So, in “A Mothers Reckoning” Sue wrote about how she could tell Dylan was feeling some type of way about something but he wouldn’t tell her, and that she had asked Tom to talk to him about it and he said he would the following day after school, and when he did, Dylan said a group of students have been picking on him. She said:

The fact that Daniel Mausers parents don’t even believe that Eric was an actual pychopath and Eric’s actually parents do, I think says a lot about Eric’s parents tbh.

Wayne most likely assumed it was Eric once the news started reporting about trench coats, since he knew Eric had one. On top of that, the house apparently smelled really bad from the bomb making materials(they had to be evacuated), and Eric’s room was in complete disarray with things left out that he’d previously kept hidden.(Kathy tried to stop investigators from entering before realising Eric had passed away.) He’d also left the Nixon tape on the kitchen counter for his family explaining why he did it. I think there’s too much hindsight bias when it comes to people not believing the parents didn’t realise it would escalate to the extremes that it did.

The whole thing with the mausers is such a silly thing too since they can’t exactly try to justify or defend him to grieving parents who lost their son. It’s very damned if they do, damned if they don’t
