getting inked
"don't be like the rest of them darling"
It is the first morning of our vacation. I wake up bright and early and trot down to the ocean where I make a shocking and bone-chilling discovery: I am the only personage on the beach whose epidermis is unadorned with tattoos. Everyone is inked up except moi. According to...
Tattoos are seen as a sign of individuality, of uniqueness and holds meaning to the individual. Well at least they used to be. Getting inked has become so common, a lingering trend that now makes you the same as others rather than separate.
Another form of communicating messages are billboards and neon signs. We looked at the works of Jenny Holzer and Simon Tyszko. We included this is one of our pages to highlight how the media bombard us and force us to conform to the ideals and trends of the time.
#74 World's Most Valuable Brand according to Forbe's (November 2013)
Chanel is one of the world's most powerful fashion houses, with its creative direction currently led by Karl Lagerfield. We wanted to create an image that emphasises the power brands like Chanel have on trends. The logo itself has so much power and could be placed on anything and it would be considered fashion.Ā

Trend: Hashtags
So I learnt that people hate it when other people use hashtags on Facebook. It makes sense because they are useless on Facebook but I didn't expect so much hate!Ā
We thought it would be important to not just choose specific trend but visualize some contextual ideas too.
I have used the kaleidoscope to take photos of books on some of fashions most elitist designers. These include Chanel, Chloe, Dior, Bvlgari, Balenciaga and Tiffany & Co.
We want to use these images layered on top of each other to make a statement that the value of these brands are weakening due to mass production. These fashion houses are usually the directors of trends then once it hits the high street, the trend is everywhere.

Freud wrote an essay about the herd instinct.
"The individual feels āincompleteā if he is alone."
Below are two thought-provoking, stand-on-their-own sections from Patrick Spreadās paper āScience and Support: The Struggle for Mastery in Economicsā in the new issue of RWER.Ā The herd instinct Fuā¦
"People all go in one direction with the one idea. The group members convince each other that the idea is the answer they have all been looking for. Then some event occurs that casts doubt on the idea. A rival individual puts forward an alternative idea, and gains support. People begin to move away from the first idea and edge towards the second. At a certain point, the erosion of support erodes the confidence of the old group, and a trickle of defections becomes a torrent. The new group gains confidence from the build-up of its support. The new group, with the new idea, becomes ascendant. People move with the herd because it gives a sense of security, whatever the status of the herd ideas."
This is true for trends that come in and out of fashion in society. This is how it works. This is the herd instinct.
Both young adults and teens are constantly exposed to the media. It is near impossible to get away...
It's a shame there are only a couple of posts in this forum, but I still found it interesting to read other people's opinions on the impact of the media on individuals.Ā
"Hollywood determines, to an extent, what we wear, how we talk, what our interests are. Although we may not realize it, our fashion adapts to what is popular and what is popular is usually what is on tv. "
I have reblogged one of my first posts for assessment 1 which has a few points about Post-Modernism and Jean Baudrillard's theory. Parts of it are very relevant when looking at the power and control of the media and how that effects us. BaudrillardĀ āsawĀ globalization and technological developmentĀ producing standardization and virtualization that wasĀ erasing individuality". Also the Post-Modern idea thatĀ popular culture signs and media images dominate our sense of reality.
