( a little weak, if he’s being honest. he can imagine the unyielding, clinical set of his father’s voice warning him against that kind of weakness. )

It’s something to contemplate, surely, but another day.

It’s true enough; it still catches him by surprise, traveling through the dimensional rifts. Nothing he can’t handle, but something that takes him a few moments to reorient himself. Spacing out might be unfortunate ( and unacceptable ) but also on the unavoidable side. So there’s only a faint hint of embarrassment that colors his otherwise straightforward tone.

He’d recognize her footfalls anywhere -- full of life, sweet, perhaps a little unbalanced on occasion. And he shouldn’t be surprised; it is not the first time that the first familiar face he sees upon arriving back home is hers. So even as he’s caught off guard, his worry is tempered by familiar, deep fondness.
