“I think we both will,” she frowned in agreement as she cleaned and disinfected the incision. “ There now, that wasn’t so bad now was it?,” she added for irony’s sake as she finished up with a bandage,“ alright then, pick your poison,” the nurse offered as she put the chip away for future reference- perhaps there was something Issac could learn from it.

Chris remained eerily silent, waiting until the bandage was in place to feel it. “At least it’s not as sore as I thought it would be,” he noted as he looked over at Vanessa. “What do you got?”

“That would be helpful.” Max did his best to look grateful and relax. With Chris helping him he might be able to get a little bit of the info that he’d been trying to obtain on his own.

“I’ll make sure to leave it at Jana’s place for you. You are staying with her, right?” The last he heard that’s where he was residing for the time being. He didn’t want to bring him to the storage building. God knows what he would do if he knew where that was.

Max stopped and smirked before turning back around to face Chris. “Just the basics. I lost everything.” Maybe that would help soften his attitude since they all knew what it was like to lose it all.

In a small part of his brain, he felt a little sorry for the guy, but that didn’t mean his thoughts about him didn’t change. “I’ll see what I can do. It might not be much but at least it should get you through until the next market day.”

“Sorry sweetie,” Vanessa mumbled sheepishly as she continued her work. She wanted to get this over with as quickly and painlessly as possible for Chris’ sake but she was also trying to avoid causing any muscle or nerve damage. She spotted the hateful little thing, she studied it as she put down her scalpel and grabbed a small pair of forceps. It wasn’t imbedded in any major muscle. Her friend had lucked out. This time. “Got the bastard,” she announced proudly as as she swiftly extracted it. “ The hard parts over, now I just need to flush it out and clean it and we’re all done.” She soothed.

Chris did his absolute best to remain still - he knew that any minor move could cause major problems but damn did he want to flinch away from what she was doing. At least the little thing was out. “I’m gonna need a drink after this.”

“Sounds good, should make my life a lot easier.” Max gave him a half hearted smile and started to head away from the building.

He started to watch Max leave and part of him wanted to let him go but there was part of him that figured that maybe he should take some pity on him, despite the fact he was a Government agent and he was not a big fan of his. “What is it that you need, exactly?” he asked.

“All right no hello kitty,” Vanessa agreed even if it was with a slight tinge of disappointment,“ so fussy,” she smiled as she slid on her gloves and carefully began to retrieve the chip. “ Think there could be some Resistance babies soon?” She asked, she thought it was a strong possibility with all the new people in the area, but who knew really? It was best to keep him talking so he wasn’t focusing on what she was doing.

As much as Chris tried to relax so that Vanessa’s trip to retrieve the chip went smoothly, he still couldn’t help but feel somewhat tense as he knew at any moment he was going to feel her cut into his skin. “I don’t know, I’m more worried about other things,” he managed to get out before he grunted and clenched his fists the moment he felt her scalpel cut his neck.

Max took the paper and looked down at the symbol on it. “So that’s what this means?” He’d seen it around the city over the last year but never really put the two together.

“Yeah. Like I said, you can ask Jana about this stuff. She’ll know where the market goes before most people so you’ll be in luck.”

“Course I do, you’re working with a professional here,” she chuckled before setting her things on the table in front of them, “my personal favorite is snoopy the flying ace, though snoopy the thoughtful writer comes in a close a close second,” she mused before order her friend to turn around.

Chris couldn’t help but chuckle as he turned around, a little bit more relaxed but still slightly on edge. “I’ll let you choose....just no Hello Kitty.”

“And where would that be?” Max would much rather have learned the lay of the land on his own even if he’d told the others he wouldn’t, but Chris was obviously going to be a thorn in his side.

“Depends on where the market opens up for the day. We can’t keep it in the same place for obvious reasons.” It was probably against his better judgement but giving him something would probably keep him from poking his nose in places it didn’t belong. Pulling out a piece of paper and a pen he drew the symbol of the black market for him. “Look for this and you’ll find it, or you can ask Jana, since you’re living with her. She’ll point you in the right direction.”

“For the last time, I’m not snooping!” Max was irritated that this man that he’s always seen as beneath him now seemed to hold all the power over him. “i was just trying to be self sufficient. I’m not looking to sit around and be given handouts.”

“Well....I don’t know how things were ran over in your Agent land, but we do things differently. If we let people help themselves, we’d run out of supplies faster than you can grab them. We have a system so if you need something, you do what everyone else does - get in line.”

“Well I didn’t exactly know it would be locked when I tried to pull it open.” Max held his empty hands up. “Can’t really open a locked door without a key. Not a super human like you.”

Chris eyed Max warily, still very untrusting of the man. Old habits. “If you need supplies you ask someone, preferably someone in charge of the market. You don’t go snooping around.”

“Oh, it’s not going to be that bad,” Vanessa chided lightly, she couldn’t help but noticing the look on his face and how tense his shoulders where- that really wasn’t going to help anything,” I’ll even give you you’re choice of lollipop and snoopy band-aid,” she offered playfully.

Chris looked over his shoulder, gazing at her somewhat amused. “You actually have some of those?”

“ Ok, got everything we should need right here,” she shot him a reassuring smile as she returned,“ that thing will be gone in no time.”

“I hope so,” he muttered under his breath as he tried not to look at the supplies she had grabbed and focused on the bland spot on the wall.

“What?” Max turned around when he heard Chris and sighed. At least it was him and not a hybrid or Second Gen that could do a whole lot of damage. “I was trying to figure out where the hell I’m supposed to go to get some clothes.”

Chris glanced between him and the building that was he currently trying to get into. “So you thought you would try to go into a locked building?”

“Relax? You just told me you were taken. You swear you’re alright?” She said looking back at over at Chris. He seemed unhurt which was more than she could say. “We’ve got to keep better track of each other next time.”

“Cross my heart,” he said, crossing his heart as he said so. “Yeah, we probably do. Kind of hard to with everyone running around like it was the racing of the bulls, though.”

“Damn skippy I am,” She muttered as she sat Chris down and inspected his neck under the light. She tilted her head as she contemplated her next move, lucky for him this shouldn’t be too hard to take care of, “Be right back,” she promised as she headed to the storeroom to grab some supplies.

Chris sat as still as possible as she inspected the spot. He would feel much better when it was out and crushed under his foot. No need to take any chances. He sat in silence, fingers tapping gently as he waited for her return.
