Yooo! Let’s Gooo! Prologue/Task 1/

Having migrated to the drinks table in order to stay away from the centre of the party, Chouko was surprised to see another girl flounce over without a care in the world. 

‘Yumiko Sone, SHSL Digital Artist, right!’

Her fingers curled into the hem of her dungaree shorts as she bowed in introduction, braids flipping over her shoulders, causing her to cringe when they almost slapped the Sone’s soda.

“A-Ah, C-Chouko Akaishi, Super High School Level Chindōgu Inventor – the pleasure is yours- mine! Erm, nothing much and it’s nice too meet you too!”

Clearly still buzzed with nerves from being on stage, Chouko flushed and gave a shaky smile. The disco atmosphere was not one she was used to and she knew she looked out of place; heck, she felt it too!

“So, ah, text speak?”

 Yumiko had been sipping on her drink until a girl approached her. She seemed to have already have heard of Yumiko the way she said her name.  Maybe a potential alliance member for the future. She didn’t seem very capable, but an extra number on your side is always great. Before introducing herself, she bowed having her braids fly at her drink. Yumiko let out a chuckle and smiled at the girl.

“Yes I am Yumiko, nice to meet ya Akaishi-chan. Yeah the text over there on the screen is somewhat like speaking. You play a song and you sing along to it. It is called Karaoke! You should totally try it out, impress me.

‘Oh, no, she laughed!’

Embarrassed, Chouko stared at her feet, not knowing that she had spoken her thoughts aloud again -- it was a bad habit that had a tendency to show when she was nervous. Yumiko was a pretty girl and Chouko found that intimidating; what would the artist think of her? Still, the pink-haired SHSL was friendly enough so she couldn’t be a bad person, right?

“I-I’m really not a good singer, but I’m sure you’d be great at karaoke, Sone-san!”

Was she being too formal? The inventor corrected herself with an-

“Er, Sone-chan” 

-and smiled awkwardly. Social interaction was never her strong suit.

Prologue Task 1 Open: Play the Rocking Music

“Ouch!”

Grabbing at where the musician’s elbow had rammed into her ribs, Chouko reflexively stepped away from the source of pain with a small frown. She watched as the blonde scrolled through the karaoke machine, confused for a brief period before she took note of the horns taped to the girl’s forehead – she was that rocker, Satoru something!

‘Matsuri likes her music,’

Chouko recalled

‘I wonder…’

The megane began to fidget with her fingers, poking at the pocket where she’d stored a notepad and pencil. As an inventor it was always handy to keep craft materials on hand, but since she was so close to a celebrity she recognised, Chouko knew she could easily sacrifice one of the pages for an autograph.

…If she worked up the courage to ask for one, that is.

Satoru still had no clue Chouko was behind her and thus she just kept searching through all the songs, unable to find anything good. When she was unable to find a song that she deemed good, she turned around and was greeted by the sight of Chouko.

What the fuck are you looking at?

Chouko yelped and pressed her hands against the side of her thighs, rapidly shaking her head left and right.

“N-Nothing, ma’am; thank you, ma’am!”

And with that she scurried away, feeling humiliated. 

‘I’m sorry, Matsuri, but I just can’t do it...’

Cringing, Chouko strode across to room to duck behind a game machine of some kind, noticing the nearby row of doors. A quick glance confirmed them as the bedrooms that she and her fellow guests would be staying in, and —she almost couldn’t believe her luck— she saw that her room was right next to Satoru’s.

She whimpered.

Prologue Task 1 Open: Play the Rocking Music

Honestly, Satoru couldn’t remember why for the life of her she decided to audition for this game show. She wasn’t a huge fan of them, and yet she still did it and now…her she was, with 15 others on the show, hosted by some stupid looking bear.

She was the last person to enter the manor that everyone was appearance going to stay in and she was quickly greeted by the sight of a karaoke machine and other party stuff. A smile grew on Satoru’s face as she saw the karaoke machine.

Sweet, time to show these chumps a good time.

Satoru quickly rushed over to the machine, shoving anyone in her path out of her way as she headed to the machine. Soon the girl reached the machine and began flipping through the songs, unaware that behind her was one of the people she had just pushed over moments before.

  Bright lights and cameras everywhere, Yumiko knew this was her time to shine. She sat next to 15 other kids who she had never met before. She had seen a couple around, but not many. This two toned bear was our host. How did this thing even work? The reality of reality television huh! The audience cheered as the bear announced we could enter the house. I stood up and casually walked into the house trying to keep my cool.

   Once inside Yumiko did a little excited jump and went to introduce herself to someone, but before she could loud music started playing. Woah! A party! She always loved to party, so this is right up her alley. Once Yumiko saw the drinks on the counter, she ran to them, but when she realized that this was on television and they couldn’t supply teenagers with alcohol, she just grabbed soda.

  She sat up onto one of the stools and watched as some people danced and some sat in the corners. Yumiko noticed someone standing close enough so that they might actually hear her over the music.

 “Yooo! What’s up! I am Yumiko Sone SHSL Digital artist nice to meet ya. I still can’t believe I am here. Hype af right!”

“EEP!”

The crash of Seiji’s face against the table is shortly followed by the thud of someone else’s head smacking into the headrest of a chair when a startled Chouko bolts up from her slumber. Gripping her skull with two hands, the dark-haired girl clamps her teeth onto her lower lip to prevent louder noises, but tears are already stinging at her eyes as a result of the pain.

‘AHH, how long have I been out of it for? Where’d Aiko go? Is that boy okay?!’

Chouko’s frantic thought process gives her an air of mild mania, sleepy eyes somewhat wild with concern because she has no clue what’s going on. The young inventor opens her mouth to voice concern for the Libero, but the bump on her cranium must have caused it to get lost along the way because instead of “Are you all right?”, what comes out is-

“Am I fine?”

Groggily, the boy lifts his head, looking at Chouko as she slams herself into the chair. He sits up frantically. “OHHH!!!” He yells, covering his mouth, realizing his mistake yet again. He grits his teeth, glancing around even more frantically.

“I don’t…. umm!! Really know?? Are you?? Did that hurt??? I hope it didn’t I’m sorry!! Really sorry, um!!!” He whispers.

Forgetting his whole bunny act, he stands up in one quick motion. “Do you need an ice pack? Um!! I can go grab one really quick! Only if you want though!! I’m really sorry, um, sorry!!” Chill.

The clashing franticness was almost comical.

“Wait, no, that’s not what I meant but I’m not sure! Please don’t apologise!! And I don’t think I need one, but thank you -- and, oh gosh, I should probably get you one!”

Tear marks streak down Chouko’s face, but they’re more from disorientation than anything; the bump on her scalp has already dulled, but a small headache is beginning to form in its place.

“I’m so sorry!”

The hushed babbling began to trail off into a quieter tone when the ravenette realised she was drawing too much attention from the librarian and other visitors. Hiding her face in her hands out of shame, she rose and hurriedly packed up her possessions.

“Do you need an ice pack, sir?”

Today Mimi-chan and Seiji are having a fun time at the library. Inside the library, one might find themselves faced with the sight of a boy reading a book at a table peacefully, while holding a bunny who he’s shaking around ridiculously with his free hand. He scowls at the bunny as he does so.

“Mimi-chan!! Shush!!! Do you want us to get kicked out? It’s a library, and I’m trying to read also, so!!! Just stop–” The boy shakes the bunny around more. He lets out a yelp, covering his mouth in surprise for a moment knowing that he shouldn’t be this loud in the library. “Mimi-chaaaan….” He whispers softly to the bunny. More bunny shaking. “Mimi-chan!!” He says in a louder whisper.

He continues to shake the stuffed toy rowdily, until one of the bunny arms hits him square in the face, prompting an “AAAAAAAAA!!!” yelled in response, and throwing his face into the table he’s sitting at. Everyone in the library can’t help but stare at the sight.

I know a couple of you are running pre-despair threads, so whilst I won’t be creating any of my own, I’ll likely respond to an Open before the group canon starts up. What is, the official roster?

Hello, everyone! Although we haven’t yet finished the icons we will be providing for these 16 characters, we can only make you wait so long to see who made the cut.

We’ve said it a few times in the hopefuls chat, but we mods really did have a hard time cutting out so many good apps! If you didn’t make it, it doesn’t mean anything is really wrong with you or your character—sometimes we just need to balance out different personalities and things like that for a better roleplaying experience. I’m sure you can all find a group that’s right for your characters!

Thank you all for applying to Game Show Despair! It was great to meet all of your characters, and we’re looking forward to the roleplaying to come!
