simplify and narrow for beginning game:
barbarian - gain and spend rage in rage system for benefits to damage and special attacks. reckless, high hp, can fight even when below 0 hp. Has berserk for daily ability.
rogue - lots of base skills start trained, can use skills for "gambits" to gain advantage in combat, position, etc. Sneak attacks replaced by critical hits, which rogues are masters of. IDEA: Extra action points like fighter? Use them to improve chances on skill use, use gambits properly, move more effectively on the battlefield, and feel "fast".
warrior (use open ended warlord template to allow defensive or offensive character) - uses extra action points for damage, defense, advantage, and aiding allies. Has daily "second wind" to gain temporary hp.
bard - (use spellsinger template) - like d&d sorcerer where power is internal from heritage. uses magic for spell powers such as dancing sword, confusion, etc. controller with some damage capability. has powerful songs that can only use daily such as "celerity (haste), restoration, and valor (give party buffs) make fun and powerful is a design goal!
paladin - (keep design generic) - roll cleric and paladin together. Gain blessings for performing good deeds (identify virtues, and a knight that represents that virtue gives the "blessing of saint blah blah). Gain wrath and use for defensive (blind enemies with light, gain advantage on defense for paladin or friends) and offensive abilities (holy sword - spend wrath to gain temporary holy damage on weapon attacks). Wrath is similiar to the rage system. Less damage then barbarian and warrior. Has daily use of miracles: turn undead, lay on hands, cleanse, remove fear.
ranger - animal companion, excellent with archery, focus system similiar to mana, can be spent to use offensive (rapid shot, etc) and defensive abilities (defensive bow stance). gain focus back by using "aim" - take action point to gain focus back on a regular attack. Action point to command animal companion, forcing ranger to decide between using special attacks, gaining focus, or using animal companion to attack. Ranger is the other class with a lot of skills trained automatically at level 1, like rogue.
wizard - uses force magic, manipulates time, good offensive magic, illusions. uses mana, which starts high and goes down through battle.
druid - uses primordial nature magic to summon animals to battle and attack with elemental energy. Has daily use of healing magic and buffs. Uses mana, which starts high and goes down through battle. Use elemental mage as template for damage ability.
