SPIRITED AWAY | 千と千尋の神隠し
2001, dir. Hayao Miyazaki
one summer’s day
“Even amidst the hatred and carnage, life is still worth living. It is possible for wonderful encounters and beautiful things to exist.”
― Hayao Miyazaki
Hey umm can you give me some ghibli recs? 💖
I ABSOLUTELY CAN
spirited away
obviously have to start with my all-time fave because this movie is gorgeous in every sense of the word from start to finish. i am not exaggerating when i say it was the greatest movie ever made. also its anti-capitalist <3
princess mononoke
this movie is INSANE. the scenery is gorgeous, its a love story but thats not the main focus, very much NOT black & white with the definition of good & bad and that nuance makes it so much more enjoyable. plus super badass women which is always a plus. oh & of course ashitaka. loml.
howl’s moving castle
honestly this movie & spirited away are basically the same movie but also not? i think if you watch both you’ll know what i mean. it’s beautiful, makes love seem real, and anti-war!! also dramatic howl + outspoken sophie make quite a pair. definitely read the book too!!!
ponyo
ok if you’re anything like me & you have any form of maternal instincts this movie will make you crazy. the main characters are two five year olds and THEIR CHEEKS!!!!!!! but also it’s about childhood love & it’s the SWEETEST thing ever. bonus points if you can’t stop singing the theme song when you finish.
the tale of princess kaguya
this movie is so special because of the animation style. it looks like a watercolor painting it’s amazing & i’m obsessed with it. it’s also a really sweet story that definitely has a bittersweet ending but totally worth watching
my neighbor totoro
kind of like ponyo in the sense that the main characters are children and it made me slightly crazy. mei looks acts & feels like a 4 year old which is so so important and makes the entire film feel so real. it’s also just a really sweet story.
whisper of the heart
a super underrated ghibli film??? a little coming of age & has some classic teenage drama but it’s super sweet and takes place in the 90s so the fashion is *chefs kiss* country roads most likely will get stuck in your head after but i didn’t mind considering how much i loved this film.
from up on poppy hill
also underrated as fuck. i think it’s overlooked because it’s not miyazaki or takahata (althought technically it is miyazaki it’s just his son lol) it’s basically a love story set after ww2 but the parallels between coming of age & starting afresh through the renovation of the clubhouse…… immaculate. also a fanatastic soundtrack (like the rest of these films lol)
kiki’s delivery service
i think this movie is a “you either love it or hate it” kinda thing but i loved it. it could be counted as fantasy because kiki’s a witch but it’s not over the top & the story is cute. plus jiji & ghibli’s biggest simp tombo lol. not a lot happens but it’s just a feel-good movie all around.
He just wanted some food :(
and maybe a friend
there's a certain feeling to ghibli landscapes.
i feel calm.

Spirited Away (2001) » S K I E S (☆)
to say this scene gave me chills is an understatement. I LOVE THEM.
Will we meet again somewhere? I’m sure of it. Promise? Promise.
