couple of logh fansub translation decisions i wanted to comment on:
1) in the interaction between yang and jessica after she's attacked by the patriotic knights' corps for speaking up against trunicht, jessica calls herself an iya na onna (嫌な女), or a "bad/unpleasant/disagreeable woman"... but the fansubs just put "bitch" lol.
i do think it's important that this statement is followed up by a discussion about appropriate expressions of grief, particularly where women's conduct is concerned: jessica is directly addressing formulations of womanhood in a heavily militaristic (ww2 japanese) society, in which women were expected to endure and support the sacrifice of their sons/brothers/husbands/friends to war efforts (in trunicht's words, "we absolutely must not lose to grief/sadness"). note that trunicht intends to praise jessica when she tells him that she doesn't need consolation for her loss — he calls her a mirror (kagami, 鏡) for women on the homefront (fansubs use the word "model") — and how this description of jessica-as-mirror/model is turned on its head by jessica's protest.
2) in the episode where the rosen ritter infiltrate iserlohn, the line below is mistranslated, so the subsequent exchange doesn't fully make sense:
"around the fallen fortress, there was no enemy left" runs counter to everything we know about the situation. rather, kasper says "yousai wa otoshita ga, mawari wa teki shika nokotte inakatta" (要塞は落としたが周りは敵しか残っていなかった). i think the fansubber must have missed "shika," which changes the meaning from "nothing left" to "nothing left but..." anyway the above roughly translates to something like "we felled the fortress, but all around nothing but enemies remained/we're surrounded by nothing but enemies." so the full exchange becomes this:
kasper: but everything's okay outside, right? if "we felled the fortress, but we're surrounded by nothing but enemies"... that would be pretty bad.
(no clue how else to translate the "nante wa gomen desu yo" that kasper tacks on at the end — nante refers to the scenario that he just presented, and gomen desu yo is, colloquially, like a yikes i am not doing that.)
walter: i won't word-by-word translate his reply but he says something to the effect of "attacks in the fortress are blocked off. if it's just the station fleet, even if they're two times the size of our forces, yang wenli will figure out something somehow."
kasper is intended to parallel murai in the prior scene, where murai questions the ability of the rosen ritters to accomplish their task + the rosen ritters' loyalty. when kasper questions the ability of the thirteenth fleet to control the situation outside the fortress, walter professes his trust in yang just as yang professes his trust in walter.
