A ‘ turn of events ’ didn’t really seem like it fit the situation all too well. The last thing Christian had expected was to end up on his couch with two people fast asleep against him. Harry he’d expected it from ( the boy had a tendency towards falling asleep in his lap rather than in a bed ) but he hadn’t foreseen Reader following suit. It was sweet, really; though he came to realise rather quickly that he had no idea what to do with his hands, so they remained still in his lap while the others slept.

He had invited the man to stay the night entirely of his own accord - why, he wasn’t quite sure. It was late. A lame excuse, but an excuse nonetheless. Slowly, the detective removed himself from his sandwiched position, scooping Harry up. Having situated his son comfortably upon his hip, Chris reached for the blanket on the back of the sofa to drape over the ( thankfully ) still sleeping man’s figure.

“I struggle to understand why a person I’ve never met would think it’s perfectly acceptable to lean closer to me and sniff my hair in a goddamn checkout line,” Carol huffed, not even bothering with trying to hide the icy prickliness in her voice; she had very little patience for the kind of behaviour she was describing. “Someone please explain me why anyone would think to do that. Especially in a supermarket.“ Anyone who was familiar with Carol would have known just how much she disliked people who entered her personal space uninvited, so the irritated look on her face would not have come as a surprise to them.

Her speech was met with a blank look. Not because Christian had been consciously ignoring her, ( he could be blunt in that sense, but she had done nothing to earn such a response ) but because the detective simply hadn’t realised the woman had been addressing him. “Uh,” the syllable held for a few beats, brows furrowing as he attempted to piece together her earlier words before instead turning his focus to the present utterance. “If there was an explanation for it,” whatever the ‘ it ’ was, “there’d probably be some sort of solution by now.”

Definitely not how he wanted to spend the night. He’d heard the night life in the city was something else, but he really wasn’t expecting a fist to his face that soon. It wasn’t the usual bonfires and showmanship of Inhuman abilities like when he was a kid. No, New York night life was a lot more aggressive. That might have been due to the fact that he went nightlife hunting during what he assumed qualified as a bad time, but he didn’t really want to think about specifics. It took a special sort of asshole to think a wandering man and his dog were an easy target. Reader was anything but an easy target. The instant he felt a hand try to slip into the pouch on his hip, he reacted with a warning swing of his staff. Whoever the hell it was had a quick recovery time and a fist clipped the Inhuman’s jaw. He sighed and held his staff in front of his chest before inclining his head as he heard someone else approaching from up ahead. 

“All good,” he said with a dismissive hand motion. “There’s no problem here, just a bit of a misunderstanding.”

Reader wasn’t big into fighting strangers without a really good reason and normally, he’d let a thief off with an easy warning and a smile. The punch to his face just wasn’t cool. He struck again, banking on the thief still being in front of him, and cashed in. Turned out he was right and his staff made a resounding ‘thump’ on the thief’s skull like a parent reprimanding a bad kid. His mother had done it once and it had been pretty effective as far as he was concerned. With her hand, of course. Not a heavy wooden staff made for combat situations. The thief hadn’t been expecting retaliation from a blind man or an audience apparently and they took off past him. No wandering hands that time. He rubbed at his jaw and tapped his finger against the small cut.

“Huh, guess they were wearing a ring. Rude,” he muttered to himself before reaching down to pet Forey’s head. He had a feeling he wasn’t alone still, from the way his dog tensed beside him. “Still there? Fair enough. Don’t happen to know a place I can get a meal, do you? Or a drink, at least? Somewhere dog friendly would be stellar.”

You’re off duty. You can switch off now, Chris. Words he often relayed to himself, subconsciosly given that Marilyn was usually the one to voice this out loud. 

He’d never quite figured out how to do that, flick a switch and relax, forgot about the monstrous people running around the city committing crimes. Not only could he not switch it off, but no matter where he went crime seemed to follow Christian. On the way home last Friday he’d arrested a man for assault, the week before that he’d caught a thief on the sub home. It made him think that, perhaps there was no switching it off within himself because the criminals didn’t switch off. They operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Naturally, it didn’t come as any form of surprise when he came across the scene unfolding. 

He stayed; unable to tear his gaze away from the staff swinging through the air ( and wincing as the sound of it connecting with the attacker echoed around them. ) Christian's hand moved automatically to the gun attached to his hip, blue eyes flickering between the two. 

Christian considered running after him, a heavy sigh falling from his lips before he removed his hand from the weapon, and instead fixed his suit jacket and coat around himself. Immediately his attention diverted to the other man, honing in on the scrape across his jaw. "You okay?" After another moment of deliberation he moved to stand closer. "Still here." Came his confirmation, accompanied by a stiff nod. "I know a few places. Want me to take you?"
