Let’s talk about it...

If I’m honest after the loss of a loved one I don’t always want to get out and celebrate with others. Sometimes I want to stay under the covers. Sometimes I don’t want that full course holiday meal. Sometimes I am happy with a sandwich or bowl of oatmeal. Guess what - that is totally fine.

Too often people want you to get out and socialize and fellowship but the grief and heartache is too much sometimes. You just don’t want to be bothered. You don’t want to be a bother to others either. Just me? That’s fine.

Let’s talk about being a bother. You’ve got your stuff going on and because your emotions feel like a see saw your are unsure how chipper you’ll be. You’re unsure what moment will cause a flood of tears. You’re unsure how you will respond - because if I’m honest it sucks.

I’ve been without my Mom, AdaE for 16 years and some years have been better than others but it stinks.

My words of wisdom to those grieving a loss during the holiday. Trust your intuition. If you need a moment take it and communicate to those around you that you need some space. Now I don’t encourage the moment last too long because you can get swallowed up in a pit you can’t get yourself out of. This year I chose to volunteer so that I could get out of the house intentionally. Yes, it is hard sometimes but you also have to push yourself sometimes.

To those that are trying to be of support to those that are grieving - Thank you! We are a mess and we appreciate your love. I appreciate your consistency. My brother from another mother has asked me for the past 10 years to come over for Thanksgiving dinner and I declined every year lol. Last year I finally gave in. I was ready. It takes time. Allow us time. Everyone grieves differently and it’s not as easy to get over sometimes - but we are trying.

All in all - whatever side you find yourself on be encouraged. It gets better. You will pull through. They will take heed to your offer to join your family for the holidays.

March Forth

Webster defines march as: to move along steadily usually with a rhythmic stride and in step with others; to move in a direct purposeful manner: proceed; to make steady progress: advance time marches on; to stand in orderly array suggestive of marching.

Have you ever observed someone marching? The precision of soldiers as they get into formation. They are joined for a main cause, but stand individually for different reasons. They are in uniform and prepared with the items needed to complete the task at hand. We cannot march forth and not be prepared for challenges that may come along the way. Soldiers may carry: communication gear, water, a first aid kit, clothing, personal items, power bars, energy drinks and more. When marching forth you must obtain the tools needed to do so. What’s in your backpack?

When reflecting on soldiers, you realize that they have all joined for different reasons. One may have joined as their forefathers were members, to start a new tradition, to pay for college or to explore the world. Although the motives are different, they continue to move forward towards their mission.

Dory of Finding Nemo, said ‘Just keep swimming’. Life can be overwhelming at times but don’t give up. There is an image I love and use as motivation. A person gave up, because they felt that they couldn’t go anymore. However, the image shows us he would have reached his goal had he struck the wall a couple more times.

Time waits for no man. The direction you are moving in may change, but the goal is to NOT give up.

Today I encourage you to March Forth directly and purposefully. Fulfill your dream! Don’t give up!
