Sam remembered exactly the time Chloe was talking about. It had been one of those unbearably hot summers where anything touching you immediately made you sweaty and sticky. “Of course, I do! I also remember telling you that’s exactly what was going to happen.” Regardless of her words, Sam still laughed. “That was a good summer.”

“And I didn’t listen, like always.” Her smile turned melancholy. “Sam, do you think... will everything be the same after we go to college?” The meaning behind her words was, Do you think we’ll still be friends?, but she was too afraid to voice it, even to her best friend.

Ziggy sighed, leaning forward with her elbows on top of the ice cream case. “Yeah, it’s fine. I’m still pissed at the lady who was in here before you. You should’ve seen her- she had like six kids and no control over any of them.”

“Ew. Gross.” Chloe wrinkled up her nose. She liked little kids, but she didn’t like the screaming, or the diapers, or the messy food all over their mouths. She liked kids more in concept than in practice, really.

A genuine smirk graced Sam’s lips for the first time that day. “I know. That’s why it’s funny.” Bumping Chloe’s shoulder back, Sam chuckled. “Seriously, though, you’ll live. I’m sure your feet have endured worse, yeah?”

“Oh my God, do you remember the time the bottoms of my feet got burned?” Chloe laughed, reminiscing. It had been at some beach--she couldn’t remember where, but she could remember how much it hurt the soles of her feet to walk afterwards.

Even at eleven o’clock in the morning, Chloe was still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. It was extremely hard for her to go to sleep early under normal circumstances, much less when she had a party to attend and people to talk to. It had been a few days, but her head still ached a little, even more when she thought about how loud that place had been. She hoped that she hadn’t done anything particularly stupid. But, of course, she would know about it by now, whether through friends or social media. Now, thank God, the school day was over and she could go home. Or, at least, after the person blocking the doorway to freedom got out of her way.

She tapped them lightly on the shoulder. “Um, excuse me? Could you move? I have to get through.” She smiled to indicate that she meant no harm.

Old Friend | Chloe & Cal

Maybe it was because it had just finished raining--a cool, refreshing summer rain that broke through the humid atmosphere and brought a few hours of relief from the oppressive heat. Maybe it was because, as it did at the beginning of every school year, buying her back to school supplies reminded of her of her very first time purchasing them in the United States. Maybe it was because she was just a little too soaked in nostalgia and a little too stressed about college applications. Maybe it was because the death of Emily Burke was still lingering in the back of her mind. Maybe it was a combination of factors, both seen and unseen, recognized and hidden, all bubbling under the surface and all culminating in Chloe’s decision to text Cal at 12:41 PM.

It had been a while since they had had time together, just the two of them. Over the summer, Chloe had been busy with ballet practice and performances, and her family’s trip to Disneyworld, and presumably Cal had his work at the supermarket to occupy his time, among other things. As they had grown older, they had grown a little apart, and Chloe regretted it. He was basically her older brother, another piece to the confusing puzzle that was her family.

She flipped through the latest copy of Vogue while she waited for him to answer. He was usually up late--did he stay up late anymore? She didn’t know off the top of her head, and that was scary. There had been a time when they knew each other so closely that they could have been mistaken for telepathic. But those days had passed, vanished into air like mist in the morning sun.

“Saaaaaaam, I’m serious!” Chloe drew out the vowel of her friend’s name for longer than was necessary, then bumped her playfully on the shoulder.

“They’re supposed to help scrub dead skin off of your feet--ew, by the way--but I’m practically bleeding, look!” In reality, the bottoms of her feet were not nearly as bad as she had made them seem.
