictable to the layperson, but they are actually one of the earliest astronomical phenomena that sky gazers figured out.
The Sun, Earth, and Moon move in their orbits in particular ways that we can map out and predict. When they align in one way, the Earth falls directly between the Sun and Moon, blocking out the light of a full moon. When they align in the other way, the Moon passes in front of the Sun, momentarily blocking us from its light. These two events happen twice a year in pairs*, precisely two weeks apart.
Astronomers and astrologers have been studying this for so long that we know the two points in the sky - where, at any exact moment in time, the Sun and Moon would have to sit to create a perfect (total) eclipse. We call these points the lunar nodes.
The lunar nodes move much like the planets, but they are different in that they move in retrograde motion (backward through the signs of the horoscope). Each set of nodes spends about 1.5 years in a given set of opposing signs.
Remember: our lunar events are created by an opposition or conjunction between the Sun and the Moon. We have a new moon when the Sun and Moon share the same degree. We have a full moon when the Sun and Moon share the same degree in opposing signs.
In January, our lunar nodes changed positions from the axis of Aries-Libra to Pisces-Virgo. This changes the signs our eclipses will fall into, as eclipses always occur in conjunction with either the North or South Node.
This will be our first eclipse season where the solar and lunar eclipses will both fall on the Pisces-Virgo axis; we will experience a partial solar eclipse in Virgo and a total lunar eclipse in Pisces. Although we had an eclipse cycle earlier in the year, one of the two eclipses still fell on the "old" axis of Aries-Libra due to the recent nodal switch.
*Very occasionally threes, but I digress.
The Nitty Gritty
Eclipses are often maligned by superstition and sometimes firsthand experience; there is no denying that. Even with all the modern technology and understanding of how lucky (!!!!) we are to experience this celestial phenomenon, they still can feel liminal at best or downright terrifying if you aren't prepared for them.
Superstition and fear are handy elements for the magician, right? Yet many people caution against the backfire effect of casting magic during and around eclipses.
I won't tell you what to do; I'm not your Mom, and I don't care that much. If you are the type who needs to be in complete control, DNI. And the other half of that caveat, if you like to fuck around and find out, eclipses are the day to do it.
Since astrology has been in bed with magic since the Middle Ages, you can see astrological transits as opening and closing windows and doors that increase or decrease your success rates with certain types of magic. One door makes you larger (with Jupiter in it), and another makes you small...
Eclipses do something else. They open the windows AND the doors.
Some people claim they open the RIGHT windows and doors and close others, and that you should pay attention because you can learn a lot about your life and who should be in it during eclipse season, and I have found this advice to be sound in my own life, so I will pass it along.
Eclipses are wildcard energy and turn everything up to 11. It can go really, really well or exceptionally poorly. Maybe both, one right after another. Perhaps both at precisely the right time.
Whenever I see an astrologer who has decided that they can predict a particular eclipse season, I smile a little bit.
You can't see what's on the other side of a door that hasn't been opened yet. You can guess, and maybe even make an educated guess.
But that door is still closed.
That door opens on 9/7 at 2:09 PM (EDT/UTC-4:00).
May the fates be in your favor, or whatever.
Not all people notice all eclipses - some people are not sensitive to whatever is going on around them for whatever reason (I sure wish I had that superpower), and the closer the eclipse season overlaps with your natal birth chart, the more you will likely be affected. However, eclipses don't just occur in our personal lives - they also impact the energy of the entire world.
Overall, eclipse energy is considered highly liminal, existing outside of time. We can say that this energy begins on 9/7 with our total lunar eclipse at 15° Pisces and ends on 9/21 with our solar eclipse at 29° Virgo. That puts the degrees between 15°-29° of Virgo and Pisces in particular, but also the other mutable signs (Gemini and Sagittarius) and earth and water signs in the hot seat. You can examine your natal birth chart to see how this eclipse may impact your life by considering any planets it aspects and where it falls in your chart, taking into account its house placement.
When we consider the natural opposition between Virgo and Pisces, we might look at it as an opposition of service. Virgo efficiently serves humanity, as our mutable earth sign, Virgo, undertakes much of the mechanical and technical work necessary to improve things. On the other hand, Pisces spiritually serves humanity, as the last sign of the horoscope; it is the sign of the ascended human, the mystic. Virgo understands that we must all work together to create a better world; Pisces understands that we must all recognize our shared experience and oneness to create a better world. These two are the access points, part of the turning of the wheel between the seasons from Summer (Virgo) into Fall (Libra) and Winter (Pisces) into Spring (Aries).
This is especially important as our solar eclipse will fall at 29° Virgo - one of the most critical degrees of the year! 29° Pisces is the last degree of the horoscope, and many of our planets have crossed over it and into 00° Aries, the first degree, this year. The Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Neptune have all done so! I've written about this in detail here, so I won't repeat myself.
What's worth noting about this is that on 9/1, Saturn moved in retrograde from Aries back into 29° Pisces, where it will be sitting during this eclipse, in exact opposition to our Sun and Moon. This places extra emphasis on the solar eclipse and the end of our eclipse cycles, as well as on Saturn sitting in the last degree of the horoscope. Both are signs of "endings" with an emphasis on the liminality that occurs after the ending and before the beginning that inevitably follows.
Those who struggle with uncertainty will likely be highly sensitive to this lunar cycle. Those who revel in the in-between may find it especially powerful. We can see eclipse season as a boulder rolling down hill: it can take a bit to get started, but once it's in full motion, you are either going to get hit with it, or, if you're lucky and it's not about you, you might be able to step out of the way. You can ride the energy and let it take you, but there's very little chance you'll be able to direct or control its trajectory. Some people like it that way.
During this eclipse season, the Sun, Mercury, and Venus will all be passing through Virgo, which means that they each will conjunct the South Node at 18° Virgo and oppose retrograde Saturn in Pisces. Each of these aspects would be notable on its own and is heavily enhanced by the eclipse window. If you need to get rid of something or shed some extra metaphorical weight, use the dates that activate the South Node, but avoid working with the oppositions to Saturn unless you have a strong understanding of Saturnian magic.
This is an opportunity for some cosmic rearranging and alignment, but not the kind you can force into your own preconceived notion of what the future should look like. The secret to eclipse season, like many other astrological transits, is to work with the energy rather than fighting against it.

Peace & Tranquility Candle Spell
My life has been in absolute fucking turmoil lately, so I busted out the ol' spell supplies and crafted a super simple, reliable candle spell.
Materials:
Blue candle (or candle in a "calming" color) & something to light it with
Salt
Chamomile (tip: if you can't find loose chamomile at your local grocery store, cutting open chamomile tea bags works just as well)
Lavender
Bay leaf and a marker or pen
Optional: a tool to carve your candle
Instructions:
Pour salt into a mound on a heat-safe tray or dish. Flatten the mound by shaking the tray/dish around a bit. You want a solid circle of salt.
Taking your finger, make a crossroads or X in the salt.
Pour chamomile and lavender into the X - representing "making way" for peace and tranquility in your life.
Optional: You may carve your candle with calming sigils or runes, if you wish, and annoint it with anti-anxiety/calming oil as well.
Place your candle in the center of your salt.
Light your candle, and feel peaceful waves wash over you. Focus on the intention of carving a path for yourself to feel at peace.
You may now write an intention on your bay leaf. It could be something like "I find time to relax", "Peace will make its way to me", etc. Anything will work!
Carefully burn your bay leaf in the candle of your flame. I personally like to use a pair of tongs/tweezers to hold the bay leaf above the candle so I don't burn myself.
Allow the candle to burn out, and feel the stress wash away from your body.

Transmutation Warding: Feeding Off The Haters
• Welcome Back, Seekers! Within my local coven, we’ve turned our focus to warding and protection magick as we prepare for the year ahead. I adore transmutation magick for warding! It’s one of my favorite ways to craft shields for myself, my work, my growth, and my success. Instead of constantly bracing for every hex, evil eye, or ill wish, this approach flips the narrative. Transmutation wards work proactively, taking any negativity sent your way and alchemizing it into fuel for your growth and power. Why waste energy defending against haters or uncovering their identities when you can let their spite feed your fire? Let them send their malice—it’ll only make you more powerful.
As always, take what resonates with your spirit and weave it into your own unique magick! My spells and workings are here to spark your creativity and inspire your craft. ✨
--------
Tools & Ingredients:
1 black candle (to absorb negativity)
1 purple candle (for transmutation and spiritual power)
Thread or Cord (any color)
A mirror (to summon your Fetch Spirit or reflect your essence)
1 clear quartz crystal or any charm you’re called to that can be left on your altar or within your space - As a subtle sentinel of the ward’s power, clear quartz is a cherished ally in magick. Its ability to be easily programmed makes it a perfect vessel for your intention, while its amplifying nature ensures the energy of your working radiates far and wide. To the untrained eye, it appears as nothing more than a beautiful crystal resting upon your altar or within your sacred space—a discreet guardian cloaked in plain sight, silently weaving its protective spell.
Optional: Chalk or something to draw a circle (for creating a sacred boundary to hold the enchantment of your crystal or charm. If chalk is unavailable, let your finger become the wand. You can also use salt or any symbols you would like to use to draw out a circle.
--------
Preparation:
Cleanse your workspace and tools with smoke, salt water, or another method of your choosing.
Candle preparation, take your black candle and anoint it with a neutral oil, something simple like canola oil—or any oil you feel connected to for protection. Once it’s dressed in oil, sprinkle it with herbs known for protection, such as basil, bay, black pepper, cinnamon, or clove—or any protection herbs that resonate with your magick. For the purple candle, I like to use a neutral oil as well, then dress it with herbs that are perfect for transmutation, like lady’s mantle and yucca. Along with those, I often add a pinch of herbs that represent success and abundance—and don’t forget to include a bit of your hair, fingernail clippings, or something from your person to taglock the magick, connecting the work directly to your energy. Then bind the candles together with some thread or cord.
Binding the Candles:
Take the black and purple candles and begin winding the thread around them, chanting this, or create your own:
"I bind these flames, black and purple entwined,
Protection and transmutation, powers combined.
Through thread and flame, my will takes hold,
To guard my essence, fierce and bold."
You don't have to go all out like I did with those massive candles. Honestly, a couple of chime candles will do the trick if you're short on time.
3. Place your mirror above the center of your altar or working space, positioning it to reflect either yourself or the flickering flames of your candles (refer to the caption below the next picture for more context). Let it serve as a portal, amplifying the energy of your work. Arrange your candles in a fire-safe dish at the center—I often favor a trusty aluminum pie pan for this purpose.
4. Hold your crystal or charm in your hands, letting your energy flow into it. Visualize your purpose, your will, and your desire imprinting itself upon the object. Once your intention feels vibrant and alive within the crystal or charm, move it in a clockwise circle around the candles, envisioning it connecting to the fiery energy of your working—like a thread weaving them together.
5. When the circuit feels complete, place the charged crystal or charm before the candles. Now, cast a circle around the entire space, sealing in the energy. You can do this energetically, feeling the boundary forming with your will, or use chalk, salt, or symbols drawn ahead of time to anchor the space. This sacred boundary holds the power of your work, ensuring that your charm becomes fully and beautifully enchanted. And now, it's time to spark the flame on them candles.
I used a selenite tower in this picture as a stand-in to show where your crystal or charm should be placed. This isn’t the actual charm I used, but it gives you an idea of the setup. You’ll also notice my altar mirror hanging just above the space, perfectly positioned for the energy work. If hanging a mirror isn’t an option for you, no worries—simply place one in front of your working area instead. The reflection is what matters most!
--------
Casting The Ward:
Lighting the Candles:
With the bound candles before the mirror. Light them, starting with the black candle, then the purple, and then chant this, or create your own:
"Black flame of shadow, guard and protect,
Purple flame of spirit, energy redirect.
Before this mirror, realms align,
My (Fetch Spirit/Reflection) carries this spell through time."
Incantation of The Ward:
Face the mirror and focus on your reflection, summoning your Fetch Spirit or the reflection of your empowered self. Chant this incantation, or create your own:
"Anyone who cannot honor my essence,
Respect my growth, or stand in my presence,
Be it through disdain, envy, or intent,
Their fate is sealed, their malice spent.
Their energy flows to me, transformed,
Into strength, abundance, success reborn.
As I feed upon their misguided spite,
They are drained by their own blight.
Across all realms, my shield is spun,
Now and forever, this spell is done."
Seal the Energy:
Visualize the mirror reflecting the power of your spell into the cosmos, spreading the ward across all realms. Allow the candles to burn fully if possible, or snuff them out respectfully.
I love this picture! The flames intertwine perfectly, mirroring the energy I was aiming for in this ward of protective transmutation.
--------
Aftercare:
Charging your crystal or charm: Leave your charm on your altar or in your space as a representation of the ward. Each full moon, place it under the moonlight to recharge its energy, visualizing the ward growing stronger with every cycle.
Mirror Care: Cleanse the mirror after the spellwork with smoke or moon water to ensure it remains a neutral tool for future workings.
Final Words:
Maintain your crystal or charm as a talisman of your protective transmutation ward and remember that this ward will work continuously as long as you charge it and feed it with belief and intention.

War Water
War Water (also called Iron Water) is a powerful tool in witchcraft used for protection, hexing, banishing, and warding off enemies. It originates from Hoodoo, Appalachian folk magic, and other mystical traditions.
Uses of War Water:
• Protection – Sprinkle around your home to create a spiritual barrier.
• Banishing – Throw it where unwanted people have walked to remove their influence.
• Cursing – Toss onto an enemy’s property to bring discord and bad luck.
• Warding Off Negativity – Add to floor washes or sprinkle near entrances.
• In Spellwork - Use in rituals for breaking curses, creating wards, or calling upon warrior spirits.
Needed:
• Rusty nails (or iron shavings or railroad spikes)
• Water (preferably storm or river water for extra potency)
• Salt (black salt for cursing, sea salt for protection)
• Cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes (for aggression and strength)
• Vinegar – Used to sour relationships in cursing spells.
• Mugwort or Rue – For added spiritual power.
Instructions:
Place the rusty nails or iron in a jar. If your nails aren’t rusty, leave them in water for a few weeks to oxidize. Fill the jar with water. Use stormwater for aggressive energy, river water for powerful flow, or tap water if necessary. Add salt and herbs and let it sit for at least a week. The longer it sits, the stronger it becomes. Some witches let it develop for months. Shake or stir when using, the rust, herbs, and salt should be well mixed before application.
Simple Ward Against Spirits (and Other Varieties)
Forbidden peanut butter cookies
I've been very much enjoying working with a new style of ward. It's pertinent materia magica blended into air-dry clay, worked into small disks stamped with protective symbols, and hung up near doors and windows (or carried).
Sometimes I paint them; this time I just filled in the symbols with India ink.
The recipe is quite nice as you can make several little wards for the effort of one spell. And they work up pretty quickly.
The recipe:
3 substances aligning with intent (sets given below)
A small handful of air-dry clay
Paint or ink to decorate, as desired
Thread or cord to hang up, if desired
Clear-dry glue (modge-podge used in picture) to seal clay, especially helpful to block strong-smelling herbs
Steps:
Work over each substance individually to ensure they are carriers of power. Ensure each substance is empowered and aligned with its duties before moving on.
Blend all three substances into some air-dry clay (the clay itself is not worked with as a correspondence, but could be, if you're into it).
Divide the air-dry clay into individual balls and flatten them out into disks. You may have to add plenty of extra water to counteract the dehydrating effect of salt or herbs.
Poke a hole at the top of each disk (I used the back end of a matchstick) if you want to hang them up.
On one side of the disk, carve or paint any protective symbol pertinent to your faith. Pictured, an equilateral cross.
On the other side of the disk, carve or paint a symbol that expresses the specific sort of protection you're working (such as a very simplified sigil, or perhaps elemental or planetary signs you're calling on, or a minimalist animal, and so forth).
Once the clay is dry, coat with a clear layer of glue or modge-podge. This helps protect against moisture and minor chips but primarily is to stop the charm from having a strong odor if you use, say, garlic and dill.
Combinations of Materia:
Use perhaps an eighth of a teaspoon of each to start with; I find the clay can hold a lot of foreign materials, but expect it to significantly change texture and dry out. Of course, use any materials you prefer.
Use only dried herbs. Fresh will not do.
Against Evil
Dill (to perceive, forewarn, and shelter against against evil)
Garlic (to protect against evil)
Salt (to neutralize evil)
Against Unwanted Spirits
Garlic (to protect against the uninvited)
Red pepper (to set boundaries against the uninvited)
Basil (to guard against transgressors)
Against Unwanted Energies
Rosemary (to shield and shelter)
Clove (to create a barrier that limits energies)
Salt (to neutralize unwanted energies)
Notes:
The spell can "end" at any number of moments; you can seal it once you mark symbols, or only after it's dried and painted, or only after you've done knot magic to weave a special hanger, etc.
IME, a very powerful set of wards can be made by linking 4 such disks, each one to a different element, and hanging them in the cardinal directions as your path specifies; thus assigning an elemental guardian working in tandem with his brothers to guard those roads of egress. Try making a base formula shared between all four disks, and then adding a unique ingredient to each one of them that corresponds with the element.
Air-dry clay is fragile. These wards are not especially suited to be carried around, but can be carried in a pinch. If you like, the idea of a ward breaking when it's done it's job is very applicable to brittle clay disks.
You can work greater magic into them; knot magic for the hanger, earth magic for the clay, layering on more power if you paint, and so forth.
21 Advanced Techniques for Reading Tarot Accurately
Some of my YouTube subscribers comment on how my readings are always to the point. How I never need to pause before interpreting a spread or a card. Maybe it's the two decades of reading. Maybe it runs in the family. Maybe I peek at the cards and rehearse before I start recording. (LOL Who has the time?) Or maybe it's just because I know all these techniques by heart. Hope they help you too.

✖ spell & curse breaking ✖
methods for negating spells you have cast:
destroy the physical representation of the spell i.e. if your spell was contained within a jar, break the jar and dispose of the pieces
disassemble the spell and cleanse each component individually
place item in a bath of sea salt and dried herbs that are associated with cleansing and banishing - leave overnight and disassemble the spell when finished
cleanse the item with moon or rain water and disassemble if applicable
place the item in a black box to negate its effects
bury the item for 3 days, retrieve it, then dispose of it
bury the item on the night of the full moon and retrieve it at the next new moon
create a sigil or written incantation with the intent of breaking the spell and place the item on top of the paper - leave in place overnight
create a written incantation that includes the details of the spell - bury, burn, drown, rip apart, or throw it away
light a black candle that is surrounded by sea salt while focusing on the intent of negating the spell - recite an incantation if you wish, and allow the candle to burn down; sweep the sea salt out your back door
breaking spells others have cast upon you and protecting yourself:
perform a “return to sender” spell - find a black taper candle; turn it upside down; cut the tip off and leave the wick in place; carve “return to sender” and the target’s name (or a description of them) into the candle; light the candle upside down and let it burn down completely
leave a witch bottle outside of your home - it should contain items like: pins, needles, broken glass (to shred their negative intentions towards you); your name and the names of those who may be affected by this negative energy plus an incantation for protection (e.g. your loved ones, pets, anyone who lives in your home); and lemon juice, lime juice, or sea salt (to purify their negative energy so that it may not get to you)
create a mixture of charcoal, chili powder, and garlic powder - sprinkle around the perimeter of your home to stop a spell in its tracks
alternately, you may combine these ingredients, add to a hollow pendant, and wear on your person to protect you from the effects of a spell
if you know the details of the spell that has been placed on you, write them down on paper; while focusing on breaking the spell, hold the paper in your hand, and then rip it to shreds; throw the pieces in the trash, or bury in your backyard
if you don’t know the exact details, write down the effects you have been feeling if you think they have been caused by a spell or malintent directed at you; follow the steps above
submerge yourself in a bath of sea salt and light frankincense incense - place the incense on the edge of the tub or somewhere safe in your bathroom - to cleanse yourself of any negative energy that has been directed at you
place an energetic shield over yourself or your home that is designed to negate negative energy
tips:
close all loopholes
when crafting a spell, remember to create a fail safe (e.g. “this spell will be broken if X occurs”)
add timed conditions to your spells (e.g. “this spell will be broken on the night of the next full moon” and include a specific date)
be specific when describing the target that will be affected by the spell (whether it’s you or someone else, be sure to include taglocks whether it be their name written or spoken aloud, DNA such as hair, fingernail clippings, etc., or a photo of the target)
use ingredients, supplies, and tools that match your intent
employ a method of protection before casting spells, whether the intent is malefic or not
cleanse your space and tools before and after performing a spell to “wipe the slate clean”
