Graded Unit - Evaluation
HND1 Graded Unit
Evaluation
Christopher Kerr
For our HND 1 Photography Graded Unit, we were asked to create our own brief with a certain theme. For our approach essay and plan we were asked to write about 3 different photographers that inspired this Graded Unit. The 3 Photographers that I chose were, NorthBorders/Mike, From Australia, 19Tones/Ernest Em, From Russia, and Pierre T. Lambert, From France. All 3 use a Sony camera like me and they all shoot out on the street like me which inspired me to do this project. In my plan I had documented the days I would shoot and edit. What I would need for my project and if there were any health and safety risks that would occur while out shooting. Since I was on the streets of Glasgow for shooting there was a lot of risks like crowds and cars for example so I had to take extra caution while shooting.
I had planned to go out one day to shoot and then edit the next day. However due to the lovely Scottish weather, this wasn’t possible. So instead I went out shooting every day where it was NOT raining to get the shots I wanted. I had also planned to try and shoot at night to get some long exposure cityscapes. Although I did shoot some night shots, they didn’t turn out the way I wanted so I didn’t end up using them however it was a good experience to shoot at night.
In my plan I had written that I was going to make a project based on street photography, however my idea of street photography was different from what it actually is. My idea of street photography was more of an urban environment / city scape idea so I ended up merging them both.
This was my most enjoyable brief of the course because going out in the street and capturing moments and different locations as they come by is what I enjoy the most about photography. I enjoyed seeing parts of Glasgow I had not seen before because although I had planned out certain locations I would photograph, I ended up seeing other places on the way which was a good experience discovering new locations.
I learned how to use different perspectives to create an interesting group images, making use of natural reflections in puddles from a low angle for example to make any buildings look massive. I learned how to use different focal lengths depending on the image I want to create. Most of my images were shot in 28mm focal length to fit as much in the frame as possible.
For editing, I used Adobe Lightroom Classic. This is my favourite way to edit as there is a lot of flexibility to change things to my liking although there wasn’t much changed. I shot all of my images in RAW / .ARW format so I had as much data in my images as possible to recover any shadows or highlights. If an image was underexposed for example, I was able to bring it back in lightroom due to my images being shot in RAW / .AWR.
Once my images were edited I exported them onto my external SSD so I could access my images at home or in college if needed.
In conclusion this was my favourite and most beneficial project / brief of the whole year. It allowed me to do my own thing and photograph something I liked while having fun with it. It was good being out on the street shooting rather than in the studio as I prefer being out and about. If I were asked to do this again I would try and go to a lot more places to get a variety of shots in different locations. I would also try and experiment more with night time shooting as I think that could make some interesting images.

Storyboard For Video
Moving Images - Research
Moving image techniques
Panning - When you move your camera horizontally either left or right while its base is at a singular point, good for showing of a location
Tilt - Similar to panning however instead of horizontally its vertical
Zoom - Get closer to whatever you’re filming, a very useful and well known camera technique
Tracking - Tracking is following a moving object, for example a video of a car
Dolly - Moving the camera in and out on a moving track
Pull Focus - When the camera changes focus from one thing to something else in the scene. Could be used to establish something a character is looking at in the background for example
Long shot - Shot from far away
Medium Shot - Shows near enough a persons full body, used to show multiple characters or show body language
Close Up - Very close to the subject, could be used for conversation
Point of View - Filmed as if it was viewed from someones eyes, used for first person perspective
Birds Eye - Taken from very high, normally shot using a drone or helicopter
A tri-pod, slider or gimbal can be used to steady footage

Pulling Focus
A camera assistants job is to judge the distance between the camera and the subject and manipulating the lens of the camera to keep the subject in focus.
Being able to anticipate peoples natural movements can be helpful in focus pulling as you can predict their movements to track the focus on the person/subject.
Writing different focus points on your lens can help quickly pull focus depending on the distance of the subject.
Moving Image - Research
Action - Where to position subject in the frame
Rule of thirds - Position the subject in a horizontal third of the frame, most cameras will have an option to add a grid. Putting the subject in a third instead of the centre will allow the viewer to see what the subject is looking into
Light and Dark - Use lighting to draw the viewers attention, for example one light on in a dark room so the viewer looks there, different colours can be used to create a different mood and tone. In this example red is used to create a feeling of panic and rage.
Angles and Perspective - Using different angles and perspective can make things look larger or smaller depending on how it is shot. In this example is it clear to the viewer that the group of characters are further away than the character in the foreground
Moving Image - Video Research
1. Mr Bean Snickers Advert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIVDxL2lgN4
This video was displayed on TV to advertise the chocolate bar snickers, the video is humorous and is successful in communicating its message because of the catchphrase, “you’re not you when you’re hungry”
Camera techniques i noticed being used in this video are a birds eye view, panning, close ups, tracking and a medium shot.

Lost & Found - Inspiration
My main inspiration for this project was actually from the brief. I done some further research on this image and found out it was taken by James Popsys who is a Photographer and Youtuber. I take inspiration from some of his videos.

This is the video where he creates the image using photoshop and lightroom
Lost & Found - Object
For my object I have chosen different styles of hats. I am going to combine the location and object by having a hat on top of the clock tower. Whichever one looks the best will be my final
