I’m not crying, I’m fine… I’m fi… *starts to cry disconsolately*
I Just Realized what the ‘I’m Sorry’ is For
Peter’s last words (as we all know pretty darn well by now) are ‘I’m sorry.’
But what’s he sorry for? Sorry for tagging along to space? Sorry he couldn’t pull the gauntlet off? Sorry to show weakness in front of his mentor?
Nope.
Back in Homecoming, Tony specifically says “if you died… I feel like that’s on me.”
Peter replies with “I understand.” because of COURSE he does. This boy is living with the guilt of his uncle’s death, which he thinks is his fault. He would understand better than most what it feels like to live with the guilt of someone’s death.
The ‘I’m sorry’ is his last apology to Tony. He KNOWS that Tony will blame himself for his death, always, and knows that nothing he says in his final moments will prevent that.
He’s sorry to put the amount of grief he’s lived with since he became Spider-Man onto Tony because he knows how it feels, to think that if only for you, that person would still be alive.
So… yeah. I’m just gonna… leave this here…
