OKAY this is sorta pre relationship BUT the idea of link teasing nico about how his thing for levi, like bringing it up in surgery and to patients and basically all the time?? it’s my my lifeblood.

“Hello, Mrs. Colleen. I’m Dr. Lincoln, but you can just call me Link.”

Mrs. Colleen is a small lady in her early 70s and had come in after taking a fall in the tub. Link’s pulling out all his charms on for Mrs. Colleen and she’s practically losing years off her age with how she’s gushing up at the seasoned Ortho surgeon like a young school girl.

Nico shakes his head and unintentionally lets out a snort. That’s when Mrs. Colleen notices him and claps her hands together with glee.

“Oh, isn’t it my lucky day!” she exclaims. “You know, my grand baby, Tiana, oh she’s a pretty one! She would love you, Dr…?”

“Kim,” Nico replies with a polite smile.

“Dr. Kim, oh!” She holds out her small hands for him to hold and he hesitates for a second but with a look from Link, Nico tucks his tablet under his arm and lets Mrs. Colleen’s grab his. “You are quite the handsome one, aren’t you? Tiana May is her full name. She just graduated from Howard this spring. Something do with housing or whatsit. I can’t quite remember actually. You’ll have to ask her.”

She continues to go on despite Nico’s obvious discomfort. If Mrs. Colleen had a broken hip or femur, you wouldn’t know it with how wide she was smiling and laughing. There’s a mischievous glint in her eye that makes Nico uneasy but his hands, his precious surgeon hands, are being held with an iron fist. He pleads with his eyes with Link for help but Link is useless. He’s in the corner, stifling a laugh behind his hands.

Nico fakes a smile and nods, tugging just a little but his hands are a goner, forever in the strong grip of an old lady matchmaker. “Tiana sounds very nice, Mrs. Colleen.”

“Oh she is! You know —”

“Mrs. Colleen,” Link interrupts, taking a step out his corner. Finally, Nico thinks. He glares at Link and hopes Link feels those daggers Nico’s throwing his way. Nico somehow manages to snatch his hands back to himself and takes a big step back. “I’m sure Tiana would love my talented colleague here but, Mrs. Colleen, I’m afraid his heart has been captured already by a very, very, veeery special someone.”

“Oh! Oh no!” Mrs. Colleen frowns, almost pouts. Nico has to force his eyes not to roll.

“Dr. Link?” A small voice asks at the door. It’s Schmitt, breathless and glasses askew. “I-I’m sorry I’m late. Dr. Karev switched me into ortho last minute and I — um.” Schmitt stops when he notices Nico. He gives Nico an embarrassed smile.

Nico feels his heart jump into his throat and he doesn’t realize he’s smiling back like a fool until he catches Link’s calculating stare. Nico wipes the smile off his face and clears his throat, clasping his hands together in front of him, recreating his mastered stoic stature again.

Link doesn’t miss a beat though.

“Dr. Schmitt!” Link gestures for Schmitt to come closer. “Mrs. Colleen, this is the very, very, veery special someone.”

Nico realizes the daggers from earlier weren’t enough. He shoots mental fire and sharp, jagged rocks at Link. Fucking Link. Mrs. Colleen puts a hand to her chest and is caught speechless for once.

“I’m the what?” Schmitt looks to Link and then to Nico who jumps in before Link can say another stupid, stupid thing.

“He means you’ll be taking good care of Mrs. Colleen,” Nico says between his teeth. “Right, Link?”

Link looks absolutely like the devil when he winks at Nico. “Yes! Very, very special care. Nico knows all about that.”

Mrs. Colleen seems to have come around finally and looks between Nico and Schmitt before melting back to her usual face of glee. “Ah, I can see why he’s so special. He’s very cute, isn’t he?”

She winks too at Nico while Schmitt turns completely red and Nico absolutely wants both to kill Link and die at the same time.

It was going to be a looong day.

Q&A Malec and marriage

Magnus and Alec would love to get married. They’re committed to the end either way, but the reason they haven’t gotten married yet is because they decided not to until there were equal privileges and rights accorded to Downworlder-Shadowhunter marriages as there are for Shadowhunter marriages. They had this discussion in Born to Endless Night, in Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy:

“Shadowhunters can marry Downworlders,” Magnus said, “in Downworlder or mundane ceremonies. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve seen other Shadowhunters dismiss those marriages as meaning nothing, and I’ve seen some Shadowhunters bow under pressure and break the vows they made. I know you would never bow or break. I know that type of marriage would mean just as much to you. I know that any promises you made me, you would keep. But I was alive before the Accords. I sat and ate and talked with Shadowhunters about peace between our people, and then those same Shadowhunters threw away the plates I ate off because they thought I irredeemably tainted whatever I touched. I will not have a ceremony that anyone looks down on as lesser. I do not want you to have any less than the ceremony you could have had, to honor your vows to a Shadowhunter. I have had enough of making compromises in the name of trying to make peace. I want the Law to change. I do not want to get married until we can get married in gold.”

Alec was quiet, his head bowed.

“Do you understand?” Magnus demanded, feeling almost desperate. “It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s not that I don’t love you.” 

“I understand,” said Alec. He took a deep breath and looked up. “Changing the Law might take a while,” he said simply.

For instance. If Magnus and Alec were to get married, they would likely want to hyphenate their last name to Lightwood-Bane. Part of what it would mean for them to have equal privileges and rights is that their hyphenated name be considered valid by the Clave. Lightwood-Bane isn’t a Shadowhunter name. The Ascended have to pick Shadowhunter names, and there are no Shadowhunters whose names aren’t okayed by the Clave. So this means that the Clave would need to allow Alec to use the hyphenated name in order for it to be considered his official name. (If he used it against their wishes, they wouldn’t kick him out of the Nephilim, but they wouldn’t acknowledge it as a real last name.) It would also mean that Rafe would get to pick if he wanted to be Rafe Lightwood or Rafe Lightwood-Bane, as opposed to having to hew to the standard usage of Shadowhunter last names (which would mean he’d have to go by Lightwood).

An enormous part of Alec’s identity and also Magnus are wrapped up, in different ways, in their fight for equality, in their demands for recognition and not just tolerance, but rights. It’s why they head up the Downworlder-Shadowhunter Alliance and why that’s so important to both of them. In the end, that Alliance — it’s existence, and Alec’s leadership of it — is a huge part of what tips the balance of good and evil, more than any Institute or Conclave could ever do. Part of what make Alec and Magnus so well-suited (and part of what shows how much Alec has grown from a young man who often made snap judgments, and believed prejudices he’d been taught, to a warrior and defender of the marginalized) is that they’re not willing to accept compromises: when they get married, it’ll be in Shadowhunter gold and warlock blue, and it’ll be all the more fantastic and triumphant for that.

CASSIAN & NESTA (SPOILERS)

OK so I have a theory:

Cassian & Nesta are mates.

Ok, if the evidence of their interactions & his instinct to protect her is not enough, how about this:

When Feyre was painting her family’s dresser in their small cottage, she drew a night sky on her drawer, later discovering she’s the Night Court High Lord’s mate.

She drew flowers on Elain, who later is Lucien’s mate. (I bet this will later have a connection)

And she drew flames on Nesta’s drawer.

And Cassian…. has RED siphons, which Feyre constantly compares to flames.

You know what else I loved so much about acomaf?

That it made it okay to need help - need people. 

That it allowed the characters to need others to be at their strongest, that it allowed Feyre to need to hold Rhys’ hand just to get past the trigger of being beneath the soil again in the Prison without her seeming weaker for it. I’m all for strong characters that can hold their own, but I’m even more for the sheer strength of connections between people and how they can lift you to become your best as a group. 

It’s just so nice to read about characters that don’t need to be doing something alone to know that they’re strong. And to know that fighting with the people they love - not hiding them away where they’re ‘safe’ - makes them a million times stronger than if they were alone.

I think it’s very significant that Mor is known as an incredibly honest character, and that she treasures truth above all else, and Azriel’s knife is known as Truth Teller.
