is it ok for a choir director in school to favor one class over another from the same choir? Like my teacher has two periods for women's choir but she prefers second period because they have more people that aren't first years. it kinda hurts our self esteem so i guess i just answered my own question haha.

everyone has favorites, it just happens, but perhaps it was a bit insensitive of her to say that aloud to you. If it’s something that she brings up a lot, then I would suggest you politely tell her that it upsets you and your mates.

Okay I'm a tenor and for this one song I have to hit f on the treble clef... But the problem is that that's where my break is ... Lol my teacher couldn't help me so she said just don't sing when that part comes around ... Do you have any tips so that I can sound decent and sing that f at the same time?

1. make sure your vocal cords are warmed up and relaxed. 

2. use your diaphragm

I haven't had a teacher that was strictly voice in years but I used to do warm ups all the time. I got sick a while ago though and I think I did a little damage to my voice. Should I just keep resting it/around steam?

I'm a 13 y/o girl, and my voice is the absolute lowest female voice in the choir, reaching lower than some of the tenors. My teacher promised me I could sing tenor for one song, but for everything else I have to sing alto. And in a lot of cases the notes will get too high for me and won't sound good. I'm singing for GMEA All-State as an alto 1 in less than a week. Any tips to help me sing higher notes with better quality?(and please don't say breath, My voice+breath matured faster, so it's fine)

Honestly the answer is breath support :/ you need to be constantly supporting your diaphragm for the best sound, no matter what you’re singing.

at my last competition (homewood) the air conditioner broke during finals and a bunch of the performers onstage passed out due to the heat... it was so wild. they just cut finals and issued results for prelims as final scores. c r a z y

that happened to us a few years ago :( last year when my highschool sang with some elementary schoolers, one of the 1st graders peed on the stage because she was nervous. You can’t plan these things!

@ loud alto anon my choir is the same way?? Our director usually has to ask the altos to quiet down because you can't hear the sopranos??

to be honest mine too :/ but for us it’s just because the sopranos literally don’t even try at all....and we’re chamber choir.

My highschool freshmen choir is doing an A class collegiant level piece! It's a bit tricky, but just under a week and a half later, we can run through the whole thing with minimal mistakes.

oh man, i haven't (and won't) say anything actually to the director/anyone of the other choir members but i really hate one of the pieces we're learning and will probably be performing at a competition but everyone else seems to love it... alas my responsibility is to sing it even so

well if you preform it in a competition you probably won’t have to sing it again! I know what you mean by hating songs that everyone seems to really like, it gets awkward.

I just got more in depth into singing about a month or two ago and I don't want to get a teacher until I'm confident that I have a decent voice. Do you have any tips on how I can improve my voice by myself?

singing teachers will help you improve more than anything :) maybe you can watch warm up videos on YouTube so you can expand your range

I'm afab and in tenor but I think it's too high for me? I might just be delusional about my range but I can do stuff 2/3 of the way down the bass clef (idk specific notes sorry) and anything above a middle c is hard if not impossible. Do I have to improve my upper range or can I try to get better @ singing low so I can move down a section (we don't have a baritone section there's just bass and tenor)

You can talk to your director if you think they know what is best for your voice. If you think it’s too high maybe you should switch to Bass.

Do you guys have any tips to get over larynitis?

1.Talk to your doctor about antibiotics

 2. Use a humidifier! 

3. Vocal rest is honestly one of the most important things you can do! the last thing you want is some damaged vocal cords.

Forgot to add in that last anonymous ask that I'm an alto, I'm sure you could figure that out from the extreme lack of self confidence lmao

So for my choir class every quarter I have to record a video of myself singing in front of the class and send it to my teacher. I get so nervous every time I have to do it that I can't maintain a stable pitch because my voice is so shaky from the nervousness. And because I've failed to do the simplest thing every time I do it I can't help but cry. I feel like such a failure and a let down to my teacher, because I'm a chamber singer, this should be easy for me. I need some advice

First of all, I’m sorry that you're having such bad anxiety ;( I remember I used to be so so nervous about singing in front of my class. It was hard to just get up there and sing, because I was afraid of them (the older kids) thinking I didn't belong there. Somehow I decided to go for it,and it wasn’t my best preference, but I realized that most people are more focused on their performances to notice anyone being shaky. If anything, I think some (not knowing how nervous you are) might wish they were brave too. I promise that no one thinks that you are a failure! I’m sorry this answer is probably a million years late :( let us know how it went!

I feel like my choir is weird bc our altos (including me) are so much louder than our sopranos

that is weird! usually it’s the other way around!
