The Monkey King Vali’s Funeral Pyre - Illustration by an unknown artist from a 1780 edition of the Ramayana.
This painting contains several vignettes; at the center (2nd photo) is the pyre of Vali, murdered by his brother Sugriva with the help of Rama. To the right of the pyre a group of Vali’s widows stand mourning (3rd photo). At the upper left (4th photo) Sugriva and his retainers approach Rama in his cave to reaffirm his installation as monkey king and, at center right (5th photo), Sugriva, Hanuman, Lakshmana and Sugriva’s army return to the golden capital for Sugriva’s coronation.
I’m in a two-person show with Chelsea Mosher opening Jan 2 at Pehrspace called Southland. It will be up until February 1. Come to the opening on the 2nd and say hi, 7-10pm (at pehrspace)
