It wasn’t at all unexpected that she and Professor Flitwick kept in touch. He had been a mentor during her time at school— a mentorship that had lasted even after her graduation— and it wasn’t too far off to consider him a guardian figure, especially given the care he often showed her that her own parents weren’t in the habit of giving. He messaged her regularly, asking to know how she was doing, or to seek her professional opinion on the latest discourse surrounding hex vs. jinx wandwork, or to meet her for tea if she’d have the availability in her schedule.
His latest message was one that had given her an unusual meeting place— his office at Hogwarts, of all the cafes and restaurants he could have chosen and usually did choose for their rendezvous. Still, strange as it was, she had accepted the offer, not one to deny herself the chance to return to a place that held seven years’ worth of memories.
And it was at the tail end of her conversation with Flitwick that a sudden slam! interrupted them, startling Cho. She whirled around, fingers itching reflexively for her wand, but the urge to cast a counter-spell of some sort fell away when she spotted a sheepish-looking Harry Potter peering at them from a door that seemed to be the culprit of the sound.
“Heavens, Harry!” Flitwick squeaked, eagerly beckoning him to join them. “I believe you remember Miss— it’s ‘miss’, yes? I haven’t forgotten anything? Ah, yes, I thought so— I believe you remember Miss Chang, hm?”
“Ah— hello, Harry.” She hadn’t kept in contact with Harry, much less seen him, since the end of the Battle, so while Cho did her best to offer a smile that was polite and kind, she admittedly felt somewhat stiff and awkward as she stepped aside to make room for him in the conversation. Flitwick, however, beamed at her and clapped his hands together, oblivious to her minor unease or even the history shared between his former students. Turning his grin to Harry, the older wizard chuckled. “I’d like to be the first to introduce you to our newest Charms professor!”
Something about being in the presence of his former classmates always made him feel more youthful. Whenever Hermione or Ron stopped by the castle for a visit, it almost felt in the back of Harry's mind as if they were seconds away from throwing his old invisibility cloak on over their heads and going snooping in places they shouldn't.
It was no different with her, though, rather than the nostalgic youthful feeling, Harry was feeling slight tinges of whatever it was that always made him feel so strange and awkward around her. But, again, Harry reminded himself that he was not a fourteen year old kid anymore, and the simple presence of a pretty witch wasn't going to make him forget his current professionalism, even if they did once share something.
It was easier to remember, to feel more his age again when he managed to give her a polite smile, nodding his head in respect as he stepped further into the hallway.
“Cho—“ Harry nodded. “Nice to see you again.”
Flitwick's words finally clicked in Harry's mind and he looked between them, unsure why he felt surprise. He should have known sooner or later that more of the staff he'd grown up with would be stepping back, with younger replacements filling the roles. He just hadn't expected someone he knew quite so soon.
“Harry here has been teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts!” Flitwick squeaked and Harry couldn't help the slight smile from tugging at his lips, only for it to falter when he went on. “—Quite the lot of banging and explosions from his classroom at all hours, I tell you!”
Harry felt his face flush as Flitwick laughed. He didn't dare look at Cho in case she laughed too. He felt the need to defend himself, though found it hard to muster the appropriate authority in their presence, that young and small feeling taking over once more.
“Well, I prefer a hands on approach with the incantations, you see—“ Harry started, before shaking his head slightly, deciding he didn't care what Flitwick poked fun at, as long as his students' marks proved it was working.
Instead, he managed to address Cho again, squashing his self-conscious feelings and attempting to see her as a colleague.
“So, you're really taking over Charms? What made you want to come back? Er—not that this isn't a great career or anything—just a little boring for some, I suppose—“

“Now, remember, the only reading material you should have out during lessons are textbooks and notes, understand?” Harry gave the second-year girl a stern, yet good natured smile as he passed back the magazine he'd taken from her during lessons that morning. She nodded, her face bright red as she shoved it back into her bag and bolted from his office.
Harry sighed, waves of affections for the students washing over him as the spring air from the open window blew in, ruffling his hair. Harry watched as Ariel, his brown owl, swooped back forth in front of the window, enjoying stretching her wings in warm air for once.
There were only a few months left of Harry's first year as a teacher, and though Harry was the current youngest member of staff in his mid-twenties, he felt as if this job had aged him in a good way, put him right where he'd always needed to be, and now he could just be comfortable.
It seemed he wasn't the only one enjoying the day. Harry glanced towards his office door as he heard laughter from out in the hallway. Harry recognized Flitwick's voice, but he couldn't place what would have the old professor so amused out in the middle of the hallway. Harry turned down the dial of the radio on his desk and stepped towards the door, peering out towards Flitwick's office.
Flitwick was speaking with a witch, her back to Harry. They seemed to be engaging like old friends, though Harry noted the witch had to be about his age, though she was dressed smartly. There was something familiar about her silky dark hair, something about it giving him a not-entirely unpleasant swooping feeling in his stomach.
Harry crept further into the hallway, gasping as a draft pull of wind from the still-open window caused his office door to slam shut loudly behind him, echoing throughout the hallway. Harry felt his face flush and he resisted the urge to shrink back, reminding himself he had just as much a right to these halls as her, and he had not been purposely eavesdropping.

As Professor Potter made the list of spells which were supposed to be more difficult, Dominic found none that he didn’t know of. Almost bothered him; probably would have more if he didn’t take such pride in knowing these spells. Ever since he was a young boy, he had been especially interested in anything revolving the dark arts. While the other magical children was all about their brooms and making things move and such, Dominic was more interested in how you could use magic to put others in harms way.
Dominic’s hunger for power, urge to manipulate, harm, drain people’s life had always been present but from the very moment he had started his Hogwarts education, the urge grew stronger. At first, he had even tried to control himself. He tried to resist the urge, tried to be polite to the other children, avoid children of the other houses because he had the strangest need to put them through agony.
Yet; the older he got, the worse it got and the less he cared.
Somehow it seemed that the famous Harry Potter was fuel to the urge; prompting an unbelivable rage in the boy that he could not understand. For every year though, Dominic was feeding off the fuel, and he was growing disturbingly comfortable with the rage Professor Potter unknowingly fed him.
He gave a smile. It was delicate, polite, nice and dead cold as Potter turned his attention to him. “Salvio Hexia is a protective charm, which deflects hexes. It may be helpful if you find yourself in a….delicate situation, unable to escape or in hiding. Your good friend, Hermione Granger was apparently a very good practioner of the spell during your hiding, Proffesor Potter.” he explain smoothly. Despite what it might seem like to others, Dominic did not view Harry Potter as a man worthy of worship despite his obsession.
Harry felt that pit in his stomach grow at the boy's tone. Those who'd been goofing off, chatting or doodling, now looked up with rapt attention. Harry heard giggles or the quiet draw of held breathe, as they waited for Harry's reaction. They weren't afraid of him. Harry had taken careful steps never to lose temper with the students or give them a reason not to trust them. He actually crafted his methods after the one teacher who he considered fit for this role before him, Remus Lupin.
But Lupin wasn't above punishment or firm words when needed, when a certain pale-faced Slytherin's attitude needed to be knocked down a peg. But to Harry, Dominic gave him chills worse than Draco Malfoy ever could. At least Draco mostly relied on the intimidation of his father's status or his lackeys. Dominic was scary alone, a thought that filled Harry with guilt.
He stared back at him, not flinching and only letting out a long sigh.
“The use of my experiences in your example was not necessary, and you'll refrain from it next time.” Harry said calmly. He waves his wand, Dominic's words scrawling out beside the spell. Harry heard the scratches of most of the students jotting that down. “But, yes, it is a protective spell that takes a lot of concentration to perform on large areas. Even somewhere the size of this classroom may be above your ability—“
There was the usual uproar of slight whispers anytime Harry suggested the students may not be able to do something and Harry held back a smile at the way, even in the sixth year's slight teen rebellion, most still longed to impress their teacher.
“—But, perhaps on a smaller scale, the size of your desks is slightly more manageable.” He reluctantly looked back at Dominic and forced his best authority figure smile. “Care to give it a try?”

smiles begets more smiles . luna’s only growing more wide and fond as they fall back into how things were . as much as she had come to aid hagrid as he ventured off on an ADVENTURE— she selfishly wanted that dance down memory lane . but as comforting as hogwarts was ; she had to tread carefully to not get LOST in the past . harry wasn’t the only familiar face roaming down the halls . his was the only one full of color and non translucent . blinking the thoughts away , she followed his gaze and gave the giant dog a scratch behind the ear .
“ they are well , yes? still fussing over the wedding? it is coming up soon . hopefully they figured it all out . papa said — ”
a SCRATCH ! pauses her throat . yes , her father was a sore spot . best not to speak of him . hazel hues flicker away but a smile comes back once more . “ they will be happy to be back home . just as we were , hm? spare them some parchment this first week and they’ll be okay . ” she chuckles at her own joke , twisting the ends of her braids . getting lost in the reel of adventures hagrid had set her on . “ loads . i had to care for a nest of glumbumbles just yesterday . got stung right here , ” raising the sleeve of her shirt , a little GLOOMY looking bump appeared on her shoulder . a souvenir . “ most days though it’s just keeping fang company . making sure he’s fed . ”
with his last questions , she paused . sighed . it sounding more like a hum as luna nodded her head . “ it has been a while . should we go see them together , harry ? ”
Harry lost himself in her smile, the way he didn't know it as well as Ron or Hermione's was a blessing in a way. While he knew their nuances, could read their thoughts sometimes seconds before they spoke, Luna was different. It was a mystery, what went on in her mind, even when she looked right at him, and he liked that. He also longed for the day, just maybe, it'd be so familiar. He just hoped it'd never be so familiar that the sight of it didn't give him that very good heart-flutter.
His smile slipped when hers did, all basking in future plans fading when she mentioned her father. Harry had no ill will towards Xenophilius anymore, knowing what the man went through when Luna was kidnapped. Harry couldn't even lie in the privacy of his own mind and say he wouldn't do the same now, so he understood her avoidance of the subject of someone she had every right to admire and love, despite actions in war time.
But she was all smiles again, forced maybe, but Harry laughed. He hadn't planned on bogging them down too much, but honestly, he found their complaining of homework somewhat endearing, a reminder of a simpler time. He raised his brows at the sight of her shoulder, suddenly realizing maybe the work was tougher than he'd realized.
So, he was glad to offer his company.
“Yeah, I'd like that.” Harry nodded. He didn't find them scary anymore, but he also couldn't remember the last time he'd spotted them outside the tree line. “Wonder if they'll remember me.”

ears perk up and eyes lift towards the sky . a hand raised to block the sun on this unusual bright day . a smile appearing on her lips . she hadn’t heard her friend arrive but she was happy that he had . as she rose to her feet , hands leaving smudges on her overalls as she cleaned them of some of the dirt , fang came to her side . the giant , sagging hound the original receiver of her words . but luna did not mind that harry was here now . it was ALWAYS a good time when he came round . a familiar , calming spirit she greatly admired .
“ i guess i could . ” she ponders in thought.
“ i’m sure professor flitwick can find me a spare room to sleep in… so why not? ” luna shrugs her shoulders , a breathy chuckle falling from her lips . luna loses herself in her head once more . the nargles having a field day with her train thought . why did she not think of this before? of course hagrid would need more help while he unpacked . getting settled back in is much work . yes , she should stay a little while longer . “ good idea , harry . ” and just as quickly , she is back . “ did you have a good day? ”
Harry breathed in relief, smiling softly. He wasn't sure why he wanted it so badly. It wasn't as if she hadn't just talked his ear off about nargles that morning at breakfast, but without the students around, maybe that sort of thing was just welcome when things felt too quiet. Harry might not admit it to anyone else, but he didn't care for when Hogwarts was too quiet. Back when he was at school, it was home when lessons were on and the Great Hall was full of chatter. He wouldn't have it any other way.
“That's great.” Harry eyed Fang now, wondering if he did much to help Luna or if his Hagrid hadn't trained him to do much more than bark at birds. “It was alright.” He shrugged, hands sliding into his open coat pockets. “Sent an owl to Ron and Hermione. Honestly, I'm eager for lessons to start again, not that I think my students would say the same.” He smirked. “What about you, Luna? Hagrid must have you doing loads of interesting stuff.”
He didn't know exactly what it entailed, but he'd watched her from the owlery tower that morning, crossing the grounds with buckets of what looked from a distance like mulch or maybe meat. Harry hadn't meant to stare, but something about the way she had no qualms about dirt under her nails, streaking her face was oddly comforting. It was like he was sure she was truly caring for the place.

Hell Reincarnated
Dominic Rider was watching his professor, eyes glued on his every move. 16 years old, dark haired, dark eyes, his back straight up, not seemingly caring about the people talking in hushed voices around him. This was his most important class. There was no room to bow down to requests of chit chat and gossip. He was studying; not so much the subject, more the object teaching them. Because, all people were merely objects in his eyes.
Their Professor was Harry Potter. The CHOSEN one. Dominic was not going to let mere peasants disturb him. Ever since the young man had started his education at Hogwarts, he had been drawn to the man. He wanted to know his every move. It irked him when Professor Potter paid other students attention. Just because he was so famous. Dominic himself, did not realize just how unhealthy this obsession was. He was too busy doing his important work. He also needed an excuse to not having return to his dear dreaded mother this summer. She was getting a tad...irksome. Botherin him, questioning what he spent his time doing, trying to cage him. Just because...some few accidents around their neighborhood.
@choseni
Harry tried to ignore the activity in his classroom, despite how usual it was, it was hard not to feel it just barely graze under his skin. It wasn't the chatter. Harry didn't mind too much when the students talked, as long as they didn't get too loud and finished their assignments first. No, it was Dominic. Harry absolutely hated to judge students, having had a reputation himself before even entering the wizarding world, but there was something in his cold gaze Harry didn't like. It was as if the young man never took his eyes of Harry, even when there wasn't a lecture. Even when there were more interesting discussions going on around the room, girls and things someone his age should prefer over the more technical and boring parts of Harry's lessons.
“Er, alright—“ Harry spoke up, the talking dying down as he put away his parchment and rose from his desk. “I've reviewed your scores from the last written test, and I can see you're still having some trouble. Remember, everything isn't so organized in the heat of a real duel. You'll wanna lead with what you know in a pinch, rather than trying to rely on the same order of spells over and over again. Every opponent is different.”
Harry pointed his wand at the blackboard, his pre-transcribed notes beginning to scrawl back across the board, a list of more advanced spells that he was trying to get the sixth years to get. They could remember the incantation, but Harry wanted them to know exactly when it should be used.
“Someone—who can tell me about that first charm? Salvio Hexa?”
This was an easy one, or should be, but as Harry turned back around, he noted that most of the class, while having their eyes forward at least, were either staring at him blankly, or shifting uncomfortably, as if waiting for someone else to speak up. Only one person sat at rigid attention. Harry couldn't help the crease in his eyes behind his brows, but he tried to smile at the boy who made his skin crawl.
“Dominic? Care to take a crack at it?”
do you ever feel like you love a character more than their own writers do
Be careful, you are not in Wonderland. I’ve heard the strange madness long growing in your soul, in your isolation but you are fortunate in your ignorance. You who have suffered find where love hides, give, share, lose, lest we die unbloomed.

Harry hadn't been sure if Luna had heard him arrive or not, and he still wasn't sure if she was speaking to him or to herself, still, he knew his input would be welcome. He smiled fondly, having somehow managed to feel even stronger his affection and friendship for her in the past few weeks she'd taken Hagrid's place.
Of course, he was always going to welcome Hagrid back, but he'd be lying if he said he wasn't going to do so with the smallest bit of reluctance.
Harry took a few steps closer, the faint springtime breeze blowing around the loose scarf he wore, but no longer needed.
“You could stay just a little longer, couldn't you?” Harry asked, unsure why it made him nervous to ask. “You've probably got so much to fill Hagrid in on—the creatures, the plants, it just seems better to ease him back in hands on rather than leaving him a note. He's getting on up there, you know—“
Harry cringed slightly at himself in embarrassment for saying that last bit, but knowing her, she wouldn't think much of it. He watched her now, the soil sunk in between her fingers in a way that only she could make look inviting.
